Z's on BAT and other places collection
I was on my way to the airport today for work on a road I’ve driven 100x that’s 18 miles from my house and out of the corner of my eye I spotted what appeared to be a Z. I hit the brakes, turned around and behind a shed with a bunch of other cars next to a trailer home was this 240z. I couldn’t get close because he has a no trespassing sign and probably a shotgun or two and I had a flight to catch but once I get back I’m going to see if it’s worth buying and if the guy will sell. I’ve never see a 240z in my area ever. I can’t tell from the pic what year it is ,either way it will be an adventure to look at it without getting shot.5 points

Found old Z pictures. I’ll start!
5 pointsAt least it is still a car dealer. I tried to find on Google Maps my original dealership location and cannot even find it (probably due to highway routing or name change or something similar.) My dealer was Gubrud's Valley Datsun in Mt. Vernon, Washington, According to my logbook, I went through Chilliwak in 1974 in my 240Z and stopped for gas in adjacent Sardis. If I'd know about the models at the Chilliwak Datsun dealer, I certainly would have stopped by! (I'd just been discharged from the US Navy at the Oak Harbor WA Naval Air Station and was driving back to the Midwest via the Trans Canadian Highway. great trip!) COVID-19
2 pointsThe problem with the real news is the "Official Story" the Gov. doles out to our trusted news sources. Most of it is probably true, as far as it goes, but it's what they're not sharing with us that is the real news. The "Powers That Be" (pick your favorites) do control the news, real and fake and as history has shown, the real and fake news often came from the same sources. A lie by omission, is still a lie. Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Lord Acton2 points

Fan clutch
2 pointsThe cleaners came just as I was planning on sitting at the laptop, so i HAD to leave the house and socially distance myself in the garage Fixed fuel sender so that the float is now pointing left instead of right! Filled up with an eye watering £80 of Esso 99 then went for a drive. Incidentally that’s their new fuel without ethanol! Next time you Yankee boys are complaining at the pumps, spare a thought for the rest of us paying $2 / litre and financing gold Lamborghinis in the Middle East oh and our thriving government with close to 80% tax on fuel! With the fuel sender showing F now, I gave the car a bloody good thrash and then sat in a lay-by idling for 10 mins. Normal driving, temps are now at 1/4 across. Idling in the lay-by, it doggedly stuck to half or very slightly below (which is 85c I believe). Then I turned the engine off for a couple of mins and let it heat soak. When started up again, the gauge was just past half way. In under a minute, it came back down to a half! Ambient temp today is 17c here. Would be interesting to see if it does the same at 25c - 30c. The good news is, when I got home, it was back down to 1/4 and I could stop the fan with my fingers without having them chopped off!! I tried cardboard and ended up with a bit of a mess. ;) So the Aisin clutch is definitely working per spec!!! Yay!!! It’s the first time in my Z ownership that I have a fan clutch working as it should! It does however idle with a little more vigour than my other one, so there is noticeably more airflow through the rad. The electric fans will now take a back seat until I sort out the next set of issues like lights working reliably on both sides of the car or dealing with rough idle / part throttle issues etc.2 points

(Budget) what do I do
2 points330-400hp is an expensive proposition in these cars. It takes a good bit of money to build that kind of motor. Then you have drivetrain and brake upgrades. Ends up requiring a pretty big budget2 points

L28 Main Caos
2 pointsIf I were in the middle of the outback and needed to get to the hospital, I might try swapping the cap from one motor to another just to save a life. But I would never expect it to last. And I certainly would never try that on cap #4 or the rear cap #7. So unless the guy you bought the motor from turns up the missing cap, it sounds like you bought a paperweight.2 points

Carb issue
2 pointsA friend had a clutch collar off a 280z so I just sent it and it worked perfectly. Finally after a year I've finally been able to drive the car! She runs hot however 😕 water pump is probably bad because water is leaking, might need some new radiator, and some other stuff here and there. Carbs need a little tuning because they don't do well under heavy load like when I do a pull. Thanks for all the help guys.2 points

2 pointsDefinitely the way to go with the trim installed before setting the glass in the body. That little trim tool is a great investment for under 10 bucks. Eliminates the chance of nicking or tearing the rubber seal. Glad you had no issues. Will be a big hit in Colo at Zcon if you and Cody bring it ....2 points

Question on front bumper rubber/moulding
Yes. If you don't take Mart ( @dutchzcarguy ) up on his offer I probably will. 🍀 NOS examples of the rubber filler are very difficult to find. Relatively good condition used filler pieces can be restored, but even those are not plentiful.2 points

[2021] What Did You Do To/with Your Z Today?
Well, it's my annual week off to prepare for the Mitty historic races at Road Atlanta. I changed the oil on the 260Z today and got the 6 month old tires mounted to replace the ones I got for free back in 2018. (I have to see if I can fix that toe-in in the rear sometime.) Tomorrow is bath-time for the Z, and I'll clean it out inside, too. I carry around too many tools/parts so I can help other people with their Zs.1 point

Well I grew up in Kansas, so I was kind of used to "straight and endless" 😄 The Mountie that caught me was a very helpful fellow and I was surprised that I was allowed to continue on and could mail in my fine after I returned to California to resume my pre-Navy job. Which I did! Canadians are so nice! Thanks for the photos of the A6 Intruders at the base entrance! That is the aircraft my squadron flew.1 point

My car has similar damage. I had it checked for being square and level on a frame rack. I dollied some of the wrinkled metal but its impossible to fix it all without removing the radiator support. In the end I dont care that much. I won't be able to see it from the drivers seat and it wont affect anything else1 point

(Budget) what do I do
1 pointLS swaps are not that cheap, you might be able to do it cheaper if you grab a car that came with an LS to swap all the stuff over. Then parting out that car. But still your going to be in the hole for all the other stuff that you’ll need. fixing that l28 might be the cheapest of the options. Although that much for a head gasket is asking a lot, shops have to make money though. If your inclined the DIY route will certainly save you a bunch of money, I think @siteunseen is at the ballpark, without getting into machining costs, $500 will get you pretty far with a l28. the nice thing about that route is when it comes time for fix that l28et you’ll be more knowledgeable of what needs to be done on it.1 point

COVID-19
1 pointPretty much everything these days depends on where you get your news. Here's my guide: If you think your reliable news comes from something down in the lower left like "Occupy Democrats", then I think you're off in the weeds of unreliable and untrustworthy. And same thing, if your news comes from something untrustworthy way down in the lower right like "Epoch Times", then maybe it's time to re-evaluate your news sources, Problem is, once you're mired into either of those two ends, part of the conspiracy and paranoia is designed to to keep you there. And that's probably what everyone mired down into either of the two ends would say about that media bias chart. They probably think the chart itself is unreliable. Kinda like the mental patient who is paranoid and thinks the doctors are trying to get him so he hides his meds instead of taking them. Maybe I'm just sheeple, but I want to stick towards the top tier of reliability. You can tend towards one side or the other within that top tier to find your own personal political leaning, but once you start to wander too far out of that top tier, the information, even if "technically accurate", is interpreted and presented in an incredibly misleading way. There's a reason entities like the WSJ, Reuters, CBS, New York Times have been around for so long and have a reputation for being reliable. Down at the bottom of the chart, you;d be better off getting your news from The National Enquirer. It's fake news, but at least it appears to be pretty close to the middle of the political spectrum.1 point

Found old Z pictures. I’ll start!
It looks like the owner, John Gubrud, sold the dealership to another local businessman, Don Gordon, 1985. By then, it would have become a Nissan franchise. Somewhere along the way, the business also picked up a Suzuki franchise. There doesn't seem to be a Nissan franchise in Mt Vernon any more, but there is a Nissan-Suzuki dealer called KARmart not far away, in Burlington, so the guy who bought Gordon's business probably decided to re-locate it there. The only likely property that I can see in the vicinity of 1575 Memorial Highway in Mt Vernon is a boat sales & service operation on the river just to the north of the new highway. It seems that Mr. Gubrud was a boater, so it wouldn't be surprising if he sold his old car dealership property to a fellow boater-business person who re-purposed it into a boat sales/service business. The Datsun showroom and service buildings are probably long gone. I visited Mt Vernon a couple of times back in the 1980's, when my company was doing business with the PACCAR test centre. Nice countryside. One of the members of the founding family of PACCAR, Pat Piggot, was prominent in the west coast sportscar racing scene back in the late 1950's and early 1960's. He was killed in a race at Riverside in 1962. I see you got popped for speeding in Moose Jaw during your cross-Canada journey back in the 1970's. The Trans-Canada Highway can get pretty straight and endless after four or five hours, can't it? 'Time to let the car stretch its legs a bit'.1 point

1976 280Z Restoration Project
1 pointIndeed, I am replacing my floors now. I have been rereading the entire section and have been taking notes to copy some of your ideas - like scoring the metal to facilitate bending of your frame connectors and adding a jack plate for starters. Thank you again for taking the time to provide so much helpful information - especially what the original sheet metal looked like!1 point

Z's on BAT and other places collection
I really hope that this car is purchased with the intent to do a full restoration and not be parted-out. HLS30-03196 is a low numbered car and has its original matching numbers engine: L24-06190. The car still retains its original 918 Orange paint in spare tire well and other places and is one of the most desirable 240Z paint colors! https://www.ebay.com/itm/1970-Datsun-Z-Series/224430749107?hash=item34411d75b3:g:JLkAAOSwd9pgfNLy1 point

Tuning With An Air/Fuel Gauge
1 pointAnd here is the end of the post-credits scene for this feature-length thread: after 3 separate mismatched injector shipments from rockauto, I finally got 6 matching ones and sent the rest back. Took the car out today for the first time and interestingly enough, with the new reman injectors, I needed to richen the car a bit to get it to our numbers. I expected the old injectors to have had a diminished fuel output due to age but who knows.1 point

COVID-19
1 pointFirst of all... don't believe everything you see on the news. The media is a one way street and I trust them less and less these days. Second of all, the stupidity around the vaccine is just insane (not anyone here, I'm pointing more at the media). The reason they have to give booster shots is because they have NOT isolated the genome necessary for a real vaccine and will continue to provide booster shots for all the variants. Both the CDC and FDA websites have a ton of data on this subject, but you have to dig for it. In fact, did you know that all COVID vaccines currently being used are not on the FDA's approved list? They are experimental vaccines under a preliminary "emergency use authorization"... I'm not a medical professional, nor am I giving advice. I'm simply supplying a different point of view from the media and all the hype going on. https://www.fda.gov/vaccines-blood-biologics/vaccines/emergency-use-authorization-vaccines-explained Here's a list of approved vaccines: https://www.fda.gov/vaccines-blood-biologics/vaccines/vaccines-licensed-use-united-states What I am really worried about is using an experimental drug and having side effects. I'm not so sure my insurance company covers health conditions caused by experimental/unapproved vaccines. I'd rather take my chances than trust the political rush around this virus. Do your own research and take the necessary steps to be ABSOLUTELY sure you want to be doing this. You don't want to get stuck into a situation where a vaccine is pulled from the shelves (https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/joint-cdc-and-fda-statement-johnson-johnson-covid-19-vaccine). Good luck and stay safe, my friends. Mike1 point

1 pointFrom recent news coverage it sounds like annual booster shots may be a good idea. If that's the case, I'm very much in. That makes sense to me. I get a yearly flu shot anyway, and two sticks are no more trouble than one. That said, I salute Racer X for going through what he has. No fun at all.1 point

Cody's Goon
1 pointSo I should've taken pictures first!! Sometimes I get "tunnel vision"... The lower windshield trim on Cody's car was bashed in about 8" or 9" wide right in the middle of the windshield. It was so caved it it was concave instead of convex. So I had reached out to the forum to source this trim. @Terrapin Zhad responded with a good source for it, but we may have a lead on a parts car and I hate the idea of buying a new set of trim and then ending up with a parts car on top of that! So I figured I didn't have anything to lose by trying to straighten what I had... So off to YouTube All the videos on YouTube are pretty much dealing with vintage American cars. The trim on these cars is so much thicker and heavier than our Datsun trim. I wasn't really very hopeful.. So out came the tools So an assortment of punches, a body hammer and a flat file. A finer file would have been a plus. So I started dollying the dents out of the back of the trim. The main tool I used was the brass punch that I shaved the edges off of. I used it from the back of the trim on a piece of leather and chucked up into the vise as an anvil. I made pretty good progress but could get the convex shape back in the trim. So I shaped a little diviot in a 1x4 and used that as a buck and dollied the trim against the divot with the brass punch. Lot's of little light strikes, hundreds... So at this point the shape is pretty close but not smooth. So here comes the file. Now our trim is super thin! So you are very limited on how much filing you can do. If you cut through it, the trim is pretty much ruined. I filed till it was pretty smooth and then I used a sharpie to mark the backside of the spots that needed more work. Then a little more filing. Then I started sanding the front to try to get rid of the filing marks. A finer file would have made this easier. I used the end of the 1x4 to rest the trim on while sanding. I had to have a helper hold the trim while I sanded and you have to use a good bit of pressure because the trim is really hard. So then I buffed it a low speed with a first and second cut You have to be really careful buffing this stuff, because the buffer will take it away from you in a heartbeat. So I was really pleased with the results. There are still some file scratches in the piece that I could probably remove with more sanding work but they are only visible if you get really close. So I buffed it at low speed with a first and second buff. It's hard to see the flaws in the trim with the cell phone camera but it is very presentable Here is the damaged area from the back, and yes it is that rough and a pristine rear section Overall really pleased!! Once it's in the weatherstrip, only about half of it shows so it should serve the purpose for now and we can keep moving forward1 point

Help with Front Bumper mount Area
When I look at it, the curve is too abrupt on Ryan's car. So if you make the area nicely curved it should distribute the metal out allowing the vertical sides. The way it's supposed to be, That's at least how it looks. I think some dolly work would move it but you could easily stretch the metal. Shrinking might help but you will have to keep your shrink areas very close to each other to prevent other problems. I think the best idea is to find some schedule 40 pipe that is close to the right diameter. Use it as you dolly to reshape the area1 point
