Do we have any A/C experts in the house? My 77 280 came without A/C and I'm working on adding a system. I've got the interior stuff done and have turned my attention to the stuff in the engine compartment. Has anyone got any experience with using parts from a different vehicle and adapting them to the Z? I'm assuming the technology and compressor designs for the newer stuff (designed for R134) is better than the stuff from forty years ago. Newer, lighter, more efficient, cheaper? I could "relatively easily" fab up a mounting bracket to mount a different compressor where the stock one goes. Use a ubiquitous compressor from a Maxima, Civic, or Corolla instead of t…

Well as anyone knows that lives in a hot climate the 240 air blows. Well actually it sucks and that's the problem. The blower motor sucking through the evaporator is not a very good arrangement. After doing a bit of research I opted to go with the Vintage Air unit. The tipping point for me was the fact that they use servo motors to control the flaps and this will work out better for me in the future. After you get rid of all of the old heater and ac unit there is a ton of room back there. The first picture is of my old unit which this being a Z car forum you all have seen before. This is the GEN II Mini with the brackets I fabbed up for mounting. With this bracket a…

Hi everyone, I’m really wanting to add a/c to my stock 77 280z. Unfortunately the car did not come with it so I’m looking into what my options are for adding it. I can’t find any reviews of people that have added it so I’m not sure where to start. Any advice from anyone that has done this would be very helpful! Thanks y’all!! Hi all, My AC system is stock or at least what I been told. Always use R12 and haven't converted to R134 yet. The fitments on the compressor still R12. Not like the R134a where one is bigger than the other and sometime caps color coded. I read online, forums, including this one and seem like people stating that R134a can be run on R12 system provided flush all refrigerant, new fitments, run not as cool as R12, high pressure.... Knowing R12 is no longer available or at least at authorized AC shop. The dilemma I have is that I'd like to keep the car as stock as possible. Which lead to parts hard to find and sometime impossible. Seem like there is a…

A good buddy @chaseincats put me onto this upgrade last year, he originally found it over on HybridZ. The replacement motor and fan comes from one of our favorite donor cars - a '99 Kia Sportage. He pulled one from a salvage car and installed it into his 280Z. Yes, the housing needs a 1/16th trim all around the opening but that is the only mod. His electrical plug was a direct fit. For my 240Z, the OE motor is hardwired with a spade and bullet fitting. Another buddy recently did the same upgrade for his '72 resto project and he put together a jumper for me with the correct plug for the motor and the spade and bullet for my harness. Grinding out the housing with eve…

Hi All, I have been recently diagnosed with bad allergies that keep me indoors during the summer heat and humidity. To the point of I'm nearly going to pass out. This is a real bummer for a fun living Z car driver, without air conditioning. I have been given an increase of my social security with the passing of my husband. Both bad and good news. This has enabled me to have some extra $ for things needed on my lovely 1976 Z, RedBird. I am asking you all, just what is involved with getting her non-working AC, or needing to be totally replaced AC, in her working? How do I find someone that is skilled with Z's to do the work? What do I need to know before s…

Greeting folks Not sure if this belong to Heat & AC or Engine & powertrain ... Here goes My radiator was serviced couple of months ago due to some minor leak at the top of the radiator. The shop need to open up the entire top cover of the radiator to do a fix... They recommended to flush, and remove all of the build up over the year. The fee for the job is about the same if I were to buy the new aluminum 3 rows radiator. However, I like the stock looking and it also 3 rows radiator, so I agree with the job. This is couple of months back before the summer. All seem to be working well. Recently, I notice the fan clutch engaged too fre…

This forum has been very helpful to me. As a means of documenting some of what we have done and to help others avoid some of my mistakes I thought I would post the installation of a vintage gen II mini AC system. Background: My son and I are restoring a 1973 240z. We call it the bucket, as there was a significant amount of rust that had to be dealt with and our other choice – Money Pit was already taken. We are changing the color from 113 avocado green to mango orange, it has an L-28 engine and a 5 speed gear box. At this point: the car was taken to bare metal, metal replaced where required and any rust has been eliminated the …

My 78 is getting too hot. I've done a few things to it since it was on the road, so keep in mind that I'm unable to drive it right now, only idle it when backed out of my basement garage. Here's what's been done to it since I drove it a few years ago that relate to the cooling system: -Deleted the coolant bypass line just to tidy up the engine bay. I plugged the thermostat housing and plugged the small coolant line that comes off the heater hose hard line by the #1 spark plug. -Tested the 180* thermostat in boiling water and drilled out the tiny bypass hole in the thermostat just a wee bit after reading about others who had bypassed the coolant line at…

Hi... I bought one of the kits for installing an Air Conditioner in my 1976 280Z, from Air Parts in Texas. They said it would have "every item needed to install it", included in the box. Unfortunately, now that it is installed, it apparently is the wrong item, as It does not fit correctly! They are willing to pay the return shipping, and give a full refund. We are looking for a different unit, now as we have to remove this one. So I am asking if anyone has had success placing an AC into a 1976 280 Z??? Including the radio in it's correct spot. If you have, please tell me what brand and model unit you have used. And any other specifics you might know …

My car came without A/C and I'm working on adding it. I had originally planned to use my manual control head to run the system, but this does not work. The manual cable driven control heads are completely incompatible with the A/C evaporator box as they both want to occupy the same space. I had to swap over to a control head designed for A/C. That itself is not a big deal. What IS a big deal is that the A/C control heads are vacuum driven instead of cable driven and I really really didn't want to plumb my car with all those vacuum lines. Check valves, that white tank in the engine compartment, solenoid valves, rats nest of vacuum tubing under the dash... I really, re…

I am sorry, I know I am adding yet another A/C thread. I did a search on the topic, but I need additional advice. I would like to add A/C to my 73 240Z. I am leaning more towards the "factory" kit because it is made for the car. Courtesey nissan no longer has the factory kits available. Has anyone had any experience with the classic or vintage air kits. I know I need to go with a modern Sanden type compressor. I have also read that the Honda blower motor is a good upgrade for increased air flow. Does anyone have any thoughts or guidence?
