  1. My guess is that it was put there to serve as a means of dampening excessive vibration and/or part of the collapsible steering wheel assembly for US crash safety requirement of the period.
  2. VTO, a Classiczcar website sponsor, offers a nice version.
  3. I believe you are about an hour away from Austin. Correct? That said, I would suggest contacting the Capital Z Club and find out where they are having their next membership meeting or event. Introduce yourself and express you interest in Z car and that you would like some advice. Many members have a wealth of knowledge and experience that they are willing to share. In fact, your networking skills may result in an offer to inspect a car with you. Better yet, a club member may know of someone who might be wanting to sell their car. Moreover, members have lots of situational awareness of what is out there in the area and may advise you about some sketchy car up for sale. What strikes me odd about the car you pictured is the fact that it has a performance-oriented triple set up with an MSD ignition, yet it's running an AC compressor and air pump parasitically robbing horsepower.
  4. I suggest using a heat gun to soften the rubber housing enough to force it back in. While you have access to the choke cable itself, might as well replace the steel wire itself. Here's the step-by-step process: https://woodworkerb.com/home/datsun-240z-rebuild/repair-choke-cable/
  5. I have a full set dated 12/71 with brand new tires in SoCal.
  6. Bring a Trailer has taught the pedestrian novice that a green 240Z is worth upwards of $300,000, regardless of condition 😊
  7. In addition to the above stated, Hagerty Insurance valuation guide is a good reference. I also suggest this as well: https://zcarguide.com/datsun-240z-pricing-guide/
  8. I had a black set of black plug wires, but switched to NGK blues after hours of going down a trouble shooting rabbit thinking I had a fuel delivery/carburetor issue. For me, function and reliability is more important than aesthetics.
  9. I've sold many Z cars over the years. This one will probably change hands at my estate sale 😊
  10. Sorry to hear that ZCCC has been taken over by a few clowns. It was a good club back in the early 90's when this photo was taken.
  11. Since your profile says you're up in Fort Collins, have you reached out to https://www.zccc.org ? It was one of the best clubs with the most helpful members I was fortunate to be a part of when I lived in Denver years ago.
  12. Should bring strong money. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1973-datsun-240z-152/
  13. Welcome to the group! I salute you for taking on such an extensive restoration on a 280Z. It is a bit disheartening that so much was paid for a vehicle, to hadve it shipped across the ocean only to discover such shoddy collision and rust repair work was performed on it. Hopefully the seller was totally upfront with you on the true condition of the vehicle during the sales transaction. That said, the car is now in good hands, and will be given a better life. Looking forward to seeing pictures of the rebirth 😊
  14. That's a lot of time and money spent to make a C-5 Corvette.
  15. Merry Christmas to all!! A small stocking-stuffer from my bride of over 30 years. She knows me too well ☺️
  16. I removed most of my coolant plumbing, SMOG equipment, and installed a euro balance tube to tidy up the engine bay. Since the car is a fair weather plaything, it doesn't need to be setup for temperature extremes.
  17. Not sure what if any value this bestows on your vehicle other than the equivalent of a participation trophy.
  18. That 507 would look perfect parked inside my custom gargage next to my 300SL Gullwing currently being polished by Scarlet Johansen wearing a string bikini 😆
  19. Maybe it's the angle or the gasket...but the carburetor spacer look like it's sagging a little in the middle. Hopefully it isn't cracked.
  20. You should have used the ribbed version with the reservoir tip 👌
  21. One of my quarantine projects was to clean out my files of old documents. While sorting through some old car receipts, I stumbled across an invoice from December of 2003 for a complete NOS exhaust system purchased from Courtesy Nissan. With a $70.00 freight charge, the whole system set me back $297.48. Given what a NOS exhaust system would run for today, I should have bought a couple more and sat on them 😉 I recently saw a Datsun 240Z used parts ad for a pair of used Koito headlights with an asking price of $300.00, which got me to thinking: Anyone else have old receipts or recall the prices for parts that today would require the sacrificing of a kidney to own?
  22. I ordered a set of carburetor parts from Bruce today. Great, friendly service. Business must be good since the current turnaround time for rebuilds is March of 2021.
  23. I concur. The current Proto front end looks like the designers just gave up on it. I'm sure the aftermarket will have a lot of front end options to choose from when the final version comes out.
