Hi all, I am building a mild stroker L28 and I wanted to run a couple questions by you all. I have a 90.5mm bore diameter headgasket already picked out, and will have my block bored out to either 89 or 90mm depending on if I ultimately go with a 2949cc or 3015cc displacement. I wanted to ask if anyone has any specific advice about the relationship of the headgasket bore diameter to the block bore diameter. Should I skew towards the 89mm diameter for my block walls to retain a little extra meat, and maybe be just that little bit sturdier? Or does someone think that a 1.5mm difference between the headgasket bore and block bore would be an issue I should be wary of? Thanks, …

I was explaining helicals yesterday on another site and came up with what I think is my most concise and clear explanation to date, so I cleaned it up a bit and figured I'd repost it elsewhere. Helical diffs work like this: two large side gears in the carrier are connected to the axles, and a bunch of worm gears drive off of each side gear and ride on each other in the center. The worm gears connect the two side gears together, so that when one side gear turns at a different speed than the other, all of the worm gears must also turn. When there is no load (no torque) and the unit is not preloaded (some are preloaded from the factory, some aren't), you can jack up the rea…

I've got what sounds like a click in sync with the cam. It developed a few weeks ago on a cruise. I figured that I just had an issue I could tune out with a quick valve adjustment, so I did the "fit no-fit" method for lash adjustment (hot, .010" intake, .012" exhaust). I reassembled everything, kicked it over, and... The click is still there. What am I doing wrong? Edit: forgot to mention that it's a stock L24 with an E31 head.

It's coming from the back right tire when I engage the clutch in first AND when I rev up fast in low gear and then let off all at once (so basically anytime there is heavy torque forward or backward). It sounds like someone hitting on the axle with a ball-ping hammer. I checked the drum brakes, but they don't look like they have any issues. So I have my suspicions: 1. Rear axle U-joint 2. Rear axle bearing However, wouldn't a bad bearing be whining at higher speeds (no whining present). Anyway, my bet is on the u-joint going out, but IDK.

Am I seeing the parts CD correctly? The oil pan reinforcements go between the block and the pan gasket? Where should I put gasket seal, between the pan & gasket, between the gasket and the reinforcements and also between the reinforcements and the block? Thanks

Hi all Based on this chart: http://www.zhome.com/ZCMnL/tech/128combo.html I've decided on going the 2949cc route by way of L28 block + L24 rods + KA24 pistons in STD 89mm width That chart lists part number 12010-40f10 for the std diameter 89mm unit and lists a zero cc dish volume. I assume that means these are flat top pistons. However when I look up this p/n I invariably find images of the dished Ka24de turbo piston And then when doing a similar p/n search on nismoparts.com I came across an advertised Ka24 flat top piston but with a slightly different part number: 12010-40f72 Can someone confirm which is the right p/n before I place a non-returnable special parts order a…

My Haines Manuel recommends to drai the cooling water at two plugs. One is the radiator's and another one should be on the left side of the engine. I can't find what Haynes means. Where is it ?

Hi Everyone, I am finally reassembling my engine and have a question. I have 2 engines, the original one and one from the parts car. I have ended up with duplicate parts and do not know which is from the original engine. There are subtle differences that hopefully someone can help determine which is the older. One set was connected by a metal pipe and with the other set, they were connected by a hose. There are also differences in casting numbers. I am trying to use the older set that went with the older engine. Thanks! Carl

Greetings! I have a '70 240 and have a 5 speed bolted to it. Unfortunately, my 5 speed blew, and I'm putting in a 4 speed in temporarily. I've removed the old 5, and slid the input shaft of the "new" 4 speed into the car. Oddly, it appears that most, if not all bolts on the bell housing do not line up with the engine block!! Is this normal? My motor is an L24. The 4 speed is from a '72 240. I figured that a 4 speed out of a later model 240 should bolt right up into my early model 240 (since they both came with the same motor). Is this incorrect? It even appears that the dust shield on my car doesnt mate up to the transmission... Any help is much appreciated. I'd reall…
