  1. It does my heart good to see your original " grapefruit" alternator. My old eyes can't tell from the photo-----what color is the band around your alternator? Is it a deep burgandy-ish red?

    And military intelligence.
  3. Leaning on the fender is a no go.. i was thinking of making a C-shape steel construction that go's over the fender (standing on the ground behind the front wheel.) with some lining (inside the C shape) to not scratch the fenders.. when working on a z or zx i do not use a fender cloth, when it's covered you tend to lean on it.. and throw lots of tools on them, i use a toolcart for that.
  4. its normal to run well or better with that sort of ignition advance at idle. I run 24° advance at idle during warm up to keep the revs up. The cam timing isn't really involved in how much ignition advance the engine wants. it might be involved in running like crap, but I'd ignore the cam until you've confirm the things the guys have mentioned. 1. confirm the engine really is at TDC when the pointer/pulley say TDC 2. check the vacuum advance works 3. check mechanical advance works 4. check what 'all in' ignition timing you have with a timing light (and no vacuum advance)
  5. I was looking for wiper blades for the 510 this morning and stumbled upon these guys, http://datnissparts.com/ Kind of embarrassed to say I have never heard of them, they cover most of the Datsun line up and there prices are competitive, anyone ever ordered from them?
  6. They have a filter and desiccant and are generally designed to trap stuff you want to keep away from the expansion valve and the compressor. In the stock system, there's also a fine screen in the liquid line fitting at the bulkhead - just ahead of the expansion valve - as a second line of defense. And YUP "Cruzzar", the early A/C systems only had a high pressure switch. Low pressure switches didn't come until the ZX's. The FSM does create some confusion by calling it merely a "Pressure Switch" (without specifying if the switch is "cut" on overly high pressure OR at low pressure).

My wife and I have decided that international travel is out until at least next year; vaccination rates outside the US are quite problematic. Of course, there are plenty of interesting and beautiful places to explore inside the US.
  8. Oh, then forget about what I said about coming down off load to idle. That's not it. You had mentioned earlier that you thought it would be ignition related since it didn't stumble before it shut off. In my experience, there isn't any significant stumbling when the fuel pump shuts off. It just dies. So how about this (since you have a 78)... Your oil pressure drooped enough in your hot idling engine and opened up the fuel pump switch and shut off the fuel pump? Or the "L" terminal on your alternator is acting up at low RPM's. That could also shut off the fuel pump.
  9. My experience was really good until the last year as I described above. Was able to get a genuine Datsun rebuilt starter for myself and passed the source on to motorman7 for the restoration he was doing on Bob Russell's 73 240z. That said, I am not optimistic about the situation getting better. I know good friends of Riley that told me they have tried to get in touch with him with no success. They are at a complete loss as to what has happened.

Here in Fort Collins CO most businesses have dropped mask requirements. However, this county has one of the highest vaccination rates in the state. Last week I was in lovely Asheville, NC (what a gorgeous area, next to the Great Smoky Mt. National Park) and I would guess that about one-third of the businesses, especially the smaller businesses, required masks to enter. I do note that NC has about a statewide 42% vaccination rate and CO is about 52%, although my county is higher. So my guess is that many business owners, especially small businesses, are keeping an eye on vaccination rates and making decisions about masks based on behavior in their local area.
  11. S30Driver, thanks for the links to drier and pressure switch. I have seen this drier on a Utube video. Question: on the second link (for the pressure switch) shouldn't the pressure switch be a high pressure switch not a low pressure switch as what was originally installed ?
  12. It is kind of burgandy-ish. I've always called it reddish brown.
  13. Yes. Riley at Lynchburg Nissan is/was a great source when you can get a reply. Some time back things started going south in communications with him/them. No idea what is going on, but haven't been able to place an order and get any response for quite some time (over a year) now. What a shame---good prices and many items that could not be found anywhere else. Hope it changes for the better.
  14. The clevis was purchased separately, as I used a factory lifting bracket the clevis worked better than the L bracket on the leveler. Funny thing, I checked first I checked Canadian Tire and they only had Chinese non rated clevis's, the one I selected is from a local industrial supply store, it is a 3/8" VGD "gold pin" anchor shackle with a 1 ton WLL and it was cheaper than the CDN Tire import. At the rear I actually used the rear intake mounting hole that uses an M8 capscrew. I used a shorter screw plus, a 14mm OD x 8.5mm ID sleeve in the hole of the lifting bracket on the leveler.
  15. Looks like it was on the bottom of a lake...pfff... for years.. Hey Shawn.... When your car works again you have to send Zed a big whipped cream cake! 🙊

I bet that makes you feel better. The honor system? Oxymoron like model prisoner.
  18. You could also unplug them, one by one, and see what stops working.
  19. Successful event yesterday pulling the engine, without removing the hood. It only took about 15 minutes to lift it out and mount on my engine stand. Thanks to my friend, Dave. I did spend a good part of the day before doing the rigging and taking measurements to make sure I wouldn't need to remove the hood. Getting very close to sending the shell to my body guy Jody.
  20. I would start by watching for the situation to occur again and try to get a feel for what's going on. I think all this poking around with the ECU as a culprit is premature. My car would sometimes shut off when I pulled up to a stop. Engines don't like a rapid drop from load to idle. It's just unstable. Modern engines running a fast control loop use technology and speed of response to take care of it, but back in the old days, it was never uncommon to pull up to a stop sign and sometimes have your car stall. If your car was tuned properly and running good, it was "rare", but it did happen. I think mine was caused by a rich fuel mixture, a BCDD that was disabled, and an idle that was set a few RPM lower than spec.
  21. When you say "run" do you mean idling, or cruising, or getting on it? And, define "crap". Carbs, EFI, engine details will help also. Not much to go on. If cam timing is on the money then stretched chain is not likely. The chain determines cam timing.

Gents, I need to request that we keep this thread moving about COVID statistics and information. It's not a bashing session. Remember there are people who cannot take the vaccine due to medical or religious reasons and I do not want our platform to be a place where they do not feel welcome. Thanks guys. Mike
  23. The guards / supports have been sourced, awaiting shipment. Will close advert when they arrive. Thanks to all that responded.
  24. Not Z related, but I ran a pair of SpinTech mufflers on my old 66 GT-350. It was the only time I was ticketed for excessive noise by the police in Sacramento! Subsequently changed to FlowMasters. They did sound awesome though.
