Hi all, I am the buyer of this Scarab. Pretty sad that my brother had to send me this link Having owned Z cars since 1981, I have always dreamed of owning a Scarab. Figuring I would never see one for sale, I completed an LS1 swap in a 72 Z about 2 months ago. Of course, as soon as I finished mine one came up for sale I had no expectation of buying the car for the $30,000 bid. My buddies and I all thought it would go much higher. I am proud to own it however, and it is one of three nice Z's in my collection. I have the blue LS swap previously mentioned, as well as a white 280 wide body that won best in Z class at JCCS and Nissfest last year. Red, white and blue. We must be in Merica! I am hoping BAT will post a write up on the sale that I submitted this weekend. If they don't, here are a few details. The seller is super cool, and the spare parts and documentation included with the car are awesome. Simple things like the Scarab key fob, Scarab watch and Scarab badging all push my happy buttons! The seller made several changes to the car to improve performance and reliability, but thankfully kept and included all of the original parts. I received the Muncie 4-speed, Scarab bell housing, R-200 diff (need to see if it is LSD. Hoping so!) original radiator and fan shroud, AC system parts, driving lights, Carter carburetor and intake manifold, distributor and original seat covers with the velvet inserts. Most exciting was an entire box full of Scarab magazine articles, owner documentations and receipts for parts. The original owner had the car from 1971-2007/8. I tried to look him up as I would have loved to talk with him about it but he passed away in 2017. I will try and reach out to his kids as they would have grown up with the car. He was a Dr. As with any new purchase, you get to make it your own, so my projects in order of priority to me are; 1. Remove hood scoop and repaint hood 2. Fix paint touch up job on passenger door 3. Rework exhaust to have rectangle tips coming out rectangle body cutout 4. Restore seats to Scarab original to match door panels 5. Reinstall driving lights or similar The 6-speed is nice to have, but unfortunately the center counsel was modified to make the shifter work. I am pretty OCD about stuff like that, so I will have to figure out a way to revise the shifter and get a new counsel or switch to a different transmission. I will be putting both V8 Z's on scales this week. Will be interesting to see the difference between the SBC swap and the LS swap. Will try and post a few "family photos". When I read that I immediatly thought how bold of a statement and wondered how many responses he's received challanging that opinion. After all, the best Z in the country is the one that sits in your driveway, or is running with you behind the wheel, or .... the list goes on and on.

Mr. K would sign anything put in front of him, he was very generous that way. I don't think a Mr. K signature adds to the price yet but maybe. The engine bay mods are desireable but the rest of the interior and exterior mods are only going to bring his price down, it's a very 80's.

Got a set of original Datsun competition/race mirrors for my '73 240Z comp resto. They didn't come with the mounting gaskets which no longer seem to be available. Searched around on the net for some but no luck, seems there were some on EBay a year ago. I think the mirrors were also used on the 280Z Black Pearl and Zap models, as well as being an option for the 240Z and 260Z. Not to worry, drew some up in Solidworks and then 3D printed them in PLA. They fit a treat and look original. Nice little result for a few hours work. Happy to make some more for anyone that needs them, just drop me a message.

~ 35% of the 1969 Z's, with date stamps, are known to exist today (thanks to @Carl Beck's database!!! ) I would guess the percentage increases with each subsequent year.

I did some googling and found this article Exhaust Valve Seat Leakage 971638 A 1.9L four cylinder engine was evaluated for leakage of cylinder charge through the exhaust valve seats. Fast FID HC analyzer traces reveal leakage. Static leakdown tests do not correlate with the Fast FID measurement, unlike previously published reports for a different engine. The causes of exhaust valve seat leakage are likely to be Flakes of cylinder deposits lodging in the valve seat Valve seat distortion due to the thermal and pressure loading of the cylinder head structure Because deposit related effects are very history dependent, it is very difficult to obtain quantitative results. Some experimental observations: Static pressure leakage measurements show variation of leakage area with cylinder pressure, caused by flexing of the valve head. Dynamic leakage results are history dependent. Leakage is reduced after running at high speed/load, and gradually build up during extended light load low speed operation. Valve closing forces can apparently affect leakage Particles of cylinder deposits are present in the exhaust port. These particles have composition similar to cylinder deposits but lower in carbon content and higher in oil ash. Particles were observed having 20-200 micron size. These deposits can lodge in the valve seat and contribute to leakage.

Went by their warehouse this past week in Albany CA. Legit and prototype looks awesome! My dash is out and ready to fit the new one. You can’t beat the price with how good this dash looks compared to an original. I almost bought an original uncracked for about the same cost but I am glad I am going this route so I won’t be so concerned on cracking.

I have MIG welded with a portable generator. Unfortunately, I don't know the specs on either of the welders or the generators that I used. I had used both welders in their respective shops with an adequate power supply, when I hooked them up to generators I immediately had to dial down the heat adjustment on the welders. Other than that, they welded the same as the shop power supply. You could rent a similar generator for the minimum time and try using it with your welder before taking the plunge.

Could you use an air wrench on the damper nut? Like the race engine starters. Might spin you over instead of the engine. Just a thought.

Horns are rebuilt. I used gasket maker instead of the paper seal. Now time to remove all the original tape from the front wiring harness and redo it.

I agree with 26th. I think done reasonably well the car is 50k or so. I would say any sub 2000# cars are considered really early cars. That might even apply to 5000# and below. the first 500# cars are a breed apart and are already in the 90-100k value area.

Don't agree with your numbers and I would value the car at well above $30k. More like $50 - $60k.

Would you happen to have a part number for that?

For me the sad part is that they are Chinese knocks offs of unknown quality and standards.

To clear up space I put a couple racks that hang from the ceiling. You can get them at Lowe’s. I put stuff that doesn’t need to used often up there. Floor space is premium and this helped. What about the concrete on the floor? I hear epoxy isn’t very resistant to fuel and oil. Anyone have any suggestions for a good mechanics floor? I need to do mine but haven’t decided what is the best product to use. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Work has slowed down and since I dont have the cash for a respray I’m doing some of the work myself. Will have it resprayed completely some day. The car was resprayed at some point and the color is not factory. I had a match done but it’s not going to be spot on. The under side of the hood was pretty ratty so I started there. I also water sanded the top side of the hood and it’s looking much better. Also got a few more parts to complete the engine compartment.

Slowly reassembling the engine, just about all parts have made it to me.

The common fix involves reducing the included angle of the two bell crank arms from ~90deg to ~50deg or so. There is a thread on here somewhere about this. Just cut the mounting tube in half, rotate and re-weld. Change length of the upper rod end to match. You could also convert to cable throttle, the best solution in my mind. Depends on whether original look or vastly improved functionality is your goal.
