I am sorry, I know I am adding yet another A/C thread. I did a search on the topic, but I need additional advice. I would like to add A/C to my 73 240Z. I am leaning more towards the "factory" kit because it is made for the car. Courtesey nissan no longer has the factory kits available. Has anyone had any experience with the classic or vintage air kits. I know I need to go with a modern Sanden type compressor. I have also read that the Honda blower motor is a good upgrade for increased air flow. Does anyone have any thoughts or guidence?

This forum has been very helpful to me. As a means of documenting some of what we have done and to help others avoid some of my mistakes I thought I would post the installation of a vintage gen II mini AC system. Background: My son and I are restoring a 1973 240z. We call it the bucket, as there was a significant amount of rust that had to be dealt with and our other choice – Money Pit was already taken. We are changing the color from 113 avocado green to mango orange, it has an L-28 engine and a 5 speed gear box. At this point: the car was taken to bare metal, metal replaced where required and any rust has been eliminated the …

Well as anyone knows that lives in a hot climate the 240 air blows. Well actually it sucks and that's the problem. The blower motor sucking through the evaporator is not a very good arrangement. After doing a bit of research I opted to go with the Vintage Air unit. The tipping point for me was the fact that they use servo motors to control the flaps and this will work out better for me in the future. After you get rid of all of the old heater and ac unit there is a ton of room back there. The first picture is of my old unit which this being a Z car forum you all have seen before. This is the GEN II Mini with the brackets I fabbed up for mounting. With this bracket a…

Hello! It is summer, as we know best down here in Tucson. Temperature has already exceeded 110 degrees and AC becomes pretty important to most people. My '77 280Z appears to have come with a stock/dealer installed AC system. All the R-12 was long gone when I bought the vehicle, but the system appears to be very intact still. The problem with R-12 is it's availability and price, not to mention environmental effects. I've recently realized how easy and inexpensive it is to convert an R-12 to an r134a system (in fact cheaper than an R-12 charge-up in many cases). Since my dashboard is out of my Z, as well as everything in the engine bay, I decided I have the perfect opportun…

A good buddy @chaseincats put me onto this upgrade last year, he originally found it over on HybridZ. The replacement motor and fan comes from one of our favorite donor cars - a '99 Kia Sportage. He pulled one from a salvage car and installed it into his 280Z. Yes, the housing needs a 1/16th trim all around the opening but that is the only mod. His electrical plug was a direct fit. For my 240Z, the OE motor is hardwired with a spade and bullet fitting. Another buddy recently did the same upgrade for his '72 resto project and he put together a jumper for me with the correct plug for the motor and the spade and bullet for my harness. Grinding out the housing with eve…

Hi All, I have been recently diagnosed with bad allergies that keep me indoors during the summer heat and humidity. To the point of I'm nearly going to pass out. This is a real bummer for a fun living Z car driver, without air conditioning. I have been given an increase of my social security with the passing of my husband. Both bad and good news. This has enabled me to have some extra $ for things needed on my lovely 1976 Z, RedBird. I am asking you all, just what is involved with getting her non-working AC, or needing to be totally replaced AC, in her working? How do I find someone that is skilled with Z's to do the work? What do I need to know before s…

Do we have any A/C experts in the house? My 77 280 came without A/C and I'm working on adding a system. I've got the interior stuff done and have turned my attention to the stuff in the engine compartment. Has anyone got any experience with using parts from a different vehicle and adapting them to the Z? I'm assuming the technology and compressor designs for the newer stuff (designed for R134) is better than the stuff from forty years ago. Newer, lighter, more efficient, cheaper? I could "relatively easily" fab up a mounting bracket to mount a different compressor where the stock one goes. Use a ubiquitous compressor from a Maxima, Civic, or Corolla instead of t…

Hi, I have '75 280z and it comes with nice big pet-bottle style vacuum tank. I wonder whether I can just swap this with 280zx smaller size vacuum tank with valves to save space and clean up. swap with 280zx vaccum tank. Do you think there is any problem? Thanks, tamo3

Hi everyone, I’m really wanting to add a/c to my stock 77 280z. Unfortunately the car did not come with it so I’m looking into what my options are for adding it. I can’t find any reviews of people that have added it so I’m not sure where to start. Any advice from anyone that has done this would be very helpful! Thanks y’all!! The wiring harness that runs from fan switch to the blower has a wire blue with white stripe and on my harness this wire is coming from the connector at the blower. This wire is not connected to anything and I am not sure if it is supposed to. Including a photo to help explain. Currently my blower won't turn on. I can't see anywhere on the fsm that shows this harness. Not sure if I accidentally cut a wire. 1972 240z built 9/71 Phil Smith

Hello I own a 1972 240Z without air conditioning. The dealer installed AC was pulled out. I've been searching for someone to install one for me. I don’t have the skill, space or tools to complete the task. I have my eye on the Gen II compac from Vintage Air. I currently live in Southern Cal and at some point will be moving to Texas. The quote I received from a shop in Santa Ana, CA called The Air Shop was about $3,200. That would include the Gen II, an electric fan and installation. It’s my understanding that this is very labor intensive. I just want to know if this is considered a reasonable cost or maybe they don’t won’t to work on it and gave me a high quote to…

I've got a 72 Z that came with just about every dealer option they offered back then, including an a/c system from Frigiking. I almost have the complete original system on the car, including all the under dash plumbing, switches, dryer, etc. However, I am missing the compressor, compressor mounting bracket, and the condenser is sitting in the back of the car. My question is what should I do to get the a/c working on the car? should I just get a compressor and condenser? Can a condenser be cleaned and reused? Or should I junk the system and get a new kit? I know that the a/c discussion for these cars have been talked about a ton, I just thought my situation was a bit diffe…
