The indention is there so it will meet the subframe rail. There is a step in there on the subframe that aligns with that indention. There is a row of spot welds through the bottom of the indention

It's a double edged sword! It's great if you're ready to cash out. Not so great if you want to drive them and enjoy them. Harder to insure and you have to start thinking like a Ferrari owner. Is it safe, is someone going to vandalize it or hit it in the parking lot. I sort of miss the "it's a cheap car" thing. It made it very low stress to "drive it like you stole it" and to park it anywhere. Yes, you can remove the shims under the hinges. which will move it forward, but you have to be very careful the hatch lip doesn't contact the roof! It will remove the paint really quickly if it does. The hatch looks like it might still be a touch lower than the roof which will add to potential interference
