1976 280 Z from Ohio to Dubai
3 pointsGood day guys, Another milestone achieved: exactly 5 months after taking the wheels off, Zinta is back on the ground. Last beating on the rear quarter panels and bumper to use as little as possible body filler, and also 3 spots on the roof to correct... Doors/Trunk/Boot/air dam/fenders are ready for the final coat. Tomorrow afternoon or Sunday morning latest we shall lay down the final blue coat !3 points

Datsun Spirit ITB's
3 pointsThanks Man, being in good shape has really helped me, first with the chemo, then with the surgery. I'm on a drug that targets a rare mutation in the cancer, only 1% of cancers have it, so hopefully that will buy me some time! I appreciate all the good wishes from everyone, positive energy helps me cope ! Mark3 points

2 pointsOf course, the Datsun will be replaced by a more modern sports car, something we can take on a cross Canada drive and be comfortable. What would your choice be? I like the look of the C8!2 points

Datsun Spirit ITB's
2 pointsYou can make yourself crazy by worrying about all of the possible causes for those things that we would all prefer to stay clear of: cancers, alzheimer's, parkinson's, whatever. As a reformed smoker, I'm particularly leery of inhalable stuff: particulates (looking at my blasting cabinet), fumes (looking at my MIG welder), and can't-see-it stuff (looking at the isocyanate-catalyzed paint that I bought but now won't use). All of us car-hobby people get careless from time to time, and we will never be able to be quite sure whether, for example, that time when we blew out a brake caliper with compressed air was the culprit. And then there all of the other unknowns. Like airborne virus transmissions in public building ventilation systems. Or the asymptomatic carrier sitting across the aisle on the bus. Or radon gas in your basement. Or driving in city traffic. Life is dangerous. But all we can do is take reasonable precautions. Otherwise, it gets silly and you spend all your time worrying. Unfortunately, life is unpredictable, too. We all need to remind ourselves to make the most of our time. A little creating-and-restoring-and-improving in the garage or workshop is part of that for most of us here, of course. I hope lots more members reach out to our friend, Mark / NorthernZ, even if it's just with a few words of support. Hang in there, buddy. We're all pulling for you.2 points

Wiring issues
2 pointsThe series 1 240Z headlight switch, completed the ground circuit (black wire and a red wire on the contacts of the headlight switch) and a constant positive feed to the headlights. The series 2 (Feb of 71?) had a white/red and a solid red on the headlight switch contacts. So the headlight switch controls the positive and the hi/lo beam switch controlled the grounds. So the series 1 had ground switching and the series 2 had positive switching.2 points

2 pointsCertainly not $2,000 worth of cars here. Looking at the additional pictures it doesn’t even look like there is enough to make one complete car from the two. I still would haul them away for the seller. It wouldn’t be worth the time and effort to spend any money buying them if the goal was to make money parting them out. And to try and resurrect them makes no sense at two grand for the pair.2 points

2 pointsSo far it looks pretty good, I let it sit all day in the sun to use the free UV radiation. Put it back outside for the rest of the day, I’m pretty happy with the results.2 points

1 pointHey Patcon, I took Zantac on and off for a long time! 31 years as an Air Traffic Controller did a number on my digestion! The problem with Zantac is it is metabolized into a compound called MDMA, I think, which is highly carcinogenic. The makers of Zantac KNEW this and kept quiet about it, hence the lawsuit. Namerow, you are right, you can never be sure what caused the cancer, and it's futile to speculate. Take precautions as best you can to protect yourself and live your life! For all I know it could be burnt rubber or racing fuel fumes that caused it! There was a lot of that in my youth! Grannyknot, I never took Prevacid, but any of these drugs can be problematic, I always tried natural remedies first, but even those can cause unforeseen problems I met with a friend today for coffee and he wants first crack at the car, so when I finally am ready to let go, I'll offer it to him first.1 point

Engine Timing Cover
1 pointwhen working on fiddly bits I will hold a small magnet, the kind you use to retrieve stuff on a telescoping rod, next to the item I am working on, if something get loose the magnet tends to grab it.1 point

Engine Timing Cover
1 pointI have a pair of these that would do the job. They come in small size. Hope you haven't replaced the seal yet, you don't want to try to squeeze in there with the seal installed. Worst case, if it does fall in to the cover it won't hurt anything. It will just sit there, waiting for some future owner to find and wonder about. https://www.amazon.com/VISE-GRIP-Original-Locking-Pliers-1602L3/dp/B0000BYD9A/ref=sr_1_8?dchild=1&keywords=vise-grip&qid=1614964787&s=hi&sr=1-81 point

When is it time to give up the Z?
Thanks for all y'alls replies. I am planning on ZCon, but there's no way I'm moving away from my 5 grands. If I was going to do that it would be to New Zealand. I hope to meet up with some of you in CSprings. I last went to a Z car show when MSA did there's out in Anaheim. I even met the esteemed Mike G. who is our fearless leader here. For now Mr. Brown is in his Winter hibernation under cover with a trickle charger. I should be bringing him back to life sometime in April. Anyway, sometime in the next few years I will have to make the decision about him, but for now I'll just motate along. I've thought about the power steering option, but it is just a bit too pricey for now, and it is one of those contortion jobs which are painful to old bodies. If I got a few more years I just might re-think that, however. Thanks again. This is a pretty good place to hang out with all you crazy Z guys. Cheers, Mike1 point

Zedhead, I'm thinking a lot of that shine is from a ceramic coating. A lot more shine than stock but it is "modified" and it is a lot easier to keep clean.1 point

1 pointI have tested for Radon and the levels were below the threshold. I used to take Zantac for indigestion and now it is the subject of a class action lawsuit for causing cancer, so maybe? No way to know I suppose. It is becoming more common among people who never smoked. Interesting fact, lung cancer kills more people every year than Colon, breast and pancreatic cancer combined, but receives far less research funding. Thanks for the support!1 point

Rear Drum Brakes Backing Plate
1 pointGlad to help. So yeah, it's just age and rust that's holding it together (like me). Clean some rust and old paint off the spindle snout where the plate rides, douse it with penetrating lube of choice, and give it a whack on the back side. Out of curiosity... Why are you taking it apart in the first place? Disk brake conversion? Cleaning everything up for paint? The reason I ask is that if you already have the bearings out and those plates off, I would take the opportunity to upgrade to the 77-78 style backing plates so you can use the better wheel cylinders. I would try very hard to not go back to the 70-76 style floating cylinders. They're not nearly as reliable as the newer system. But that's just me... I've got a 77.1 point

Dome Light Repair
1 pointYeah, that looks good. I would probably stop there. So this peroxide and UV combination thing... Is this internets science? Most times UV makes plastic worse, not better. Not arguing with the results, but wondering if the UV was really adding any value?1 point

1 pointAre you going drive up to Kent and take a look at them? One could remind the real estate agent the property is worth more without 'junk cars' sitting on it. and offer a much lower price. No titles doesn't make them parts cars, it just makes them a lot cheaper in my book. We bought our 81 RX7 with no title. It took couple of months and a bit of frustration because the original owner lived in Washington and we needed an Oregon title but we succeeded.1 point

2 Wires on 73 240 ignition not on replacement
The newer ignition switches had a little set of contacts inside that would activate a beeper if you left the ignition key in the slot. They called it an "anti-theft" feature and I'm assuming that it was a reminder to not leave the keys in the ignition switch when you left the car (like anyone does that anymore...). The earlier cars did not have that feature and the little beeper switch was not present inside the ignition switch. So I don't know what year you're working on, but the wires in question are related to that feature.1 point

2 Wires on 73 240 ignition not on replacement
Welcome to the forum! Is that hot glue on whatever its connected to? We really like photos on this forum. Photos that are a bit clearer will be helpful, and are ones that we prefer. We also like photos of shiny stuff. 🤤 That might be what is labeled on the wiring diagram on the factory service manual section BE-5 as a "Rheostat". See that knob in on the right? Whats that connected to? It should be to dim the interior lights.1 point

1 pointI did the map light as well. I think I posted some details about that somewhere... But if I did, the pics are probably dead on that too. Here's what I used and I think it's fantastic! I'm not sure all years used the wedge base though.1 point

Tuning With An Air/Fuel Gauge
1 pointThe residual oxygen in the exhaust is a reliable indicator of the ratio of fuel and air at the inlet. This is true given a working and reasonable ignition and cam timing. Engine Management systems do work on this basis. I mean, as well as that being an assumption they make, they actually do work well in optimising fuel mixtures.1 point

1976 280 Z from Ohio to Dubai
1 pointMost people are thinking stop! (this discussion) but i keep saying this : those are NOT the official jack points of a (240z-280z) s30 chassis.. so use the right spots. Later on when you have a flat tire the chassis has to be strong enough to use a jack anyway! Use some rubber blocks with a slice in it for the chassis edge. It's gona be a beautiful car, good job!1 point

I can't tell from the photo if you have it bolted down yet but I have always heard to start in the middle and tighten them down. Working your way to the ends as you go. Maybe the others could correct me but that's what I've always done.1 point

0 pointsHey BAS-DXB, unfortunately I am not doing well and I have not been able to work on the Zed for some time. I may have to sell it soon due to health concerns, I had surgery to remove a lung due to cancer, which has regrettably returned. Never smoked and was a fitness nut until I started getting short of breath working out. Any way I think that duffymahoney on this site would be a great guy to ask questions about ITB's. He is much more knowledgeable than I! Good luck with your project!0 points
