Datsun-240z Vs Fairlady-z432
4 pointsAgain thank you everyone, Mr . Kawashima will be so happy when he see these comments . The reason why I took off the #1 FS5C71A just after a few thousand kilometers, was I wanted to have rotations between these two perfectly rebuilt 71A . And also me and Mr. Kawashima both were curious about how the big two nuts stay after a couple thousand kilometers usage. We will check it again in next few thousand kilometers. Also I want to see how the synchros are getting worned out . Gavin , I would love to ! You can visit me anytime and you have to determine what is the Z432 and what is the 240ZG , also the automatic Z with A/C and the 4speed with 3.364 Z by driving them in your hand . All of my cars are daily driver , you can test the wiper and the rear glass defroster in a heavy rain , and see the how “ parking lights “ and “ passing lights “ work at night .The aerial mast and the 8 track FM pack make you feel good . I wish I could open a cafe with Zs , for everyone who wants to see and feel the original Zs just like back in 70’s . Kats4 points

3 points@M3333hp adding the '@' symbol prior to a user name on the forum will tag them and send an email to them. @Carl Beck @Zed Head Congratulations on steering this topic off topic. The OP has not indicated in any way of VIN tampering or otherwise obtaining a title under false pretenses. YOU have brought that up. The OP was requesting information on obtaining information on where the car was originally sold. In Canada, or the US. That is what I read from his original post. Does the Oregon DMV show the prior owner on it's title?? In Virginia, it doesn't. So, if he bought it as he stated, some years ago, unless he is OCD and keeps good records and files everything, he may not have the seller's info that he bought it from now. Heck, I bought my daily driver in July, obtained a title by legal means, and can't tell you the name of the person I bought it from. Sheesh. It's too bad that even 'confused' reactions that get reputation points.3 points

A "Fun Run" blast from the past. 1974
While Motorman7 is restoring my '73 240Z, (thread titled: We're bringing back the flat tops!) I've started digitizing the slides I took of the car I've kept since I bought it new in 1973. I came across the pictures I took of a "fun run" in 1974 sponsored by Jack Gubrud, the owner of Gubrud's Valley Datsun in Mt. Vernon, Washingon. That was where I bought my car in April, 1973 after returning from a 10+ month deployment to Vietnam aboard the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk. This was on Sunday, August 4th, 1974 from Mt. Vernon WA (north of Seattle) over the North Cascade Highway through the Cascade mountains to the town of Winthrop, WA. I believe almost all of the Zs in these photos were purchased at Gubrud's Valley Datsun. Lots of S30s! As I recall, Jack Gubrud paid for a BBQ picnic lunch for everyone. And we had a presentation by a Datsun engineer about the new Hitachi carbs. Wish I had paid more attention!2 points

HLS30-00456 Up for Auction on eBay
2 pointsAgreed. It is going to take a lot of time and money to restore this car properly. The prices keep going up on these 1969 240Z production cars no matter what condition they're in.2 points

2 pointsAccording to Carl's list, HLS30-00958 is in Connecticut; if that adds anything to this discussion. The model identification list that ZedHead posted is probably from a later chassis manual of some sort judging by the reference to SU carburetors. However, that list appears in the May 1970 Service Bulletin vol. 125 "Introduction of the Datsun 240Z Sports Model S30 Series". I can't scan the thing (and we have discussed this in the archives - possibly the HLS30-UN thread) so I'm going to make some explaining: Every LHD car imported into North America was an HLS30U. It doesn't say that on any stamped chassis ID, but that's what our North American cars are. They all came with L24 engines, F4W71A-4 gearboxes, and 3.364 final drives. The Basic HLS30Us had engine emission control devices but it was the HLS30UV that had the evaporative emission controls. For instance, my cars are HLS30Us without the evaporative tank but with smog pumps on the engine. Canada export cars, HLS30UN, did not get either emission setup, thus the E41 balance tube. However, both HLS30UVs and HLS30UNs went to Canada. In the State of Ontario, HLS30Us were HLS30UVs because they had emission control devices on the engine and evaporative emission control devices on the chassis. So! There's a good chance your car could be an Ontario import which probably doesn't help because it is the same HLS30UV that was sold on the West coast of USA.2 points

1 pointZed Head, Thanks for your comments, but there is no problem with the title for this car, nor is there any other kind of issue like that. I have a clean British Columbia title for the car, and my name is on it as the owner. The two stamped VIN tags and the VIN etched on the firewall all match. This car is HLS30-00957, and the clean British Columbia title carries that same VIN. I’m not sure what holes you think the car or my story has, but the simple fact is that I just want to know where the car was first sold: the US or Canada? Like a lot of other owners, I want to know the history of my car, which came to me with no useful history, unfortunately. For example, if my car is ever sold to someone in the US I imagine that person would want to know where the car came from, especially since if it was originally sold in the US they would be free of having to pay duty to re-import the car back into the US --- if a US origin could be documented on official paperwork. Also, there is a restoration issue with the intake/emissions configuration, where Canadian cars had the ‘clean’ Euro balance tube on the intake manifold, but US cars had a different balance tube and lots of emissions equipment mounted there. I want the restoration to be accurate, and I think most Z car fans would want that too. I’m not sure why you think I might be messing with the VIN. I have owned two 240Zs in my life, the first being HLS30-03778 which I owned from 1974 to 2003, and which the buyer sold on BaT not long ago. I purchased my 2nd 240Z---the car being discussed here---about 6 years ago in British Columbia and I am pumping a LOT of $$ and sweat equity into a ground-up restoration. I want to do it right, and to do that I need to know where the car came from, plain and simple. I have been around cars all my life, I own 4 performance cars right now, I am serious about them, and I want this 240Z resto to be right. Mark Maras, Thanks for your post. That’s exactly the kind of info I was hoping for. I’ll find that thread and read it. It might give me a good lead to follow. Thanks for the comments everyone.1 point

1 pointI really do not think he is trying to mess with any VIN, just try to find out if there is a way to find out if it was imported into Canada or the US in 1970. Nissan used extra letters in the VIN to track where they were shipped to, but did not put these letters to any of the VIN numbers on the car. Kind of think you are off base with the whole title thing.1 point

240k Race car - GTR tribute
1 pointWell the plan was to just a simple freshen up, but that is not going to work. Engine out and inspected. The block was already bored to around 89mm so after sonic checking, we could not even get a hone, the leaking headgasket has scoured the bores. So luckily found a fresh unmolested block (thanks Don - who sold me the car for letting me have one out of his collection). This is currently off being linebored and we are going to reuse the deisel crank and 260Z rods as they are in good shape. We are going to put in forged pistons, but waiting on some calcs before deciding how much to bore as we will be running around 10:1 compression. I run the car on Av-gas (aviation full 100octane) so there is no reason to not up the compression. The old sump is looking a bit sad as it has been modified a lot of times and the exhaust headers are rusted out from running the leaded gas (and their ten years age). So had my first delivery from Japan. new exhaust manifold, new clutch and had the starter motor and alternator rebuilt. Next .... finding a head and .....1 point

country of origin of HLS30-00957
1 pointThis post might help, as it is a lower vin than mine and on the west coast I think it would have none of the emission equipment on it if it is a Canadian UN car. That includes no air pump, no vapor tank, only three holes in the tubing isolators (brake, fuel and fuel return), double grove hormonic balancer, smooth balance tube, no flow guide, no small port on the block vent tube to name a few things. That said if it was brought into Canada via Ont. than it would have all of that and look just like a US car.1 point

My Rockers seem to be a little off, or I'm off my Rocker(s)
Delta Cam's is a wonderful business. Ignoring the fact that postal service delivery took 20 days to get there and back, they turned around 132 rocker regrinds in 48 hours (once they got there...) Every one looks like the 12 randomly selected rockers below. They look like they have some kind of coating on them, applied everywhere. Hardening process or the result of a polishing or tumbling step to make them look pretty? I suppose I could just ask...1 point

1974 Datsun 260z
1 pointThe tag reads L26 - 087013 RLS30 - 033565 You have the pink slip in hand so I assume you want to sell it? I would pull it out and hose it off first then give it a wash and find out what you have, a solid rust free shell is always desirable. Without the numbers matching engine it will be worth a lot less but there will be many buyers that won't mind that at all, engines are still pretty easy to find. What a great find, lots of potential. Please post some pics after the clean up and of the interior.1 point
