3 pointsI've read time and time again on here about matching proper components with each other. My best example is the hottest motor with old ignition system. I bought a really nice television and after all the hassle of getting it home and hooked through all my stuff was very disappointed with the outcome. I was frustrated and about to box it back up and get a cheaper no frills tv, much cheaper. Then the light bulb flickered in my noggin. I need the newest version cable box from xfinity. It'll be here in a few days so until then I'm watching stuff through the internet source and it's amazing. My eyebrows melted. 20230108_144344.mp43 points

I actually reached out to Philip a couple of years ago on Linkedin when I had not heard from him in a while. I think @Captain Obvious may have talked on the phone with him, too. I know I miss his presence here, and I really appreciate the fact that he went out of his way to come up to my place when he was in town and showed me a lot about adjusting valves and tuning SUs. I hope he's enjoying his guitars. I'm sure he's doing creative things with them.3 points

3 pointsJust over four years ago my buddy @zed2 and I heard that there were some parts available a bit north of us so we made a road trip up to Sherman TX. We met with a guy that owned his own railroad station (another story there!) and he explained that a good friend was in the VA hospital dying of cancer. The friend was an old Datsun mechanic that had assembled some parts over the years and this guy was trying to sell some of them to help with the friend's bills. We followed him to another community and were introduced to what turned out to be a motherload of Z parts. There were several S30's and a couple of S130's on the property, a small dilapidated pole shed with some parts and a 30' shipping container. When opened, the shippiing container revealed boxes of parts lining both walls, all marked with the contents. With only limited time available that day we made a hurried sample inspection and made arrangements for a return trip with more time and more money. On the return trip we moved and inspected every box, setting aside those of further interest. I ended up with a lengthy list of purchases that filled the entire cargo compartment of my Xterra. A hoped for third trip was not to happen as the mechainc died and his property went into probate with the nearest family in Nebraska. I often wonder what became of the remaining parts hoard.3 points

I'd like to encourage you to rebuild the diff with its 4.8 ratio intact. If you want to use the car for some events using a different ratio, I think it would be better to have another diff on hand for that. The tyre diameter on the car - if using something close to the period Works Dunlops - will mitigate the ratio. I don't think it will be as drastic as you might imagine. And even if it does seem a little frantic, that's the nature of a Works '71 Monte car... The Works team used anything up to 5.1 ratio in period, so with a 4.8 you're not even at 11 on your Marshall amp.3 points

2 pointsTelevision has changed considerably over the years. As a boy, dad refused to get a color TV as he felt the technology was too new and too expensive, so we always had black ac white. Of course TV was broadcast via the airwaves, and we got 3 channels, ABC, NBC, CBS, and sometimes, with the right amount of aluminum foil on the antenna we also got PBS, and a local independent station. When I moved out on my own, a television was a luxury, so I didn’t have one. That changed in 1986 when I fractured two thoracic vertebrae. The doctor said I could go to the hospital ad be in full body traction for six weeks, or go home and lay on a sheet of plywood for six weeks. I chose the latter. On my way home from the doctor I stopped by Sears, ordered a color TV, stopped by the cable company and ordered cable. The next day the TV was delivered, the cable guy came and hooked me up, and I lay on my back watching TV for a month and a half. Today I have a 55” flat screen in the living room, a 55” flatscreen upstairs in my man cave, a 30” flatscreen in the bedroom, and not one, but two flatscreen TVs in my shop, a 40” and a 60”. I record almost all racing related programming, and mostly watch car related programs.2 points

I used to worry that the government was listening until I realized that I really don't matter to them. Google on the other hand, really cares about making sure I get the best deal on a refrigerator or heat pump.2 points

2 pointsYeah.. television has come a long way since i repaired my first b/w Philips TV! (this was in 1977.. i was 16! .. now am 61.. pfff.. and A LOT tv's further!) I watch a lot of youtube on my 4k tv and often amazed about how sharp these tv's are these days..2 points

2 pointsMy "Ben Herman" story: Around 2000 a guy that had won a Nissan Vintage Z at a charity auction in Miami, Fl contacted me for information and advice. He had kept the VZ for just over a year and decided to resell it. He had bid on it just to contribute to the charity and wasn't a "Z Guy". I told him as much as I could about the VZ's and suggested putting it on Ebay with a reasonable reserve. At that time, that would have been something around $20K. (it was an A/T example). About a month later I saw it on Ebay with an opening Bid at $9,000.00. I was surprised that I did not see the usual “Reserve Not Met”. So just to check, I put a Bid of $9100.00 in - and still not seeing any mention of a Reserve, I contacted the Seller suggesting that he end that auction, then re-list it with a Reserve. He did not do that and instead seemed angry with me for suggesting its sale on Ebay. I would find out a little later why the seller was mad at me…. Ben Herman put in another bid a few seconds before the end of the auction and “won” the car for $9,200.00. Ben wrote me a day or two later to say he was sorry to have “snipped me” on that auction. I replied saying that I had not put any higher bid in on the car, as I had no intention of buying it - I was just checking to see if there was or wasn’t a Reserve. (AIR - I had about 6 or 7 240Z’s already and no place to put any more). A few days later - I found out that Ben had ask the seller to hold the car for him, for 3 or 4 months, as he needed to sell some other parts to raise the money. The Seller told him that would be fine, if Ben sent a 10% non-refundable deposit. A couple more months went by and Ben had not sent the $920.00 deposit. Now I knew why the seller was upset, but I never understood why he blamed me for his mis-handling of the sale. So, I told a friend of mine about the situation and suggested that he contact the seller directly and offer to buy the car. Which he did. The Seller and Buyer reached an agreed to price and the Buyer picked the VZ up the next day.2 points

I have searched for the old topic i ones made but can't find it anymore.. So made a new topic and i do have a set of 3 rare (same) parts.. for sale but it aint a cheap.... Here some ultra rare EURO rare licenceplate lighting units... in more or less good condition.. one is without the glass incerts.. sold them many years ago for a few euro.. 1 polished and 2 are in grease.. the polished one is on the rest of the pic's. Those "rings" on the last one is not rust but just a sort of dirt that comes off easely.. ( They , the 2 unpolished ones have a bit of rust on the inside.)1 point

1 pointHA! That brought back a memory. We got NBC - channel 29, and PBS, sort of... and CBS "kinda" if the weather was "odd". Nowadays, I bet I watch less than 4 hours of TV a year. I do watch movies and some series on Netflix... occasional movies on Amazon, and a lot car related content and some premier league soccer highlights on Youtube. Projector and screen in the entertainment room... and a 45" (I think) that I barely use... in the main living area. Recording and watching auto racing sounds like something I'd like. By the way, the people they use in television commercials now generally disgust me. I guess that is a far as I will go with that.1 point

I completely agree with this statement. I does look better than all the other candidates they have offered up. You can certainly expect there is a whole lot worse you can't see. And this is just classic.....sounds like they are selling a new car. ..."lighter with an ashtray" "sun visors" Amenities include air conditioning, driver-side mirror, manual-crank windows, analog clock, Hitachi vintage radio, center console, lighter with an ashtray, sun visors, glove compartment, and rear window louvers.1 point

Restoration of BringaTrailer 240z - HLS30-35883
I noticed my cowl panel was "oil canning" a bit on the right side and it wasn't sitting down on the foam padding (closed cell) like it was on the left side. Perhaps that sand blasting of the panel I did a long time ago distorted it a bit? Can't really tell from the pics: It pained me to do it, but I ground off the primer and filler from the top surface of the right side, worked on it to shrink the metal, and after the oil canning was corrected, put new epoxy primer, and filler on. Finishing up with that today and will apply primer. Something I found that may be useful to others: There is no height adjustment on cowl panel "per se". In order to adjust for any mismatch in height between the fender inner edge and the top surface of the cowl panel, you have to bend the cowl panel sheet metal. After stripping it to bare metal again, I was messing with bending it and noticed that this area is very thin, probably thinner than originally because of stripping off the paint: I noticed that even relatively light pressure applied at the corner there caused this thin part to flex and the height of the corner to move a little. And, in fact, the tool I was using to shrink the metal "blew through it" in one spot. So, I decided to make that area stronger to keep the panel from moving later (after paint). Front, back, and card board template: Template shape transferred to metal, the cut out piece, the spot welding tool to minimize heat: Front and back after welding: I performed this mod to both sides of the cowl panel. 9 and 1/2 hours of work yesterday. Time to get back to it.1 point

1 pointHis name was Ben Herman. His Obituary. He used to buy 240z's (only) that he found out about a printed, regional publication that was around at the time. It may have been called "old car trader"? Whatever it was called, I recall seeing his ads in it and that is how I came to meet him. At the time I dealt with him 1994/1995, he kept everything in his basement. The Fairlady Z we parted out had some interesting parts on it. It was very restorable (he said is was a shame to part that one out) but I was 25 at the time and in the middle of a restoration on my 1971 Z (my first one that I still have) that was taking all of my time and money (cost me my girlfriend eventually too!) Anyway, it had a 5 speed, a 3.70 rear diff, and some really thick rubber, floor and hatch mats. I recall them being about like a quarter to half inch thick. They appeared to be factory. Right hand drive of course, with L20A engine. Anyway, it sounds like he built that inventory out quite a bit. I know is inventory of early Z parts was extensive as he had special interest in the early cars.1 point

No way that I have found to confirm it - - but it is the highest number VIN I've seen so far on a Datsun 240Z. According to the VIN information published by Nissan - in the Factory Service Bulletins - HLS30 172732 was the last North American Spec. According to my notes - HLS30 172733 is in Colombia. HLS30 172753 was in New Zealand . Who knows? - might have been a couple more with higher VIN's sent to Europe/Africa etc. As of 1999 - it was owned by Tom Faulkner. Tom said the 240Z was originally sent to "Europe" directly from Japan. Tom bought it from the original owner in Switzerland and brought it back to Chicago six years prior. (so around 1993). Tom wrote: "It has a five speed transmission and left hand drive. The two front turn signals are not the curved type but are mounted on the top of the front bumper. It has a black air foil on the back door lid. It doesn't have any air pump stuff like the previous 240Z I had." It was on Craigs List in Tucon, AZ in 2015 having been inherited... I have never seen those license plate lamps, very cool! These were removed at the dealer when the customer wanted mags on his new z. The customer gave them to me in the early 80's when he was cleaning out his attic.1 point- 1970 240Z Works Rally - the road to restoration
Hi, I looked at magazines in my room and I couldn’t find any clear pictures of the diff oil cooler installed on other Works cars. There is a picture of 1973 Safari Winner car’s fuel filters and pumps, and hand written diagram! By the way, I didn’t know the 1973 Safari Winner has extended seat brackets like a Fairlady Z series even that car is LHD. Is it unusual isn’t it? Note the steel protector underneath of the diff, the picture is 1971 Safari Winner. It has straight floors, unbelievable for the car won the toughest rally at that time.
