  1. Hi Arne, The only engines I've seen reliefs cut in pistons, are the 73 engines...with the "good" 9mm rods. I've only taken apart 3 73 engines. So YMMV When I first started racing, I discovered that new valve springs must be replaced occassionally. Weak valve springs, and over reving/poor down shifting will soon pound the same type of valve reliefs in flat tops:hurt: ......I wouldn't rule out the stock pistons, maybe a chance the block will clean up w/out overbore. Good luck with the rebuild, david
  2. Hi Duffman, I have VIN 1222 and it had no provisions for the evaporation tank... I have often wondered at which point Datsun decided that gas fume recovery tanks were needed...Govt mandated I s'pose... I hope one of the local Gurus will shed some light. David Btw, I do have an extra in good shape. Shoot me a line if inerested...Volgolf@aol.com
  3. The extra week of play and injuries that have came out of playing 100% to get past last 5 weeks of play is gonna make it tough. Seattle looks good as well. Mistake free for now. Fingers crossed here in the east for a few mistakes out west w/Hasselback david
  4. Or original engine....smart to have this checked...here is a most recent thread that will help your mechanic.... http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19578&highlight=original+engine Good luck with your purchase david
  5. Its confusing that same "E-88" head has at least 3 variations? 71-early 72? have chamber size and valves of E-31...with better flow then E31, or so I've heard from several sources. 72-73 240 E-88...larger chamber same valve size. 73-74 260 E-88...larger chamber, bigger exhaust valve....
  6. Took the bathroom scales down to the barn this morning.... windsheild OEM.....255 pounds.... Aftermarket Guardian brand.....247....... Yep, I need all the help I can get to reach 2430 with me in the car....scales showed 227.5 by myself. By no means are the bathroom scales spot on. Just a good comparison. Removing 6-8 pounds off the top half of racer will make a noticable difference....the car and the driver This is fairly common knowledge in the racing community, told to me by part time sensei Katman. Being able to weigh these side by side, verifies what I've been told last few years. david
  7. Quick note to the racers here that have to retain OEM type glass in their cars. Jmark brought out to the track this past weekend an aftermarket windsheild that was pitted from gravel from street use. Thanks Mark!! While unpacking trailer at home, handling the windsheild along side a badly cracked OEM peice, I noticed a definate difference in weight of 2 units...has to be 5-6 pounds....great place to lose a little weight, up high in the car. Swap out the OEM glass with the cheapest aftermarket peice you can find!! Good luck with your racing... David
  8. Thanks for the pictures Mark, enjoyed the weekend. Great camera....Will be forced to paint that fender with that camera snapping away at such resolution. Looking forward to the ARRC!! David
  9. 70s with Vins <7500? or so had carby w/funny float bowl cover. But easiest ID "early 70" is the lack of drain for the bowl.... Flunked english David
  10. Check out trackschedule.com, several HPDE dates in the southeast this fall. david
  11. Hi Zsaint, Check fusible link at starter, I had a car stop dead in the road, looked good, but tested bad. EScanlon said: "Is the car an automatic? If so, have you checked the interlock switch in the transmission? If that's not connected, you're not going to start....period. " If the car use to be an automatic, you'll still have to jump wiring for tranny, if you retained auto wiring harness. david
  12. HI, Give me a buzz at volgolf@aol.com. I have a couple of sets. David Spillman

Fire protection/insulation should be another consideration with attached garages. Although proper firewall construction is generally enforced by local building code, I'm sure many of you know of people who have built on to their houses without going thru the local permit process. In the event of fire, being able to isolate this event from the living area of your home, will provide valuable minutes for response from the local fire department. FWIW, David
  14. Yes as a complete unit....half shaft flange and stub stay together 240 vs 260. david
  15. Dreco, If not already covered, the 240z stub axle shaft is smaller so to speak then the later 260/280 stub. This point driven home, when we replaced stub axles during a race weekend "under stress" .....pulled a severed 280 stub axle, slapped in a 240z stub, didn't think to swap used the 280 inner flange. BTW, pull wheel, then drum, carefully examine the weld where stub axle shaft is attached to plate that wheel studs come thru....if this completely fails, things can go bad real fast...... Be careful Just a thought, David
  16. David , What's the Vin # on the firewall of your car?
  17. HI David, Are you looking for the rubber mount,or the rubber mount itself? the 72 has 2 horizontal bolts/nuts holding mount..earlier cars mount to captured nut vertically.....if that makes any sense. I've got a couple of both if still needed. Email me at volgolf@aol.com....I'm getting rid of a bunch of stuff..... david spillman
  18. $24,000 for Z with bungie cord battery tie down? Wow. david
  19. Hi Mark, OOT since Friday, sorry I hope to be back together by VIR in May...MARRS/SARRC race. Maybe a couple at Road Atlanta, Savannah...ARRC in November...
  20. Hi Mark, I'm a lurker here, but I do enjoy the early z on the track...I'm not close to williams speed, but have had fun in my ITS z......Being a underdog now is kinda fun. Kids and work taking up tons of time presently, but I'll be back one day.... david spillman
  21. HI Guys, How many Green/Black combos out there? The Alaska Ebay Z.. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4538933664&category=6187 has perked my interest. This is the 3rd 70 z I know of in the US to claim the black interior was original interior..my question to ya'll, is are there others? There has to be.... I recently purchased VIN# 1222 with 907/black interior, Owner claimed original, but as less then honest mistakes multiplied, I soon discounted his claims. Now as I've noticed these "anomalies" more frequently, I feel black should be listed as an available interior color for the early green Z... Not that any purchaser during the first year had any say about color while waiting in the long line. Interested in all opinions, david spillman
  22. Dead flo, If my recollections are correct the 70-73 rear bumper will fit.....I know there aren't any shock absorbers til the 260s showed up....front or back.. If its a good bumper, list on ebay if not what ya want. David
  23. Jayru, I to have a 52,000 mile 240z engine from my hybridz project from several years back. I've been sliding this engine around the garage for 5 years now....holding off pulling the rods out in case someone shows up needing a good 240 motor. With all the 280 engines floating around, not much market for a stock 240...other then a cheap alternative to blown engine. david
  24. Carl, Could you please direct me to this car? Direct info to: Volgolf@aol.com David Spillman

HI SuperDave, I was surprised at the remarks made concerning $$$, and being no business racing with out mucho $$$$ There are a few that can come accross smug on ITouring.., and a very few in person even....I get to meet very few of the people at the track simply because I have chosen the highest maintenence car for SCCA racing the Z.....but Our Z still finishes in front of the "P" cars!!!! The 325s are top dog now, but I for 1 can't justify a $40,000 car for a chance for a trophy...we may not have "THE" car to have now, but the zdrivers are IMO the class of the field!!! david
