  1. My feelings exactly Jeff. In 1970 and 71, no one noticed the stock Z’s with skinny tires and rolling around the turns. When one came by with front and rear spoilers, lowered and a tuned exhaust music, a nice set of 7 inch wheels, it turned the heads. Some like a museum piece ( not me or Brandon) and that’s ok....to each his own. When you have a Z set up right, there ain’t nothing like it.....you know what I’m talking about ( your race car included). They are meant to be drivers....easy to modify, and a blast to be driven.....thanks for the compliment....why I consider you in the same fraternity as me and Brandon!!!!!!! Guy

I try to always look at the facts before making assumptions vs people who make assumptions and then look for “facts” to support their view. Conspiracy Theories are not just the product of stupid people we have some very intelligent people who somehow fall for this stuff too. The fact of the matter many times there is some truth to many of them so it reinforces their way of thinking, just like AK260 said about NSA that is able to listen to phone conversations and keeping all text data in a national data base, I have a very close friend that is highly intelligent and successful but he is one of these guys that is always talking about Conspiracy Theories. We’ve been friend since 1989 and so I know him well, he was my best man at my wedding. He believes in the stupid conspiracy theory that the contrails you see from jet liners are “Chemtrails”, emitted by government to control the population. I told him how stupid this theory is. I’ve been flying airplanes since 1993. I fly for one of the worlds biggest airlines, I know the business. I sent him the science behind why jets produce a vapor trail and even send him photos of me tucked in formation 10 behind a tanker when a I flew fighters. He still believe there are tanks in the jets with secret chemicals. The logistics and people involved in this theory would be impossible to hide, not to mention if the government wanted to do something like this there are much easier methods, like the tainting the water or food supply. But alas....he believes in Chemtrails still. So we know we will never get the full story from governments, so I look at their actions to clue me into what their true intent is over their words. My small town declared a “State of Emergency”. I live in a vacation town and people are rolling around here on bikes and playing volleyball on the beach like it’s spring break and the Mayor had to do something, NY license plates everywhere, people with second vacation homes or grabbing a VRBO. As of now only residents and critical persons are allowed on the the island (intercoastal island). I smell lawsuits coming in the months ahead as the business here depend on tourist $$. We haven’t had a COVID-19 case in my entire county and many will say them Mayor went to far too early. Business won’t survive a long shutdown, many struggle to make it through the winter months. My final comment: Many of us are able to financially weather this storm. Some cannot. I always told my Marines...”Influence your circle”. This means you have an obligation to assist those around you, that are not able to help themselves due to age, $$, or health reasons, The best way we get through this is help your neighbors, friends and co-workers through this. If you have a coupe in there 80’s maybe you go get their groceries. This is the time to give if you have extra. This is a time to be extra vigilant with regards to people in your neighborhood that don’t belong there. I know there are many foreign members on this forum and this is not slight on them or their counties, I can only speak for the US here. American’s ....hated and loved for many reasons that are many times valid. We have a segment of our population that I despise, watch Jerry Springer and you need not say more. I hate airport terminals because your see people only concerned about themselves there. At the same time we are also a people with incredible spirit here, very giving and generous. People here raise to the challenge, we do well when down , we come together when the odds are against us. It’s in our DNA...I don’t know why. I think we are our best when faced with a crisis. Again please take no offense to the non-American’s. These observations may hold true for you and your home as well, but I cannot speak to them.
  3. Just finished transferring the components from the old dash to the Vintage Dash pad. It was a bit of work, but I took my time and took lots of pics along the way to help me with the reassembly. Overall, I'm very happy with the end result and can't wait to install this back in the car. Will do this once the weather gets a bit warmer. A few thing to note for anyone that's taking this route: Read the treads above for the folks that have installed this already, they provided some great tips that helped with the install. I had to trim the back of the speedo and tach part of the dash, it was way too tight and there was a small lip of dash foam. I trimmed this with an exacto knife, about a couple of mm, and was able to fit the gauges in. This is fully covered by the gauges and not visible. There is a small gap on the top part of the Amp/Fuel gauge. From a sitting angle, this should not be noticeable. There are 21 screws that hold the frame to the dash pad. Some of the metal attachments on the dash pad are covered by foam, you should remove this with a blade before you install the foam. This will allow you to find the holes for the screws when the frame is on. I ended up putting 20 out of the 21 screws from the frame. The one above the cigarette lighter was difficult to attach, was not able to locate this with the frame on. I said screw it, and did not bother with it. There are already 20 screws and its already well fastened. For the hoses, I added some tape to the plastic ends for the small hoses, and some thin weather stripping to the large hoses. This provided a solid seal, the current ones were very loose. Hope this helps and good luck!

Just thought I'd chime in to say thanks to everyone being responsible in practicing social distancing and good hygiene. I am getting Surgery Monday to remove my right lung due to cancer. I have been stressed about his thing exploding and overloading hospitals, but it looks like I will be in and out before things get too bad. Remember that it's the older people and people like me who you are protecting, not just yourself!!
  5. Would you (and your spouse) rather have a 21k-Mile 1971 Datsun 240Z Series I or $310,000? Don’t think too long about the answer! Keith

That's why actually watching those morning briefings is important. You can see the man for what he is. Even biased media reports don't show what you can see by watching, live. It can't be put in to words. He is in way over his head but won't let the pros do their job. We've all known people like that. Many people are getting exposed by this crisis. Some things cannot be B.S.'ed away.

The name "Eisenhower" keeps coming to my mind, but I don't understand why. The Coronavirus daily briefing has been all about border control, so far. Every speaker has to say great things about the President's leadership before they can speak. Now Azar is spinning the facts to say that we've been ahead of the game all along. And he's talking about border control again. Unbelievable, this is incredible. I think that he's going to say that we will be executing all immigrants soon. Bow to the President and introduce the next speaker. Finally, someone is offering real useful information.... These updates are actually good entertainment. Everyone should watch them if they can. He's riffing hard now...the President, that is. Nasty questions... Serious, turn it on, it's happening right now. SEAN SPICER is in the audience to ask a softball question about insider information. I can still see his lime green outfit in my head... It's all media-bashing now. Poor Dr. Fauci. Azar just demonstrated clearly that he does not know what "leadership" means. Buy GM! They'll be making ventilators. Trump says. Pence is defending the President again. Trump is saying that he "inherited' a broken system. But they have rebuilt it, "It's incredible, what it can do. We've done a great job. We haven't been given the credit we deserve." And... that's it, it's over, those were the final words.

I’ll dig through my pile-o-stuff and see if I can find a few obscure parts and get you to guess what they are. Maybe some pictures taken super close up to distort the view.
  9. The bumpers without the rubber trims - or the holes in which to fit them - were not "aftermarket", they were Nissan OEM equipment on S30-S 'Fairlady Z' Standard/ZS and PS30-SB 'Fairlady Z432-R'/PZR Japanese market models from 1969 on.
  10. My thoughts. From, shall we say, my european point of view. It's frustrating to see such a good shell and people asking to cut it up. In this part of the world rust is inevitable because of the intense use of salt (past tense) on the roads in the winter. You could restore a rust bucket, strip it down, sandblast it and replace all the rusted sections. An alternative would be to do the same on a relatively rust free rolling chassis and use the rust bucket for parts. Quite feasable for a 72-73 model 240Z.
  11. You can pull the cable out partially and insert just the end of the cable in to the speedometer. You can even twist it between your thumb and finger and should see the speedo needle move. It will then be disconnected at the transmission end, but the sheath will still be connected. That might work for you, the transmission end might slip in more easily, since it's a different shape. Pull the speedo end out, firmly place it in to the speedo, then screw the end of the sheath down. You might not have to get under the car to mess with the other end at all. I think that you are being too cautious. It's a very simple mechanism. Easy to take apart and put back together. Not as mysterious as it seems.
  12. Thank you for the suggestion. I ended up grabbing the cable at the speedo end with a pair of vice grips and pulled it out about an inch an change. It definitely needed some force. After that I realigned the cable with the speedo and felt a much more significant "drop-in" than previous attempts. Turned the car on and it worked like a charm. Thanks again, super helpful.
  13. Thanks, maybe I got the last one, sort of like the last pack of Chicken Breasts I got from the grocery store today. It was $45 shipped, so it wasn’t cheap that’s for sure. But now I’m confident it should work.
  14. I'm surprised that you found it at all. I wonder if they have 280Z breaker plates.

The entire state of California is now on "Shelter in Place" status by order of the governor. He says that it's unlikely that schools will be reopened this school year. Stores are closed, streets are almost empty, and hoarding mentality abounds. Life imitates art and this is becoming every bad alien virus, zombie apocalypse, government experiment gone bad movie from the last 50 years. Can't wait to see how it ends. Dennis
  18. Yes, someone got a heck of a deal for only $800.00! I just hope that the buyer plans to restore this solid car and not cut it up, that would be a shame if that were to happen.
  19. I was fortunate to come across one of those locally a few years ago. It had been shipped to a local dealer for their parts department but was not a US-spec model so it was unsold for quite a while. A local Z owner bought it for his car but never installed it and it resided in his garage attic for over 20 years - long after his Z was only a memory. I spotted an advert for it and scooped it up. It's now installed on my car.
  20. Dave, great installation notes! I didn’t have an issue with your point number 2. No trimming to make the speedo/tach gauges fit. The fuel/ammeter hole was a bit loose, as you mentioned in number 3. I had the same experience with numbers 4 and 5. I replaced all my hoses when I did my dash installation, and they were snug.

    Page number should be “JFA-20”?
  22. New to me anyway, I know they have been out there and others have them. I also got my spare ECU (after being ticked off about my spare that did not work) off ebay. Already plugged in in an works fine.

There will always be people who respond without reading and thinking first. Many politicians depend on that.

https://www.opensecrets.org/news/2020/03/burr-unloaded-stocks-before-coronavirus/ Never mind. The facts tell their own story.
  25. It would help if the end of yours was rounded a bit like the cable in the lower picture. It would slip in the back of the speedo easier if it were. It's tough getting the proper alignment under the dash with all the crap you have to fight back there. That's likely most of your problem. If your Tach were out It would be much easier, but I'd probably follow the advice given above - remove the other end from the transmission, pull the cable back a bit, hook it up under the dash, and then push the cable (while turning it) back up into the speedo from the transmission end. Reconnect to the trans and you're set.

I stocked up on painting supplies, so if I get stuck at home maybe I can make some real progress on the car Did you know that congress and their staffs are exempt from the insider trading laws?

I watched an interesting documentary about the 1918 (Spanish flu) pandemic last night on TV. The first reported case was at an Army base in Kansas, March 11, 1918, then it crossed the Atlantic to Brest, France with the WWI American troop landings. It became the "Spanish flu" because Spain, being neutral in the war was the first to announce it on May 22, 1918. None of the powers at war, at the time, wanted to let the other side know of their vulnerability due to the flu. That flu, thanks to the war, had a full two months to spread within the troops and into the population before anyone could step in and begin to take preventative measures.

Probably. My point was more about politicians profiting from the plight of the masses. I was being sarcastic. Burr knew so you have to think that many of his colleagues knew. Look at how the efforts to get things started were slow-walked over the last weekend. It's sociopathic, by definition, I think.

  34. @Carl Beck Thanks for the ammo for teasing my wife (the assistant) and the laughs: Nissan recommends speeding and has made provisions for it:
  35. I'm not sure if the ZX has the flats as I have never owned or worked on a S130. The ZX nuts have been used on S30 stub axles for a few decades, so they must work just fine.
  36. I have had excellent results on now 3 sets of seats with interior innovations leather kits. If you use new foam, the fit is very tight on the final closure on the bottom and seat back. I had to trim the foam on the bottom, and add 2" of material on the closure of the seat back. First set is about 3 years now in my daily driver, still look great.
  37. No, but my badges are round and I don't have vented quarters. I guess it might be a 'Series 0.75' or something like that...? ? Never mind. Carry on... ?
  38. Hard to pin down exact change over dates. It seems to me that they like use up the stock on had like the vertical glass even after the changes had been made to the venting. Some side vent cars would then get the early glass until they ran out of stock and switch over to the horizontal glass. Just my opinion of course. The inner hatch vinyl cover would not have the vented centers on them in the later side vented cars. The inner quarter covers would have speaker like holes in the c-pillar vent area as well as the back portion where the actual speaker is.
  39. There were thousands of such cars. I have one in my garage. Isn't all of this just more evidence that the 'Series 1' and 'Series 2' etc vernacular is just too grey around the edges to be reliable? Attempts to subdivide into 'Series 1.5' and 'Series 2.5' etc just make it all look even more rubbery. The BIG difference is solid quarter/vented tailgate type bodyshell vs vented quarter/solid tailgate type bodyshell, and the rest was a moving feast of details depending on production date, target market and sub-variant type.
  40. I agree, it may have been replaced. Here are some photos: @Dr. 240Z is the owner. He bought it in 1971!
  41. Now what to do with the old dash (I have two now, my decent one that came out and a JY pull that was going to be used as a experiment on fixing). For now the decent on is installed on the JY frame and will be stowed in doors. the JY dash will go in the attic for "seasoning"... Maybe one day there will be a use for these, I think this is how hoarding begins...
  42. interesting video on a dash removal. He is doing a complete strip down, hence removed the steering column. Looks like if the wheel was off the dash could be worked out without removing.
  43. Got the dash, I think you guys will be pleased with your dash.
