Cody's Goon
5 pointsSo I should've taken pictures first!! Sometimes I get "tunnel vision"... The lower windshield trim on Cody's car was bashed in about 8" or 9" wide right in the middle of the windshield. It was so caved it it was concave instead of convex. So I had reached out to the forum to source this trim. @Terrapin Zhad responded with a good source for it, but we may have a lead on a parts car and I hate the idea of buying a new set of trim and then ending up with a parts car on top of that! So I figured I didn't have anything to lose by trying to straighten what I had... So off to YouTube All the videos on YouTube are pretty much dealing with vintage American cars. The trim on these cars is so much thicker and heavier than our Datsun trim. I wasn't really very hopeful.. So out came the tools So an assortment of punches, a body hammer and a flat file. A finer file would have been a plus. So I started dollying the dents out of the back of the trim. The main tool I used was the brass punch that I shaved the edges off of. I used it from the back of the trim on a piece of leather and chucked up into the vise as an anvil. I made pretty good progress but could get the convex shape back in the trim. So I shaped a little diviot in a 1x4 and used that as a buck and dollied the trim against the divot with the brass punch. Lot's of little light strikes, hundreds... So at this point the shape is pretty close but not smooth. So here comes the file. Now our trim is super thin! So you are very limited on how much filing you can do. If you cut through it, the trim is pretty much ruined. I filed till it was pretty smooth and then I used a sharpie to mark the backside of the spots that needed more work. Then a little more filing. Then I started sanding the front to try to get rid of the filing marks. A finer file would have made this easier. I used the end of the 1x4 to rest the trim on while sanding. I had to have a helper hold the trim while I sanded and you have to use a good bit of pressure because the trim is really hard. So then I buffed it a low speed with a first and second cut You have to be really careful buffing this stuff, because the buffer will take it away from you in a heartbeat. So I was really pleased with the results. There are still some file scratches in the piece that I could probably remove with more sanding work but they are only visible if you get really close. So I buffed it at low speed with a first and second buff. It's hard to see the flaws in the trim with the cell phone camera but it is very presentable Here is the damaged area from the back, and yes it is that rough and a pristine rear section Overall really pleased!! Once it's in the weatherstrip, only about half of it shows so it should serve the purpose for now and we can keep moving forward5 points

Bumper Fitment
3 pointsSorry for the late follow-up here. Been working on house projects for the last few months and today is the first time in a while I've been able to devote some time to it. It actually only took me about 15 minutes to fix. Undid the passenger side, centered the bumper, secured the middle and then cinched the ends down, no problem. Thanks for the help guys.3 points

2 pointsThanks! I'm aware of the left-right distinction, but for clarity in this particular situation, given that all the work was done outside the car and facing the nose, I used left-right designations as observed. Re:the rubber plugs, I'd rather have a couple of chromed "buttons" in those holes. I honestly should have had the rechromer weld them up when he was repairing the rust and rechroming...2 points

Carpenter bee traps
2 pointsOne of my Z friends around here lives in a log cabin home. He has quite a battle on his hands with those bastards. It's easy to make the traps, Charles. You probably have all of the material you need. Mason jar with lid 6 inch piece of 4x4 Drill with 1/2 inch paddle bit Hook to hang the trap. Glue or screws Sugar, water, and vinegar All you need to do Attach the mason jar lid to the end of the 4x4 Use the paddle bit to drill through the mason jar lid and into the 4x4 about 4 to 5 inches About 1 inch up from the bottom of the 4x4 (bottom is where you attached the lid), drill up at a 45 degree angle Attach the hook to the top of the 4x4. Put some sugar, water, and vinegar in the mason jar Attach the mason jar to the 4x4 Hang the trap under an eave Periodically empty the trap and replace the bait2 points

COVID-19
2 pointsFirst of all... don't believe everything you see on the news. The media is a one way street and I trust them less and less these days. Second of all, the stupidity around the vaccine is just insane (not anyone here, I'm pointing more at the media). The reason they have to give booster shots is because they have NOT isolated the genome necessary for a real vaccine and will continue to provide booster shots for all the variants. Both the CDC and FDA websites have a ton of data on this subject, but you have to dig for it. In fact, did you know that all COVID vaccines currently being used are not on the FDA's approved list? They are experimental vaccines under a preliminary "emergency use authorization"... I'm not a medical professional, nor am I giving advice. I'm simply supplying a different point of view from the media and all the hype going on. https://www.fda.gov/vaccines-blood-biologics/vaccines/emergency-use-authorization-vaccines-explained Here's a list of approved vaccines: https://www.fda.gov/vaccines-blood-biologics/vaccines/vaccines-licensed-use-united-states What I am really worried about is using an experimental drug and having side effects. I'm not so sure my insurance company covers health conditions caused by experimental/unapproved vaccines. I'd rather take my chances than trust the political rush around this virus. Do your own research and take the necessary steps to be ABSOLUTELY sure you want to be doing this. You don't want to get stuck into a situation where a vaccine is pulled from the shelves (https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/joint-cdc-and-fda-statement-johnson-johnson-covid-19-vaccine). Good luck and stay safe, my friends. Mike2 points

1976 280 Z from Ohio to Dubai
2 pointsAnother win yesterday 🙏 Passed the test and registration as a classic, first time the car got license plates since it arrived in Dubai on 17th of September 2020. The Road and Transport Authority is literally 1km away from the workshop, but risking 6 months confiscation of the car to drive without registration was not worth saving 20$ for the recovery truck... The way back was the first drive, EVER, and was FANTASTIC ! Now I can focus on the mapping and test driving, still waiting a bit for the paint to fully cure before the polishing (that's why the Z side emblems are not on the car yet). I will probably lower it a bit more, especially the front, and still have plenty of work to clean up the engine bay, once I wired the fan control and changed injectors and CAS connectors as well. Recorded the start up and rev after driving it back from the registration: https://youtu.be/9yHdlEbfSG8, there is lot of work to be done.2 points

Zx 5 speed rebuild
2 pointsWithout a complete professional heat treat afterwards, there's no way I would put welding heat to an internal transmission gear like that. It's just a reverse idler, right? Only engaged when you shift into reverse? I'm no transmission guy, but unless it looks like one of the teeth is going to come off and get wedged between other teeth (and avalanche), I would just run it the way it is. Make sure your clutch is adjusted properly, come to a complete stop before shifting into reverse, and put the trans into any forward gear first right before you grab reverse. Do those and it won't get any worse.2 points

1 pointOh yeah. I bought the $50 scope at Academy Sports. The gun was only $100. I zero it in about once a year. That swimming noodle slincer makes a big difference too. I can stand in the kitchen and shoot without scaring the others away. I've shot family reunions and they never knew what hit them. I have to feed the red hawks and foxes back there. My neighbors are on board with this. The gray squirrels are rodents that get in my garage through the dog door and store nuts in my air boxes on the Camry and 280Z. They get in my neighbors attic and teethe on the romex wire covering. Hate those bastards like Carl and his "golf fers".1 point

1 pointI’m going to steal some of these ideas for our webmaster to think about! That’s a much nicer view than we have. [emoji106] Just been out for a quick one and sadly ran out of fuel about a mile in !!!! I need to pull the new sender and work out why it’s sticking at 3/4 - I suspect that last kink I didn’t fashion into a Z shaped one is the issue with the float pointing the opposite way probably sticking to something in the tank (it was a Datsun 620 truck one I modified to fit). At least now I don’t have to drain the tank to do it! The odometer was showing 165 miles since my last fill up, I suspect the lead in my right shoe is the cause of that one! After being rescued by a neighbour with a Gerry can, I left it idling for 10 mins in the garage which normally would pull the gauge well past half way and close to 3/4. Well this time it only made it 1/3 of the way across and it wasn’t moving any further. So at least it seems my heat challenges are looking more resolved but I need to do this again on a hot day. The Aisin appears to be constantly engaged as it feels just as vigorous cold or hot! Let’s let it heat cycle tonight and see how it does tomorrow morning. But at 1/2 speed due to my just under half sized ATi crank pulley, even if fully engaged it’s still the equivalent of 1/3 speed on a normal sized crank pulley and I can’t hear it. So it shouldn’t be costing too many ponies if I choose to live with it! ;) There is a nice bit of airflow if I put my hand on the front of the radiator, but there is an ENORMOUS dead spot in the middle of the fan, for obvious reasons! So when I fit the twin electric fans, I will ensure the flow in that area is improved.1 point

COVID-19
1 pointYeah, I agree that we have to live with it now. However, I disagree that it doesn't mean anything. If you watch the documentary, you'll hear that China locked down travel to the places where they think it started. In order to find the genome to create a real vaccine, I would think it's necessary to get in and find the origin -- which means China will have to lift these restrictions. The video suggests that some suspicion is still around bats, but, more because people are using bat droppings as fertilizer. Not around people eating bats or doing experiments in labs... I'm currently waiting for NHK to release the next part of this program because I'm very curious!1 point

The 1970 owners manual was probably first written for non-emissions cars and not updated as emission control items were mandated and added. Here is a snippet from a 1972 owners manual, it specifically mentions to not press or pump the accelerator pedal during starting, For reference here is a picture comparing my "non-emissions" engine (top) and the engine of of @Zeeguy62's car with emissions controls (grabbed from the Hemmings post). Interestingly, his car is has a VIN that is only 376 units earlier than mine.1 point

Question on front bumper rubber/moulding
Yes, the 73 model year was the start of changes to the front bumper to meet new US crash protection laws. The bumper is different from the earlier ones and had filler pieces on the ends and the center section due to being moved out further from the body.1 point

Question on front bumper rubber/moulding
Maybe a "specialist" on USA type 240z's can chip in, could it be that you are missing these? (The Euro version don't have these..) (I got a set of these, they came from a garage here in the Netherlands and are about 35 years old but new old stock. A technician ordered the wrong part...it happens!) I've seen these go for 200 dollar a piece! and were in worse state.. If this is what you need you can make me a offer, but remember the shippingcosts are also high, if interested i could get you a estimate on shipping costs.1 point

Fan clutch
1 pointThat’s a great idea! In fact, thinking about it more, I would imagine a lot of modern cars are using Thyristor based SSRs for modulating LED lights, motors, self-dimming fog lamps used with steering inputs etc. Will have to have a good look at that. Dropped the Aisin clutch in last night but at 22:00 it was a little unfriendly to warm the car to full temp - to quote a wise mansiteunseen “I have neighbours”! Aisin V the other one I bought a few years back for double the price which never seems to engage. A word of caution, the Aisin had a flange that is more than 2mm thinner than the stock clutch, enough to make my fan blades connect with the bolts on the front of the ATi damper - so more spacer washers went in between the fan hub and the clutch.1 point

Zx 5 speed rebuild
1 pointI wouldn't weld it. It could make the chipping worse. The chips are not as bad as I thought they were. I assure I have seen worse and they worked fine for thousands of miles without giving any trouble. The most I would do is clean them up a little with a dremel grinder. Be a little carefull using reverse and definitely don't try pulling it into reverse while the car is still rolling forward. The most probable cause of those chips is people hitting reversewhen they come outof 5th to go back to 4th. It tends to happen more when the selector bushes are worn. That is why they added the reverse lockout in the later version of the FS5W71B and C transmissions.1 point

Zx 5 speed rebuild
1 pointYou want the gears to be hard enough to be "tough" and "wear resistant" but not so hard that they're "brittle". And you want the heat treat to be predictable through the part. Welding heat would definitely take the metal above the temperature where the original heat treat would be changed. And without knowing how it changed, it's risky. After welding, it might be harder, softer, or exactly the same. It's all a crap shoot and the only safe thing would be to start over. And even that comes with issues because you don't know what the original spec was. I just see the whole thing as risky. I mean, not that I've never done risky stuff, but, you know...1 point

Tie Rod and Strut Question
1 pointp.s. somebody has put some modified springs in there. There's only three coils. There's a certain spring from another car that works if it's cut right. Somebody has already been in to those struts. Is it one of those lowered to the ground cars? Might be that the shocks have been bottoming out and beat the heck out of that gland nut. Won't be surprised if they've been stripped completely out. The picture I posted above shows that there are probably only one or two threads holding the shock in the tube.1 point

REAR SUSPENSION BUSHINGS AND MOUNTS
If you have the diff sitting on your hydraulic jack you can raise it into place to see if the snubber needs to be cut, lower the diff and take out the snubber to work on it. You will also have to have the mustache bar attacked to the back of the diff to get the spacing correct. When you install the snubber in the RT mount only engage the nut a couple of threads(this will save you a lot of time) let the diff lift the snubber into place as you raise the jack. Trying to get a wrench above the RT mount to tighten the snubber nut is a job you only want to do once.1 point

Found old Z pictures. I’ll start!
Agreed. That was a fun read (even for those of us who didn't grow up in the Fraser Valley). Nice to a mention of my old racing acquaintance from Kelowna, Keis Neirop (1983 Sebring winner and also responsible for the only all-wood 240Z rotisserie that I've ever seen). I poked around on the internet this morning and tracked down the location of the old Chilliwak Datsun dealership. As someone else on the linked thread pointed out, it's now only a shadow of its old self, reincarnated as 'Campus Auto Sales' and 'Classic Cars'. You can clearly identify the original showroom building by its roofline (looks like a little mini-racecar in the display area), with the service department entry to the left. The building behind the trophy girl with the big 'Datsun' logo would be the long wall on the right, now painted red.1 point

COVID-19
1 pointLinda and I finished our shots two weeks ago. I had a sore arm from my first shot, Linda didn't. Linda experienced bad nausea from the second shot. Spent 24 hours in bed. Couldn't keep anything down. I anticipated the sore arm and massaged my arm after my second. Woke up the next morning with a good ol' college hangover. Yes, I remember them! Felt good to take the stroll down memory lane in a left-handed sort of way. Of course, just like college, I was good to go by 4 in the afternoon. I'm still masking around the general public. The 'Z' mask, of course. I encourage everyone to get the vaccine, no excuses. Just suck it up. It's not as bad as getting the disease. My 2 cents.1 point
