  1. Good video. It looks to me like the pistons are rising too rapidly the first time when you goose it and they overshoot. Then they recover where they should be and rise with the engine RPMs as they should. That overshoot situation results in a short lean burst when you goose it. Just like your what you describe with your stumble off idle. In fact, that's the exact reason the piston dampers exist in the first place. There are typically two things that can typically cause that: 1) The first thing to look into is... Are your damper dashpots working properly? Because if they aren't then it won't matter WHAT kind of oil you're running in the carbs. So when you stick a finger in and manually lift up on the piston. Is it hard to lift up, or can you push it all the way up easily? Does it leave a dent in your finger? 2) The other thing to think about is the oil (or ATF if that's what you are using). If the dashpots are working properly, then maybe the oil is too thin allowing the piston to rise too quickly. Simple thing to try is running some heavier oil in there. I used to run ATF, but recently switched to 20W-50. But you have to make sure the dashpots are working correctly before you start trying other oil weights.
  2. The three screw carbs had different length float valves than the earlier 4 screw carbs. Here is some info about fuel level settings from a few years back.
  3. Quick update as promised: I fitted the Z story exhaust and in the process found that on the original header gasket there were several exhaust leaks and a small vac leak on cyl 6. With new header and gasket, the car runs just fine. Amazing how much fuss a little air leak can cause! The Z story system is a thing of beauty and performs well. Sean the supplier is also a very decent chap who has been most helpful post sales. And finally something to scare and entertain you with:
  4. I got curious about the need to shave or skim the head if it was out of spec. for flatness. My head was at the limit, bowed up in the middle, so I put it back on with no head gasket and tightened it back down to see how much it would take to make it flat again. It didn't take much to close the gap. I'm pretty sure that the How to Rebuild book uses a wider range also, I seem to recall .007", not the .004" that Nissan uses. The resurfacing has always bothered me because it leaves the valve train spec'ed to a different surface than the bottom of the head after skimming. The valve train is still warped. But if you tighten it back to flat using bolts then the valve train should straighten out also. Just a thought.
  5. That's my new wallpaper for the next month, gorgeous. Gotta love a deep dignified blue.
  6. I measured the floats using the clear tube method and the fuel level is 23mm below the bottom of the float lid (where it meets the gasket) for the rear carb and the front is at 28mm for the same measurement. I've read a lot about 23mm being the correct level but am I measuring it from the correct point? I'm assuming they both should be 23mm? The front carb had a lean backfire a few times. I suppose this could be the reason.
  7. I'm thinking of all new suspension rubber, strut bearings and the Koni's with stock springs. Found the OEM insulators for the $64.21 on Amazon with free shipping which makes the price difference from after market only about $40! https://www.amazon.com/1970-1978-Nissan-Front-Insulator-54320-E4100/dp/B00TNL7LTK
  8. I had a similar problem. It was due to the ignition switch in the steering column "carboning up". When turning the key fully Clockwise (100%) to Crank/Start, only the electrical contact in the switch for the starter would make, the EFI/ignition contact was kaput and would not give spark. The mystery was that this was intermittent... but becoming worse. I found that if I turned the key to crank only ~ 80% to 90% of the way (where the electrical contacts would all make, it would start fine. Changing out the switch cured the problem.
  9. I’ve considered new strut rubber mounts solely for the reason of NVH. After years of abuse I would think the rubber gets work hardened and brittle and does not absorb the road noise as well. How much can we ask from 45 year old rubber parts ? One reason I have NOT gone the coil over design is because of the pillow mount which eliminates the rubber cushion . These cars ride harsh enough with stiffer springs and shocks , then connect everything without rubber - eek. I guess it depends on your usage . I’m looking for more refinement in my ride and still have it sporty . I’ve considered new strut mounts to help with this. As far as OEM vs aftermarket , a 100$ difference for 4 items I can do . Ideally I’d like adjustable Koni and all new rubber with my ST Springs . Camber can be achieved by slotting the mounting holes for the insulators , but some might not feel comfortable with that.
  10. The car looks great on the road!
  11. Thank you @siteunseen Here is the direct link to make it a little easier. https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/49682-diy-datsun-script-emblem-repair-refurbishment/
  12. I finally have my meeting with the engineer to see if he is happy to sign off on all of my modifications. Fingers crossed.

Ditto. Been thinking of John often lately and realized it has been over 3 years. RIP.
  15. Petrolicious does an excellent video about one of my favorite Peking to Paris teams.. Chris & Tjerk Bury...
  16. What Mark said... What kind of oil did you use to fill the damper tubes on the SU's when you put them on? It sounds like a classic case of too thin of an oil or a damper dashpot not working properly. Can you elaborate a little on the "chatter" you mentioned with the pistons? Any chance you can take a video of that?
  17. What weight oil are you using in the SUs?
  18. CruiZer(currently not) & Racer... Chris
  19. Yes he's from the UK. I think just give hime a phone-call or send him an email. I got in touch through facebook with his (i assume) fiance who handled all the orders and email, but i think you can contact him directly through the contact on the sticker. I guess that's why they put the stickers on the parts *lol*
  20. This would be fun too: Or if I had a three car garage:
