Carburetor Conundrum (260Z)
Hi DadandladZ, I'm surprised that no one told you, you can download the service manual for your car here on the site.. Only now you have the round top carbs you have to download the 240z (and the 260z for the rest of the car/inlet manifold?) serv.manual. In there you can find the procedure how to set these carbs in the right way. I have'nt read it all but i think you have the wrong inlet manifold and stuff on your car.. also look for leaks because that causes high rev's as you probably already know... good luck!

Oversize Pistons
Yep... that's were i totally agree.. About the marking of a flywheel... i Neverrrr marked a flywheel or clutch assembly on a Datsun.. I'm almost sure never have read this in ANY servicemanual of the Nissan datsuns i repaired.. and i have all the serv.man. of my cars, i don't work on any car without a service manual.. something i really really!!! advice anybody to do because your doomed to get things wrong. Haha.. makes me think of this: like the guy VINNY from american shopper once said: I CAN NOT EMPHASIZE HOW MUCH YOU CAN NOT DO THAT! (He was using a acetylene burner IN a harley block to get rid of a bolt..or something like that! hahaha)

Oversize Pistons
I'm NO engine builder but i think that's tipical american (engines) way to think.. Japanese engines are balanced per part i think? The inner parts are balanced maybe together i don't know but the flywheel/clutch is balanced separatly for as far i know on these japanese engines? Maybe im wrong, i never had to repair a underblock of these engines.. (I also ask myself how a machine would look like that could make a balance in a engine when it's all bolted together? I have heard of balancing the cranck and the connecting rods and pistons are weighed, but no flywheel as it is balanced on it's own..)

We have in the Netherlands 4 ft 8 1/2 inches or as we say: 1435 mm. This is the most used all over the world and i think you meand this as well? In dutch.. (Interesting .. there are many width's in tracks.. (the old russian is also meantioned.. i heard that the Ukraine had those and that's why they can't send weed over to polen because of the width of the tracks that are different .. ) Lijst van spoorwijdten - Wikipedia

Yes.. My socket sets are 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch drive! (I don't have any inches sockets, as i'm always and only working on Japanese cars i don't need them (except for some sensors or so..) if i find a screw/bolt that has a inches size... i throw them... in the bin!! Overhere in europe we have still a lot of things that are in inches, tubular steel for example (although more and more are in mm like the warm and cold copper pipe.. (12mm cold, 15mm warm water) And a 2 by 4 in woodwork is also known but often is given in centimeters (5x10 cm.) 1/1000 of a inch that's a low tolerance for rivets. I think i told this before but i've worked with Studer ReVox equipment, it's studio (sound) equipment from the top shelf.. I've seen parts that were made to a tolerance of 1/1000 of a millimeter. (!) The capstanshaft (that gives a tape the perfect playing speed) is made on 1/1000 mm exact and then they lay them for about a year in a warehouse and after that it land's on a (Don't have/found the correct word) measurement-bench ?? to see if it's within the dimensions it should have, if not.. it's scrap! Hahaha, that must be confusing!! everything but the oven.. reminds me of the (southern) indian guy in: Oh Mother what is it HOT! (Tell this in a Indian way of english in your mind haha ) We are going to make a curry.. so you have to bake your curry for 2 hours at onehundred and eighty degrees.. (Yes Celsius!) OR if your not in such hurry with your curry.. you cán cook it for 180 hours at 2 degrees!! It was SO funny, especially with the way he turnes his head constantly in theire special way, while saying that! I'm not only learning to write english i also get a lot of nollidge ?? huh? oh.. knowledge (why not write what you hear? haha) of how the american world works.. (or does not work hihi..) Oh well.. If you look in the past we had also totally crazy length and content/capacity measurements like EL.. (Elbowslength?) or Mut (often used with coals (for your heater or in a steamengine haha) got an old almanac from 1948 or so and there are many i never heard of.. Very interesting guys!! Mart

Trunk monkey noticed one rear strut moving... Source of noise?
Maybe you could take the strut apart.. normally the threaded rod should fit perfectly in the hole from the top plate of the shockabsorber assembly, maybe it's wearied away from all the movement.. Be careful with the spring tension, use a good tool for that. do take it apart in a safe environment.

280Z Steering Wheel
I would be very careful, i ask myself if that wheel inner part is even weldable.. I would use some 2 component glue for steel and/or make an adaptor and glue it together. That hornpad is just sitting there, does not need to be very strong. btw.. think that the inner part is aluminum? Many sorts of alu and variation in welding does not make it simple. Mart

Nice story! 👍 The above.. i find that funny, 5/8 inches.. It's in metric so simple, M14 is 14mm drill M6 is 6mm drill, that's metric! 😉 Oh and i guess that 40 is 40F not 40Celsius? 😁 A Datsun not finishing would be NO option! So well done!

Dead spot in steering, where to look?
So i think that you should test it in the middle and at the ends, if there is no movement on the ends there is no need to make it tighter, if you have slop also at the ends it means there is room for readjustment. (because there is always more slop in the middle due to use.) Never had to do this myself.. I always tell people NEVER EVER turn the wheels when they are not rolling!!! It distroys the steering rack, ALWAYS turn the steeringwheel when the car is rolling, i think that's very important! (This even is more important with wide tires!) ( I often see people that ... don't understand anything of friction ... drive of backwards of my driveway, turn the wheels while standing still AAARRGGHHH!!! and drive off.... grrr... 99% of those people don't understand anything of the way things work.. 🙈 )

So guys, what is your most valuable selfmade part? I once made a steel construction for in between the 300zxtt balancer and the undercarriage (my translator says stabilizerbar) , a service part i invented myself hihi.. normally you have to take off the starter to service the belt in the engine. With my tool you don't have to and that saves A LOT of time and hassle! If someone is interested i can make a pic of it and put it here. (Don't have one made yet..ever..) The part i made hooks into the balancer holes (twice) and fits against the stabilizerbar under the car.

And.. Jeff, did you manage to let them work together? I like the smaller 240z hub also more than that big 280z hub.. It's also a good warning for the rest of us.. look first if the steeringwheel fits on the axle (yours did..) but the button in the middle is not interchangeble..

In the '80's overhere you could buy anti theft equipment that used a keylock that you could put on the car somewhere and this is what you see here i think.

Yeah, i had that with a 240z, after alignment it steared MUCH MUCH easier! Just go with a car that is mechanically sound because otherwise you throw away your money. No alignment can be done to a car that has a lot of worn parts in the suspension and steering!

I would never tinker around that ON the car, it can be very dangerous i think.. Only off the car and best to let someone with a lot experience do that. Because it's possible something get broken as it get warmer and you lose steering..😮 I think a good wheel alignment shop can solve these problems, even if you have a different set of shocks/springs/wheels (My shop did my car and it still tended to go a little bit to the right.. they said it's the tires that do this, the machines they used says it's straight as an arrow.. but we will see when i need new tires. The solution was.. they said: just change left front with right front wheel and look if it's over or steering to the left.. still not done this.. it's so small and.... seems to get even smaller every time i drive it..) Different tires, brands or sizes (with different threadpaterns) are illegal in our country on one and the same axel, but that's not your problem i assume?

lost all power ignition 240z
Have you done also the Plus-pole connection? it looks like it's going to get the same problem.. Why all the tape? leave it off then you'll see the corrosion and you can spray the connection while doing a bit of maintenance! I bet you leave it.. untill one day .... the car stalls..

Science!/Not science! Unsticking stuck parts
I would be a bit scared to do that.. (use vinegar on aluminium..) I got a old L24 that needs some restore work but i prefer to just use some WD40 and let that first soak for a week or so.. (I'm in no hurry, hurry is wrong with these kind of things!)

1975 Datsun 280Z fuel gauge sending unit, how to change ?
Hi, Did you have a look in the service manual? If it has a sending unit like a 240z it's on the frontside of the tank iirc.. and if it's like in a 280zx it's on top.. and can be accessed from the boot.. iirc.. 😉 So no need to drop the tank! btw.. pic's tell a lot more, i like to see the different sending units.. i know the 280zx one and find it interesting to see if a 280z has a different one.. (Ofcourse it's different why make it easy when you can make it complicated hey NISSAN?? pffff... )
