  1. This discussion might fit better in a different thread. Not the BAT one..
  2. You can start your own new thread and link to the various posts here. You have that power. Frankly, I'm starting to feel embarassed for you guys. The "Flat-Earth Society" insult is an obvious sign that the discussion has degraded. There are no winners when things get this bad. Why not just stop posting? At least if you start a new thread we can all use the Ignore function of the forum so we don't have to see it.
  3. To clarify - I appreciate Carl's rational on-point posts. You know who he is, he describes his history, and replies with the facts as he understands them. He has contributed to the Z car world with his web site and his respectful participation in conversations on the various forums. He makes a new person want to "join the club". I don't really know who HS30 is. Apparently his name is Alan (or Allan). He seems to have a small circle of people who respect his opinion but does not give much reason for anyone new to the field to do the same. He seems to assume that people should already know who he is. Can't really tell why his words should mean anything. He's just a loud voice on the forum. He makes a new person wonder "do I really want to be a part of this?". Carl adds, HS30 subtracts. I appreciate Carl's efforts but sometimes it's best to move on to more productive endeavors.

  5. Slow going today. I had to start hanging tools & moving chemicals, I just had no floor space to move around in. I wanted to get the press moved into the main floor, and I did eventually, however I had to juggle a whole bunch of crap to make the space, just to be able to maneuver it. I got side tracked figuring out the storage bin ideas for all the small stuff current dispersed in individual plastic trays in multiple locations. I bought 2 containers to try - and decided that instead of wasting shelf space it made more sense to suspend them on the West wall, where I was vacillating on adding additional shelves in line with the ones I already added. The conundrum for me was that the shelves would not be the same height on either side of the window, and that would bug the crap out of me DTR. Put a bunch of M3, M4, M5 & M6 riv-nuts, and screws of different types (counter sunk, pan head Phillips and Allen in rows from L-R. That calmed me down a bit 🤪 I've ordered another matching pair to put on the other side of the window. I will make sure the spacing and offset matches 😁 Chemicals and tools I had moved earlier in the day. Probably not their final testing place. These were all hanging on nails in the old West wall, along with about 15 pairs of pliers that I need to find the correct pegboard holder for. Many of these hangers are too long - it was cheaper to buy 100 6" than 3". I'll just cut down the ones that need to be shorter. Finally clearing the shelves where the press needs to go Cut the shelving, cleaned up the area, moved & levelled the press After that I wrapped up with top coat on the west & north wall of the area Feeling better now about how the day went by.
  6. Some how I have manged to misplace the rad fan, I've looked everywhere 4-5 times, no luck. How do I loose something that big? Fortunately a friend has a spare he's willing to sell me, my fault my dime. Exhaust manifold and carbs are on, as soon as that wheel bearing shows up I can get the car down and start working on the windshield and hatch.
  7. Perhaps we could all agree to disagree on the subject of the Z series question. Knowing that there were improvements throughout the model years I will continue to describe the difference between Series I and II 240 Z as the hatch vents move to the C-pillars. I believe that was all it was meant to describe (in the USA) originally.
  8. As to a great change or reversal of beliefs, I have to say no. Having spent the better part of 30 years working in the Engineering Design environment of large corp. structures, Mr. Uemura’s story made me feel right at home. I see both Mr. Uemura and his team, as well as Mr. Matsuo and his team in quite a different light than the one you portray. Much more along the lines of the actual work environment; - Take Management Direction, Salute, and Execute. Design A New and More Modern Sports Car For Nissan To Sell. From Mr. Uemura’s story, I see the engineering development team excited and happy to play a part in the development of A New Sports Car that would be put into production. The only conceivable “family” of variants I could think of were created by the Domestic and Export Sales Departments. They had more to do with the definition and range of models, with standard & optional equipment that would comprise the Model Line at the Dealerships. Some quotes from Chapters 2 - Before Development of the Datsun 240Z & 3 - Development of The Datsun 240Z. "At that time, the Styling Section, looking for a design for the new sports car, started preparing for developing the new sports car by building some clay models, including both open and closed models of two-seater cars. The executives, however, did not immediately give their approval for developing the new sports car. Then-president Katsuji Kawamata had a consistent belief: “A sports car is not for making profits but to act as a showcase for our company.” I think that he thought the company did not have to take this sort of risk, because Nissan already had two sports car models: the Datsun Sports and the Silvia. On the other hand, there was a strong desire for a new model in the US market, the Datsun Sports’ main market. This was due to the large number of complaints regarding the existing Datsun Sports, which we were asked to eliminate by bringing out a new model. In Chapter 3 - Development of the Datsun 240Z for example: Mr. Uemura writes "In April 1967, Hajime Suitsu, the Chief Engineer, held a talk with the leaders of the Engineering Department who controlled the production, and they came up with the development course of the new sports car, as follows: a) Development shall be completed in time for shipment in August 1969. b) The retail price in North America shall be 2,546 dollars. c) The car shall be profitable in North America. d) The initial cost shall be estimated on the assumption that 1,000 units will be produced in a month and the cost will be amortized over two years. e) The capacities of the facility shall be 2,000 units per month. f) The base model shall be equipped with a 1600 cc four-cylinder engine. g) As a high-performance specification model, a vehicle equipped with a 2000 cc six-cylinder engine shall be added. h) The new model shall be produced by Nissan Shatai, as with the current Datsun Sports. While the Domestic Sales Department desired a performance car that could compete with the Toyota 2000GT in terms of performance, this set out the basic policy that a profitable new model mainly targeted for the North America market, rather than for hardcore car fans, would be developed. On June 8, 1967, the first liaison meeting for the next-generation sports car was held. A total of about 20 people from the design sections and the modeling, trial production, testing, body and outfitting departments, as well as those from Nissan Shatai who were in charge of development and production were called in for this meeting. They were given the fundamental plan by Suitsu, and the specifications and the layout chart were distributed. In this meeting, he spoke to them, saying, “We will develop three types for this model: a two-seater coupe, a two-seater convertible, and a 2+2 coupe, and give first priority to the two-seater coupe. We would like to make an unconventional car that leads the sports car market by aiming at a top speed of at least 124 mph (200 km).” This served as the formal kick-off in the Design Department. The model was developed following a rigid schedule. For example, the drawings of bulky parts (cast, forged, and stamped parts) had to be released by the end of July, and the first prototype vehicle be completed by the end of November. Suitsu gave us a pep talk, saying, “If it’s difficult to meet a deadline, don’t struggle with it alone. Talk with me and we will hammer out ways to deal with it.” - end quotes - - - The Book was priced at a very low price point - so every enthusiast could easily afford to enjoy it. https://www.lulu.com/search?page=1&q=Datsun+240Z&pageSize=10&adult_audience_rating=00
  9. Does the fan include the fan clutch? I'm 90% sure my fan clutch wasn't working. The fan always ran. I'm not sure what temperature the clutch should engage at, but mine always ran (after I got the engine running again in 2020). Regardless, I'm happy to cover the cost of a new fan! Don't you need the weatherstrip kit before you do the windshield and hatch? That's the part that's currently holding up the MSA order. It's apparently going to arrive "any day", just like it was at Datsun Garage (I'm not comparing the two suppliers - the experience working with the two is night and day). I think the problem must be with the supplier of the kit, as they're the ones giving out unrealistic delivery dates to their dealers. Have I mentioned how great it all looks? I'm hoping to be able to drop in next Thursday afternoon for the first time since you painted the car!
  10. Condensers (aka capacitors) for electrical noise reduction (alternator) and protect points & electrical noise reduction (ignition). Unless you're using a stock radio or similar vintage, you don't need them.
  11. I sent him a message last night with your info above copied in to it. He replied "Thanks! I'll get in touch."
  12. I'm going to downshift to 2nd here - heel and toe of course. I was taught, by employees of Datsun US and several parts mgrs, to refer to all MODELS of their products by the production date. Vins only came into play in a VERY FEW ISOLATED cases. When I get a call from a Z owner who starts the conversation by calling his baby a Series 1.75 I cut him or her off and ask for the PD, just as I was taught by the persons already mentioned.
  13. I agree. This is becoming about as interesting as a diatribe on who invented the potato peeler 🙄
  14. I agree. I think thread-drift is almost inevitable and when a digression becomes big enough it can be worth splitting it off into its own thread. How about it @Mike?
  15. "Black Pearl"! https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1978-datsun-280z-162/
  16. Thanks everyone. Dutchzcarguy- I have found my old eyes do well with apple phone photos enlarged on the screen. I am going to try to get under it this Sunday. I bought a new speedo cable from Z car depot and a new Pinion, had to get a 17 tooth, the 16 seems to be on the endangered list. I believe the extra tooth will lower by about 5 miles , I have different wheel so the speedo was oof between 5 and 8ish MPH anyway. Patcon- Since I am going to just start replacing stuff I will start the removal of the speedo cable at the speedo and see if it is spinning. I hope this works I liked having a speedo! Hopefully it has a happy ending- I will update ...thanks
  17. Got back few parts nickle planted. Pivots work pretty smoothly. I got an old one from ebay as well so I have an extra wiper linkage with pivot arm assembly. Will be putting on ebay once it is assembled. Let me know if anyone is interested. Also decided to nickle plate my water cork assembly.
  18. @Zed Head You likely just saved the day. I can't thank you enough. Beats ebay vendors any day, I don't think MegaZip will find the gears, and the plus is he is located in Arizona. Waiting for my hybridZ account to be verified.
  19. Just saw this on Hybridz. More expensive than a wrecking yard but cheaper than some places. Has the ratio, apparently. https://forums.hybridz.org/topic/133338-r200-370-open-and-z32-5-speed/#comment-1241777
  20. The name's 'HS30-H', not 'HS30'. Pretty much everything else in your post is in your head, and you'll have to take responsibility for that yourself.
