He does a great Alec Baldwin impression.
  2. Well, the ceiling and insulation are finally done. I have been trying to get that scheduled since September. The guys are a little frustrating, but they do really nice work. Here are a few pictures, so you can be the judge. Over the weekend, I was able to get the rest of the lights installed and working. I have 24 LED lights at 3810 lumens each. The lighting is just about perfect. It is really bright and clear, with no shadows or dark spots anywhere in the shop. I am really happy with the way that turned out. My HVAC guy just had a double hernia operation, so he won't be able to put the heater in for 6-8 weeks. Another delay, but at least I can move forward with getting the place organized now.

I don't think I have stated this before, but to all my friends on this forum (Red or Blue), be smart, be kind and be safe. Tell those you love; you love them! Because we're not guaranteed tomorrow...

Empathy means that you feel what the other person is feeling. Sympathy means you can understand what a person is feeling. Compassion is the willingness to relieve the suffering of another. People can be altruistic but it's not easy for the wealthy to be altruistic. The people who have amassed fortunes, large and small, have gotten it because of their feeling of superiority, greed and narcissism. Narcissists will only help someone if they perceive they'll be getting something for their trouble. The deeper into the Narcissism spectrum one goes, the less compassion one has for others. Kathy and I have worked with the needy and homeless for the last three years. I've seen far more compassion among the homeless and needy than any other group of people in my 71 years. Sharing essentials, food, shelter, clothing, drugs (good and bad) and money is a way of life for these people because they truly care about their fellow human beings who have less than them. I don't see this behavior in the rich people. If they give someone something it will only be a miniscule portion of their wealth and they'll expect something back in return.

This is not defeatist, it is a clear understanding of human nature and human history. Give a contrarian example in human history? We can live in reality or a make believe world. People with money will get better care on average than a poor person. I didn’t say it was right or fair but that doesn’t matter. Why are all these Hollywood Elites getting tested when they have no symptoms. They are “special”, you and I are not and couldn’t get tested unless we meet certain criteria. They used unnecessary “finite” resources.... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. in an attempt to reduce oil consumption (1q 1000 apx) I decided to replace the intake guide seals. I decided to only to the intakes since its not an easy task and I figure the exhaust side would not suck oil anyway. Based on the condition they have been I would think its prob not going to help anyway since the old ones seem pliable, but maybe a bit larger diameter where the valve stem seals. I was going to do a video but that is just too hard to capture so I thought I would share my process. removed the valve cover, and all the plugs. used a 19mm on the camshaft bolt to turn the lobes with the intake lobe straight up, this is past TDC on the piston stroke. used some rubber hose that just fits into the plug hole, then used my seal puller pliers to choke up on it near the plug hole so I can push it in it will not go any more. The pliers help grip in close to the hole so you don't have the hose bending while trying to stuff it in. rotate the camshaft back so the lobes are "bunny ears" this will push the piston up to TDC and really jam the hose up against the valve. I forgot to mention I used the natural bend in the hose and aim for the intake valve. loosen the rockers jam nut and run the pivot all the way down. remove the rocker arm retainer spring, the pry off the rocker from the pivot. I used the 17 mm wrench handy to lift up on the back of the rocker near the pivot. I suppose you could also just depress the valve spring a bit to. Just make sure you keep up with the lash pad. It will prob stay over the valve but stil... with the rocker out of the way use the OHC valve spring compressor, the kind that hooks around the cam shaft (not the lobes) and has a pivot point that allows for downward pressure on the valve spring. You may want to give the top of each valve spring a light smack with a large drift to loosen up the retainers. while depressing the valve springs use a magnet on a stick (small) and retrieve the two retainers. with them out the spring release to its full height. While doing this its a good idea to watch the valve stem it may move downward some, but if the hose was set right it will be very little. the less movement the better since you do not have to depress the spring as much. remove the spring assy (two springs an inner and outer and a cap, keep up with the lash pad (get that out before attempting the retainers with the magnet). watch out for a spacer that sits on the bottom of the spring stack, it prob will stay on the top of the head, but you want to make sure as you remove the springs. now the easy part use the valve stem seal puller pliers to remove the old seal, just grab it mid section and gently pull up. Careful here as the pliers will want to jump up and you are right next to the cam lobe, just don't want to scratch anything. I soaked the new Nissan seals in some motor oil to install, then use the pliers above to push it into place. you can see when it bottoms out. replace the valve springs, setup the spring compressor, replace the retainers (yea just like that, presto). the retainers can be a bit of a pita. I used some hemostats and would set one in place from the driver side, ease up on the compressor while rotating the retainer around so the next one will be easier to go in. A single retainer once set will hold it together while you get the next retainer setup on the hemostats. I tried for a 10/4 or 2/8 position as this was where they were when I started. You may want to look make note of this for yourself. anyway after some fiddling with the second retainer it will just drop in an your are done. replace the rocker and reset the lash. Have fun!!

Thank heavens that the current occupant brings to the stage other people who can speak in complete sentences. Once again, the current occupant muddies the water, presents contradictory ideas about distributing drugs, and generally ad-libs his way into semi-coherency. He also said that states would be "opening up soon" although the reality is going exactly the opposite way. More states are closing down public activities every day. There is no leadership on the national level. I'm grateful that most governors are smart enough to take independent action that is needed. We are still very much in shutdown mode, and I don't see that changing for a few weeks. One thing that's true and IMPOTUS referred to: business can't stay closed forever. I believe there's a shorter window for business to tolerate being closed than the health situation mandates. I expect businesses to begin the re-opening process before health authorities want them to.

You are right, here is todays public service announcement; Disinfecting with Clorox, Today, I wanted to make a mixture of Clorox to disinfect the counter tops in the kitchen, bathroom, etc. The working mixture of bleach to disinfect is 1:10 (initial volume/final volume). I assumed that the amount of Sodium Hypochlorite (SH) in the Clorox bottles was 6-7%. I checked the several bottles of Clorox (4 of them) we have in the laundry room and I could not find the amount of SH on any of the bottle labels. These Clorox bottles are all of the “Splash-Less” type, commonly available in the stores, and therefore the amount of SH, although not stated on the label, I have found it is no more than 1%. So if you dilute it further 1:10, you end up with a mixture with 0.1% SH, just good enough to brighten your laundry, and that’s about it! Furthermore, on ONLY one of the 4 bottles, it states clearly that this type of “Splash-Less” Clorox is NOT made to disinfect anything! The solution is to buy REGULAR BLEACH CLOROX, that is if you still can find it, which has the right concentration of SH (It is shown on the label), or use another make of beach, but also checking first the SH concentration. -Copied from somewhere-

Press conference about to start. Sad-sack Barr is moping around already. It's on... He finally stopped with "Chinese" virus. Just said the virus. 73 "pallets" of supplies to NY. Trump is recommending his own cures for "the virus". He really thinks that he knows medicine. Telling story of one guy who didn't die. He took the drug, didn't die, woke up and felt good. Chloroquine for everyone! Gift from god! Big game changer! He's thanking Bolsonaro. See previous post about Brazil. Trump tries to pronounce the word scourge. Skorj. Barr speaks. Hoarding and price-gouging. Boring... Deborah Birx has drank the Koolaid. Downplaying the severity of the virus. Young people will be okay! Only old people die. Over 50. She actually said "I think that this is reassuring to all of us". I think that she's about 65. DIY testing is coming! Yay. She's implying that NY is a special case. Downplay.... Pence. New FEMA guy. Still sounds not like a guy who knows what he's doing. Explaining too-little-too-late principle, indirectly. Questions... Trump says words to soothe the stock market. The country will be "open" again soon. It's not working. Talking about states as countries. The country of Iowa. Birx sounded reasonable but she's still being bent to Trump's will. Sad. She is basically saying that each hot spot will last eight weeks. And we might have to isolate old people. Trump compares the virus to the flu. We've circled back around to "it's just the flu".. Who knows. Idiot reporter still focused on why Rand Paul got a test. He's a Senator. Trump talks about himself... Trump goes in to simpleton mode. Trying to explain complex issues with a tiny tool box. Seriously, he can't really form a complete thought and explain it. The talking heads have taken over. Summary - Trump will be "reopening" things in a week or two. Not clear what, exactly, he would reopen.

I went today and bought the last thing I think I need to stay home and make progress on the Z's paint job. So i should be good to go for a few weeks now. My wife's company has just been declared essential... Good and bad to that: Good: She'll still get a good paycheck Bad: no time off and out and about where she could get exposed

So far in these press conferences all I've seen is our Fearless Leader pat himself on the back. Then others take the mic and pat him on the back, which is followed by patting their own backs, Dr. Fauci excluded. The only part of this trif?cta I find enjoyable is the "nasty questions" time. The lack of answers to the questions is appalling. Narcissism can control a group as well as an individual. The world is full of group egos. Tribalism, cults, some patriotism, some religions, the list is endless. They're all rooted in group survival but if and when the group breaks down, it's like the last lap of a good race, there are no teammates, it's everyman for himself.

Most say the solution has to balance: 1. Keeping most people alive. 2. Keeping economy alive. 3. Not overburdening the health care system. Taiwan is the only country that seems to have been prepared and got it right.
  19. Gundee, Thanks for responding. I am sorry to be the bearer of mixed news. The URL that you sent has a 360 deg view button, one of images is a dimension view. This is the url for that dimension view. https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/ba9s-ba7s/ba9s-led-bulb-4-led-ba9s-retrofit-car-classic-car-bulbs/6/. I have some of these and I believe that they fit in the speedometer and tach (will check if you need me to), but they do not fit in the gauges - oil temp, amp fuel or clock. As you can see the length is 26 mm for this bulb. The length of the bulb listed by SteveJ is 18 mm and I believe it will fit everything. ps 1 (3/23/20) I just checked and the 26 mm does fit in the speedometer and the tach. ps 2 (3/24/20) sorry to do this but I did not want to mislead anyone. I was working on the harness in my dash, and inadvertently put just the slightest amount of tension on one of the bulbs for the speedometer. It came out of its socket. So it turns out that the 26 mm LEDs do in fact hit the green lens inside the speedometer and the tach. I was fooled because one of the bulbs seemed tight enough, but it would be a mistake, in my opinion, to use the 26 mm bulbs anywhere on the dash. So to tie a bow around this the original incandescent length is approximately 20 mm. The alternative that SteveJ has suggested (thanks again) is 18 mm. There is one more critical dimension. There are 2 posts that extend out of the barrel of the bulb. they provide a key/locking scheme to keep the bulb in the socket. I apologize if I am confusing anyone. Anyway, on the suggested alternative there is a collar. That collar is no doubt larger than the socket, so the distance from the post on the barrel to the collar could be, likely is, critical if it is too short then you will not be able to get the bulb in the socket. This dimension is not available, so I cant be certain that the alternative will work. I will update this when I get the bulbs that I ordered. Sorry for the confusion. regards, ron

Here's something on the role of big government, and price "gouging". With no oversight, the "free" market automatically diverts resources to the "rich". The people with the most money. It's how the machine works, like an engine with no governor. On Monday, New York governor Andrew Cuomo said the scramble to supply health workers with more equipment has lead to a state-against-state bidding war, and reiterating his call for the Trump administration to nationalize the production of medical equipment. Before the pandemic hit, Cuomo said New York state paid $0.85 per respirator mask, but the cost was now $7. And that is why he wants the federal government involved.“Order the production of masks and gowns and ventilators,” from private industry, Cuomo said. “Give them a deadline, don’t get into this mad bidding war… The president can do this.”

  24. Time and corrosion that slowly builds on the contacts, creating ever increasing resistance at the fuse/clip contacts and even within the wire crimps at the connectors. This creates increasing heat. Which accelerates the corrosion, which accelerates the heat, etc. That particular circuit operates at a fairly high current level that makes it the first go. BTW the fuse selection itself does nothing to limit current, it is just a switch that blows when the current in the circuit exceeds its melt point. Voltage and resistance in the circuit determine the current. V=IR

Ps. Forget the Zombie apocalyptic views of empty super markets and the hospital videos - just wait until broadband services / WiFi / 4G go down!!!!!! People will really turn at that point! On the upside of all of this, not a single contrail in the sky and the air in our local town (which is already in the countryside) is soooooo much cleaner due to lack of school runs and car traffic. Clearly this isn’t sustainable but it does show how desperately we need to lose the ICE for daily use - even if the pollution is just as bad and more localised.

Rich buying their own personal ventilators and getting tested before others.....so unpredictable. https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2020/03/21/exclusive-rich-russians-are-hoarding-ventilators-to-protect-themselves-against-the-coronavirus-a69703 https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-20/rich-and-powerful-jump-to-the-front-of-line-for-tests-and-care I believe people can be altruistic...many people can act unselfishly but the majority of humanity will chose self over others when a choice has to be made. Its easy to be altruistic when you are wealthy. I don’t consider myself a expert in human psychology but life has taught me some hard lessons about what humans will do when pressed. We seek self-interest, it’s a selected gene in a Darwinian explanation of human survival. I’ve seen it on the battlefield...when people you care about are dying and the enemy is trying to survive. It’s raw, brutal and real. We also survive because we can work together to solve problems. We instinctively know we win when we work together for a common good. This is where are are now. We need more ventilators...it’s all hands on deck. Re-tool factories to make them ASAP, we are fighting for our own survival. I pray this approach works, if any country can do this, American can. 31. Dave, I did one valve seal (#1 intake) in situ. I didn't take pics of every stage, but I did take a few. So here's a couple pics to go with your text. I used rope (not rubber tubing). Stuff the cylinder full and then rotate the crank to push it upward into the valves: Once you have the springs off, pull the old seal up and off: And put the new one on. Be sure to use the little straw so you don't mess up the new seal on the sharp edge corners of the retainer groove: And when I put it back together, I used a short length of rope to hold the spring compressor tool in place (with the springs compressed). That way I could use both hands to fiddle with the retainer wedgies instead of trying to manage the tool in one hand while giving a wedgie with the other. Process looked like this:

I said it would resort to “means” rationing. If you are on Medicare you might not be so lucky. If you are Nancy Pelosi, Sean Penn or Mitt Romney they’ll have a ventilator waiting for you. If you have great insurance you are going to likely get better care. Its pretty simple and it will never change. Under ANY system the elite will get premium care and the only different is under socialized medicine the non-elite have to take what’s been rationed. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  33. You can lower it to the ground from under the hood then reach under the car and slide it out. No need to raise the car. On the other hand, it might be easier to reach the bolts with the car raised. Make sure that you disconnect your negative cable at the battery first. Don't want the positive cable hanging loose if the negative is still connected.
  34. The headlight relay harness does not impact the parking lights at all. I posted this a few years back: The best way to keep the circuit intact (IMHO): Change all of the exterior markers and interior dash bulbs to LEDs. (You will lose the dimmer function unless you change the rheostat to a PWM, but that's a topic for @Captain Obvious to describe.) Change the 20A fuse to a 10A fuse. (This limits the current and heat build-up.) Clean the contacts (front and back) on the fusebox. (This should get rid of hot-spots in your fusebox.)

Me neither. I wasn't besmirching American workers but underlining the fact that next to no Americans would be getting any bailout from their employer...if it indeed trickled down that far. Side note; workers on cruise ships are "allowed" to be inebriated, provided they can hold their booze and it isn't obvious.
  38. To me, the dash install is so much simpler with the windshield out. And. we've installed a dozen windshields with the dash in place (dash in place - not the finisher). In the beginning, we were using a small cord and it really is much like grannyknot described but I find the lower corners much easier than the upper ("sharper") corners. Once we changed procedure to larger diameter wet cloth as the pull string (1/8" or so cotton cord) it became a non-issue. Decreased the time and effort ten-fold (that's probably an exaggeration - but it's a heck-of-a-lot easier...) Q, go ahead and install your dash and invite me up when you're ready for glass!

Maybe it's the sausage. I had breakfast in a German airport and it was all sausage. Ten different kinds of sausage. Actually, they're proposing that it might just be the care that the sick people are getting. The hospitals aren't full and they were ready. Some expect the numbers to go up as they get over-run. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/22/germany-low-coronavirus-mortality-rate-puzzles-experts

  41. Well thanks, glad I could help. I put the windshield in before the dash so I can get right up next to the glass and rubber seal when pulling the trimmer line to bring the seal over the pinch weld. I just feel I have better control of the process when I have some room to move, with the dash in place there isn't much room to maneuver the string. Especially in the bottom R/L corners where you have to rotate the string to get it jump over the pinch weld.
  42. I don't know about "approved" but I have re-installed the interior of several Z's now and here's my sequence, Headliner vinyl, header and side apron vinyl, a second person for the headliner is a big help but it can be done by yourself. Windshield and quarter windows. Dynamat or one of the many identical products for sound deadening and heat reflection. Install the wiring harness. Install Heater/blower and any AC parts. Install the dash, then insulation and carpets, plastic panels, add seat belts, then seats. Actually seats and steering wheel are the absolute last things to go in since you may have to crawl under the dash to correct some wiring fault.
