As per my original post to that subject on this thread, I was responding to a poster on the Bring-a-Trailer auction comments section (for the car we have been discussing here) who made some strange claims about Katayama. Here's a reminder of what he wrote: " Mr. Yutaka Katayama (RIP) must be quite honored that his design has such a devoted fan base with so much knowledge. On another level, I can only surmise that first and foremost he designed this car with the driving experience in mind. I’d love to hear more stories from the experienced about the well thought out the driving position is, how smooth the sweet 6 is at revs, how compliant the suspension (IRS) is over poor roads, the fluid throw of the shifts, and so on. No doubt he dedicated countless hours designing these tactile elements into that pretty styling exercise. These are what make this car so very special. I’d love to read more about the experience." See? As you will know, in 1998 Yutaka Katayama was inducted into the 'Automotive Hall Of Fame'. His Automotive Hall Of Fame biography contains the following sentence: "Shunning conventional wisdom, he created and promoted cars and trucks designed for a new type of consumer". Do you believe that Katayama "created" - in any practical sense of the word - any of the products that NMC USA was selling? You appear to agree with me that he did not, but there are many people - apparently even in the Automotive Hall of Fame - who clearly believe that he did. There are many more examples of this 'out there' both in print and online. I'm wondering if you consider Katayama's input/feedback to be the reason for the North American market variant HLS30Us being equipped with Warner synchro 4-speed transmissions, 3.364:1 ratio diffs, soft springing and damping, slow steering ratios and less of the bells and whistles seen in other market variants? Was Katayama responsible for making the North American market Zs less sporty than others, or was that out of his control? If it was out of his control, is his much-vaunted influence being overstated? Genuine questions. Yes, Katayama was requesting more power (mostly via bigger displacement) but so were any number of others within Nissan, within their Japanese competition - Toyota and Honda for example - and within their customer base in Japan. It was inevitable, and it was coming whether Katayama had been calling for it or not. Again, Katayama being credited with something that already had its own impetus and trajectory. What were the "anemic tin boxes" you mention? Is this not a conflation of earlier stories regarding the likes of the 210-series Bluebird? You can see the same impetus with the 310 and 410-series cars pointing the way forward to the 510 and beyond, and the SP/SR roadsters being successful enough in their own right as Nissan's sports car to be superseded by a new coupe when international safety regulations threatened the death of open-top sports cars. Where exactly was Katayama's influence a KEY factor here? Throwaway Iines there. Look, if I point out that The Beatles didn't write 'Twist and Shout' or that the Rolling Stones didn't write 'Little Red Rooster', it doesn't mean I'm dissing the Beatles or the Stones. They were both great in their own right (and write...) but creative credit should go where it is due. Bert Berns and Willie Dixon respectively, right? I want to assure you that I think of Yutaka Katayama as a major figure in Nissan - and Japan's - history and, as I've pointed out up-thread, I am not attempting to take away any credit that he rightly deserved for achievements that he was rightly credited with. In setting up the NMC USA dealer network (following Volkswagen's model) along with Soichi Kawazoe and others, and very much being the 'face' of Nissan in the USA at such a crucial time, he deserves the plaudits. But he is often credited with the work of others, or with things that would be happening anyway, and that is wrong.

Some reporters are still trying to get him to admit his exaggerations. "More tests than any country". It's just a waste of time. But, I think that he really might not even understand what "per capita" means. He had an easy clear answer, along your lines, about testing in the hotspots at a high rate. It would have been a good reasonable answer. But he fumbled on even saying the term "per capita". I don't think that he understands. Anyway. They're trying to change the man. He's in his 70's. Not going to happen.

So, I arrived in Panama this AM (8am). The airport is completely closed to passenger travel. The airport was a ghost town. We only heard one other aircraft on the radio between Tennessee and Panama (a Delta flight over Atlanta). It was so odd and the sights here are odd too. Roads complexly empty. It’s like something from a bad movie. We had our temps taken upon landing and were told we couldn’t leave our hotel room once we check in. I spent 15 mins sanitizing the jet with my gloves on. The other pilot seemed to have a lower concern but was happy with my cleaning job. I find out 1 hr into the flight that his daughter vacated NYC a few days ago to escape the virus lockdown. She’s a waitress in Manhattan and student. I’m like, “you’ve got to be kidding me”, I’m stuck with this guy for about 8 hrs total in this cockpit for the next two flights! I’ve been neurotic about keeping my hands clean but not touching your face for 4 hrs is almost impossible, it’s a subconscious action most of the time. So I’m trapped in this hotel now. Ugh! Cleaned and painted the front grill. Also, got a new fuel pump and installed that. Looks much nicer and closer to the original than the standard auto part fuel pump. I had an old original style pump that I removed the screws and fittings from and sent out with the last batch of plating parts. I will probably swap out the clear zinc fasteners and fitting for the yellow zinc parts once they come back from the plating shop just to get a bit closer to the original look.

My restoration is finally finished. Now sitting in the show room at Robert's Automotive in Springfield, Illinois. 1981 280ZX Grand Luxury Edition, Manufactured September 1980. I drove it off the car lot on January 12, 1981. Features: Engine rebuild, original paint, original carpet and seats, re-upolstered interior and headliner, re-plated cadmium engine parts and restored wheels. I haven't driven it for almost 24 years. Original miles 25,536 and I have all documentation to back that up. I paid the ultimate price for NOT driving it - an entire engine rebuild. Everything works except the status display in the center of the instrument cluster. (See photo) Need to figure how to trouble shoot the status display. Needless to say I'm excited. I will be able to take it home before the end of next week. Still needs to have the air conditioning system re-charged.

Trump is talking now and it seems like the new focus is talking about the private companies that are making products. One is the unproven therapeutics. Sandoz and others. Ford, General Electric Healthcare, General Motors, Honeywell, Jockey, the MyPillow guy, Proctor & Gamble, Bringing the company presidents up to speak. The MyPillow guy is the first speaker. He sounds just like his commercials. CRAZY! Lots of praising of each other. President thanks the FDA, FDA thanks the President. The FDA is now making approvals based on the President's requests. Not their own expertise. All of the companies making ventilators will be sending them to foreign companies. It's a business venture. Not much mention of the States. Lots of focus on sending medical equipment to Italy. I've realized that Trump is just a really weird dude. Forget about his motives, he's just a strange strange person.

I think a shutter would be to complicated.. maybe just a small bulb or LED per layer? It has a 10 wire connector with 8 wires, 2 of them for the on-switch (they go separate to the connector) so there could be 5 signs to be lit.. There can be lights build in on top and from the right.. ( as you can see in pic 1of4) And… NO, i'm not going to open this unit! hahaha.. Maybe one day i need it for my own first edition slick roof 280zx..

Cool! So it's a light pipe! I was completely wrong. Not EL at all! You shine the light on the edge of the glass and it will refract when it hits the obstacles (the dots). You see the dots because of that. So how does it switch between the different displays? Some kind of small slit shutter between the bulb and the layers? Shutter moves across the different layers somehow?

Don't guess. Test. Disconnect all of the injectors and the CSV and see if they still allow fuel through. Best to do that test with a pressure gauge, or by removing all of them and watching for leaks. Or disconnect the ECU and see if they leak. Why did you replace the injectors and CSV?

I've been off for a week now so my daily hygiene has dropped off dramatically. I do brush my teeth twice a day whether they need it or not. Cleaned and painted the CV shafts this weekend. I painted them with 'aluminum' spray paint which I think may be a bit too shiny. May re-do this in flat aluminum.

I put rivnuts in the doors so I won't have that issue. Everything tightens down from the exterior of the door

Now i wanted to find out what it is.. i looked if i got such a thing in my warehouse.. AND... YEP! got one! It say's: STANLEY on the back.. It looks like there is a little lightbulb in the right side of the display.. and the display is build out of layers of glass of some sort.. with small dots of glass on them.. Just by shining some light on the specific plate the sign gets visable.. What a cool technology! There are .. i took a good look in there .. around 20 plates of glass or ( i suspect) plexiglass in there, some have the pixels others are just dividers.. STOP is in front, then the headlight sign and OK comes next.. for as far i can see, behind those is the rest of the signs. By using a (colored) filter inbetween the lightbulb and the sign, these can light up in different colors!

@dutchzcarguy Well just the fact that it's multi-color unfortunately makes the system more complicated. So I've never seen one of these with my own two eyes, but simply from that era in time, the technology is probably vacuum fluorescent or plasma. Although it could be nixie-tube (neon) as you mentioned before. But I'm not sure if you can do multi-color with cold cathode like that.. My guess is that it it's VF. So I punched that part number you mentioned into the web and found one on ebay: And you're right. Could be a problem with the little display module itself in the dash cluster, or it could be a problem with the control module. Or any of the associated connections that make the system work.

Just incredible.....maybe going to be the most impressive Nissan in the country. This will bring a new interest in the Z31!

Cliff, I hope you’re wrong but I’m afraid you’re right. There is a strange feeling in the air. You all need to be ready for the worst. Think about your family’s security and being hunkered down big time. This virus is so easily spread and healthy people are dying in days, not weeks. We need a vaccine fast or else it will be ugly and will for sure impact people you love and care about. I’m not even talking about the economic disaster we have to dig out of. It’s not gonna be a fun summer. BTW, I don’t believe the warmer weather is going to make a difference. It’s 80deg here. My first trip- 1 case first week of March. Second week here 40 cases.
