  1. I had a new windshield put in my truck today. While they were here I had them put a new windshield in Lily. It took them maybe 20 minutes. About $300 and they'll warranty it I also received these from DriftHQ the other day. These adapt the factory hub spindle to to the 300ZX turbo CV axles
  2. Not much to report...in the home stretch of weld repair now...patch..weld..clean..repeat... My poor metal brake held up on some 14 gauge to cap front of the lower frame rail .... And they say you can never get to 100 percent rust free ... this firewall repair pic tells the story... Almost ready for lift off 😉 I hope to wrap up welding in about a week and to be a rolling shell sometime in March...

The "Flat-Earth Society" insult is an obvious sign that the discussion has degraded. There are no winners when things get this bad. Why not just stop posting? At least if you start a new thread we can all use the Ignore function of the forum so we don't have to see it.

  5. If you use a bit of rubber silicone grease around the shaft before installing the boot, it will be a water proof seal there for many years to come.

  9. Sorry, but what a load of absolute bollocks. Alan has contributed a lot of useful insights over many years not just in this forum, but other forums, as well as on social media, BAT comments etc.. and many of us appreciate the insights, information and knowledge he's shared with us. If you care to look you'll find over 20 years of posts on this forum alone sharing a wealth of information with those open enough to receiving it, especially when it comes to the in period rally cars, the 432's and 432-R's, HS30-H models etc.. and the people involved with these cars at Nissan and beyond. The flat earth comments seem somewhat appropriate given the fact that despite all evidence some people chose to just ignore the facts and continue on believing what they want to believe. Or to quote Jonathan Swift "You cannot reason someone out of something he or she was not reasoned into". This is my opinion after observing many back and forth similar discussions of a similar nature over the years, on here and via other mediums. Over what Nissan's priority for these cars was, and if it was truly designed with an American market as #1 market in mind or not. But also the flat out refusal to acknowledge that series 1, series 2 labels are a very loose naming convention with far too many holes to hold factual weight when looking at these cars with any degree to accuracy or critical thinking in mind. If knowing the facts and understanding what these cars are about and their history with any degree of accuracy is going to put off folks from "joining the club" then perhaps the flat earth society is the right place for them anyway? Or maybe something that's a bit more safe like collecting stamps? I don't know of other car communities for other makes and models where getting the facts right is frowned upon? After all to the right collector/enthusiast the small details (and prices reflected) matter. Take for example the N1 versions of the R32/R33/R34 GTRs, which I view in a similar light to the 432-r's. They command bigger dollars due to their rarity and specialness and it's all the little details that matter. Prices paid, reflect this. I mean just typing that out seems preposterous to me. At the end of the day when most North American's refer to cars as being series 1 or series 2, I get what they are 'trying to say'. But the problem is, when you live in other parts of the world (shock horror) these labels are very problematic, because they effectively mean nothing and therefore if you ask 10 different folks what series 1 vs series 2 means you'll often get 10 different ideas (as seen from previous comments in here just recently also).

  11. Does the fan include the fan clutch? I'm 90% sure my fan clutch wasn't working. The fan always ran. I'm not sure what temperature the clutch should engage at, but mine always ran (after I got the engine running again in 2020). Regardless, I'm happy to cover the cost of a new fan! Don't you need the weatherstrip kit before you do the windshield and hatch? That's the part that's currently holding up the MSA order. It's apparently going to arrive "any day", just like it was at Datsun Garage (I'm not comparing the two suppliers - the experience working with the two is night and day). I think the problem must be with the supplier of the kit, as they're the ones giving out unrealistic delivery dates to their dealers. Have I mentioned how great it all looks? I'm hoping to be able to drop in next Thursday afternoon for the first time since you painted the car!
  12. Condensers (aka capacitors) for electrical noise reduction (alternator) and protect points & electrical noise reduction (ignition). Unless you're using a stock radio or similar vintage, you don't need them.
  13. Some how I have manged to misplace the rad fan, I've looked everywhere 4-5 times, no luck. How do I loose something that big? Fortunately a friend has a spare he's willing to sell me, my fault my dime. Exhaust manifold and carbs are on, as soon as that wheel bearing shows up I can get the car down and start working on the windshield and hatch.

  17. There has to be a reason its 400 more. Looking at the pictures on the websites I noticed that the Vintage dash has the metal integrated into the center dash area and the datsun garage one doesn't seem to have that. Maybe call vintage and ask why you should buy their dash. Still cheaper than I paid for Just dashes. Your car is going to look great.
  18. Never worked in a corporate setting, but I think I've heard my wife who does work in a corporate setting say many times over the years to (Take it offline). Zed tried to by offering a pertinent discussion on the thread "Z's on Bat and other places", but that trial balloon got popped as soon as it was floated. I really enjoy this thread, I really dont want to unsub. I havnt looked, but is there a specific 240z thread discussing the topic at hand, which I think began with someone calling a car a series 1 or something. BTW, I own a 1/71 car, that was one of the last few made in the image of a 1970, I wont dare call it that forbidden name though.
  19. Great job when I got to this stage those tubes were so clogged and corroded inside it took an overnight bath in WD-40 and then I actually had to boil them in water to soften whatever was inside to finally loosen it enough to blow clear hopefully yours aren't so bad
  20. Once u have all clean parts. It is not that hard to put back everything. Took me less than 30 mins. Need to buy new rubber inserts for the cowl top. Old ones showing precious yellow paint ☺️

  22. I put mine in a pickel bath when I plate but not for very long and it's not heated. I haven't had any issues. But acids vary and his Ph might be really low.
  23. The Fan clutch if it is not an aftermarket piece is rebuildable Basically you split it clean it and replace the heavy weight oil in it
  24. Went down the same road you are speaking of the first time. I’m running ZX turbo axles now with no issues. The adapters you portray was my initial try and yes they bind on the left side. Was hoping the adapters @Patcon found would alleviate that. I’ve got aftermarket axles never used on my shelf collecting dust.
  25. Do you have some axles? They're hard to find. People have reported that the aftermarket replacement axles are longer than the factory units and bind. I think that those adapters might cause binding also. The only adapters that seem to work are the ones that use the original axle flange as the mating surface and build the adapter around it. Something to be aware of. If you have adjustable control arms you can always widen the track.   28. I'm going to downshift to 2nd here - heel and toe of course. I was taught, by employees of Datsun US and several parts mgrs, to refer to all MODELS of their products by the production date. Vins only came into play in a VERY FEW ISOLATED cases. When I get a call from a Z owner who starts the conversation by calling his baby a Series 1.75 I cut him or her off and ask for the PD, just as I was taught by the persons already mentioned.
  29. Perhaps we could all agree to disagree on the subject of the Z series question. Knowing that there were improvements throughout the model years I will continue to describe the difference between Series I and II 240 Z as the hatch vents move to the C-pillars. I believe that was all it was meant to describe (in the USA) originally.

  32. You are - at least - consistent. A quality you share with The Flat Earth Society. A further example of EXACTLY what I have been pointing out. Where does 'Datsun 240Z' come from? You are either in denial or you have not even seen the original. Which is it? Chapter 2 title in original: "Fairlady Z no kaihatsu ni itaru made" (tr: 'Leading up to the development of the Fairlady Z'). Chapter 3 title in original: "Fairlady Z no kaihatsu" (tr: 'Development of the Fairlady Z'). You quote from the 'translated' English language version as though the original Japanese version doesn't exist. I'll keep saying it, the English language version is mis-translated to the level of Bowdlerization. Changing the all-encompassing 'Fairlady Z', 'Maru Z' and 'Z' terms that Uemura san uses to 'Datsun 240Z' completely subverts his original intention. I believe you had a hand in that. You have form. Even so, anybody who reads the English language version should easily see that Uemura san and his engineering team - also Matsuo san and his styling team - were engaged to design, engineer and develop a family of Domestic and Export market variants. The family of variants is mentioned time and time again. These processes took place contemporaneously, with engineering and design consideration for each variant having an impact on the other variants in the family. Uemura san's list of the 5 Chassis Test cars and the 11 Primary Prototype cars clearly show this. I think any engineer worth his salt would understand what this process involves. You simply cannot focus on one particular variant and treat the others as afterthoughts. One more thing. Uemura san includes a quote of some paragraphs from Teiichi Hara's own book (recommended, BTW). Hara san was manager of the First Design Department at Nissan and Uemura san quotes Hara san because he relates a KEY stage in Nissan's Go/No Go stage of the Maru Z project. Without passing this stage, Nissan's senior management simply would not have given clearance for the engineering and styling work to proceed. What was the deciding factor? The deciding factor was the inclusion of the road-going version of the Prince GR8 twin cam engine (the Nissan S20 two litre 24v twin cam six) as an option in the engineering and styling of the Maru Z project. Hara san described this as "A complete victory". Without it, they would not have got the go-ahead for the whole family of variants. It is a very revealing anecdote, the kind that automotive journalists and marque/model scholars set great store by. Will we ever read about this on zhome.com? I'm not holding my breath...
  33. Thanks everyone. Dutchzcarguy- I have found my old eyes do well with apple phone photos enlarged on the screen. I am going to try to get under it this Sunday. I bought a new speedo cable from Z car depot and a new Pinion, had to get a 17 tooth, the 16 seems to be on the endangered list. I believe the extra tooth will lower by about 5 miles , I have different wheel so the speedo was oof between 5 and 8ish MPH anyway. Patcon- Since I am going to just start replacing stuff I will start the removal of the speedo cable at the speedo and see if it is spinning. I hope this works I liked having a speedo! Hopefully it has a happy ending- I will update ...thanks
  34. Unfortunately the decision was taken - I don't know by whom - to alter the text in order to make it more palatable to a (presumably?) American audience in the English language version. There are some inexplicable omissions too. Changing 'Fairlady Z' to 'Datsun 240Z' in the title and the text is not a translation. The sense in which Uemura san uses the term 'Fairlady Z' encompasses the whole family of variants in the 'Maru Z' project on which he and his colleagues were working from 1966 through 1969 and beyond. Substituting 'Datsun 240Z' does not. Indeed, it renders some parts of the text illogical and subverts the original intention. It turns an inclusive into a divisive. It also serves to reinforce the mistruth of statements such as "The real story of the Z Car - is carried by the Datsun 240-Z - as specified, as designed, as built for the American market" when Uemura san's original text made it clear that this was not the case. Ironic isn't it?
  35. Surprised the Apex unit doesn’t bolt in without modifying the wheel tub! Thats a lot to ask of someone doing a simple subframe upgrade let alone a resto.

  37. Sorry this happened - I can imagine how you felt when it happened, and how you feel now. Regarding the best option for dashes, I believe Vintage Dashes is the best option. When I bought mine, in came in a box via UPS/Fedex. You have to re-use your metal frame, but removing the old and mounting the new on the frame is not difficult. I don't recommend Just Dashes. They repair the existing dashboard. They retain a lot of the original foam which is old and brittle. And, if the dash has large cracks, the "pieces" have moved somewhat from the their original locations when the pad was all one piece. I had one done by them years ago and it ended up having fit issues around the glove box door and being a tad oversize... with the gauges fitting extremely tight. I feel like the result would be questionable at best for a pad that is cracked severely. And, I think they are even more expensive than Vintage Dashes. Garrett
