1. CO, I did a little autopsy and carefully removed the plastic cap from my original thermistor. It looks like a very simple single wire resistance, and it was broken off the bottom (pic below) . I found no resistance in removal of the plastic cap and the end of the wire is bent up slightly and seems melted, so I'm quite sure I didn't brake removing the cap. I had also measured resistance with my dvm before removing the cap and got 0.0 Ohms reading. There are clear numbers on the side (see pics) and in contrast to the Z Car Depot unit, the 3 holes on the bottom are a bit larger in diameter, there are 2 additional holes on the sides, and the hole on the plastic cap is also larger. All the holes in the can are screened.Mark Maras suggested that perhaps the small holes on the top of the Z Car Depot unit weren't allowing air to escape and impeding fluid from rushing into the can from below when submersed. Before disassembly I experimented by comparatively dunking both thermistors in a clear glass container full of water. You could see air bubbles escaping readily from the top of the original unit as it went in. Not so with the ZCD thermistor. I had to shake it and tap it so air would escape. This validates Mark Mara's observation and what you and Dave had suspected at times, that maybe fuel wasn't getting inside the can properly. Please refer to one of my previous posts (# 82) for pics of the ZCD thermistor details. Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk
2. It was with sad reluctance that I made the decision to cancel my ZCON hotel reservation last week. TN is one of the states seeing a marked increase in COVID-19 cases and Nashville has been particularly noted on some newscasts. This situation is not going to magically disappear in the next 6 weeks and I am very much in the susceptible age group. Even if I went to the event, I would then have to quarantine myself away from my home for a couple of weeks to ensure I did not bring the virus home to my wife who has an autoimmune condition. As an original owner, this 50th anniversary meeting holds a lot of significance to me but I cannot allow that to seriously jeopardize my health and that of my family. I will dearly miss meeting up with old friends and getting introduced to new ones from this great site. For those of you who move forward with plans to attend ZCON, I pray that you remain safe. I will have to "enjoy" the event vicariously thru your reports and photos.
3. That is a piece of bearing cage on the drain plug magnet. Most probably from the counter shaft (sometimes called cluster shaft) bearing in the adapter plate. If you want to rebuild the transmission, I would strongly advise dismantling it first to asses the condition. A rebuild kit could be enough to restore it to good working condition, but it might have a lot of other damage where a replacement transmission would be the better option. If you want a parts list, see link in downloads section.
4. The original reference to Darmok is from a Star Trek episode where they encountered a race that always spoke in metaphor. In that situation, you can understand the WORDS, but they really mean nothing unless you have a shared past experience. For example, you could ask "How is the weather?", and I could answer "Dave WM and Captain O riding in the Z." Haha!!!
5. Hey Zed, Ken’s transmission conversion came from my 78 280. I am doing the manual conversion on mine. I provided everything for his conversion directly off of my car. The trans package was a complete set.
6. I agree. I miss the face to face catch up time!

I registered, but I'm not going. If someone sees Datsun printed masks, get me a couple! Even better, a Datsun logo face mask signed by John Morton. I would pay for that.
8. It's so close to me and I am torn as whether or not to go, even if not for the whole week. I don't consider that my Z is competition for trophies so that part doesn't even matter, but missing the face to face with everyone is a let down for me personally. I would still like to go and hope to find a way. Like most of you I have literally bled for my Z, but I'm not ready to give up breathing for it or spreading that chance to my family. I hope conditions change for the better between now and then.
9. Makes a lot of sense Jim. Totally understandable. I too have been coming to the same conclusion. Will be discussing it when the other Jim in Bentonville returns from his latest work adventure. Us Jim's need to stick together.

As long as it's not cancelled, I will be there.
11. Thanks for the feedback guys . I think I’m going to run it and acquire all the bits to redo the rear bearings . Maybe a winter project .
12. Yeah yeah.. Last week i got out of the car and hurt my back really bad.. went to the doctor and he told me i have a hernia... It's véry painfull.. i barely can walk.. I wanted to make a set of pic's of the finished car.. (inside and out) but i'm at the moment more or less tied to my chair and bed.. (A lot of #%&^$#*^%$...GRrrrrr..) 13. ZCON is still a go as far as I know. Chris Karl posted a few times on Facebook this past weekend when he and some of his ZCON team were in Nashville locking things down. Not exactly sure how they are going to deal with the big crowds, especially at the opening and closing banquets, but I understand they have a plan. If I hear anything else I'll try and provide an update here. Mike.
