[2017] What Did You Do To/with Your Z Today?
Not what I did today, but what I'll will be doing tomorrow. Taking HLS30-23305 to Westminster, Co to have my Mikuni's dyno tuned by Jeff Winter, http://rallye-sport.com/. I obtained the Mikuni's from Madkaw this winter and finally got them installed. Now ready to get them tuned by a pro. Looking forward to the drive tomorrow3 points

#187 on BAT
3 pointsI don't think the rust is awful but there is a lot of work to do. I see this car as comparable to my projects, 26th and 27th. I'm marveling at the bent floors. Wow! I wonder if I could ask the guy on BAT to contact me here? I'm 26th-Z on BAT. This car is being discussed on Bookfaced from Datsun Parts and Needs. Big comments on the value of low VIN cars. I think I'm going to be surprised with the bid on 187th. There's only so much room on the purchase price vs. the restoration costs and value afterwards. I still think I'm on track with escalating values to have two cars worth what I have in them, but we'll see. Either way, a restoration on a car like 187th is going to be big bucks.3 points

Fluctuating Gauges 240z
2 pointsI have a 1972 z that sat in my garage for 25 years. ( I know! Why?) Last year I got it running and driving. The problem I developed with my gauges was that when power was first applied at startup, the fuel gauge would respond then slowly drop back to E. I could not find anything wrong with the sending units. After taking apart the gauges I found that there was a poor connection between the tiny wires that heat up and make the gauges register and the studs that connect to those wires. The easy fix was to clean the contact points between the stud and the tiny wires, then soldered them together. Hope this is helpful anyone with similar problems. I soldered the fuel, oil and temperature connections and they all work perfectly. See picture. Phil Smith2 points

Nissan to start producing classic parts
I just got this post from 240z 260z 280z lovers on FB. This could be interesting if S30 parts are included. https://www.carthrottle.com/post/nissan-is-restarting-official-production-of-skyline-spares/1 point

Vapor lock questions for the hotter climate guys
This has been an ongoing problem for a long time and I don't remember all of the remedies you've tried other than fuel pump and fuel lines, so excuse me if you've already tried what follows. Have you tried letting the Z idle in a shaded spot with the hood open all the way and an external fan blowing down on the carbs to push heat build up away and then revving the engine when it gets to operating temperature to see if it stumbles? That could confirm or eliminate the fuel percolation aspect. Have you connected with any of the Nissan clubs in Panama? Dennis1 point

When and Where did You get yours?
In 2014 I was back on the hunt for a nice 240z ever since I sold my lime green '72 240z several months prior. In June I saw a Craigslist ad in Dallas for a 1971 series-1 240z. It was the color I wanted (silver), had already had the entire suspension rebuilt and detailed along with the engine, and it was pretty much ready to be enjoyed by its new owner. Asking price was $10,000. Given all that was done I thought this was fair as long as it was 100% what was described and luckily my wife thought the same. I called the seller and expressed that I want it, I am serious, and I will be there on Saturday morning which was 2 or 3 days away with cash. The seller was Dave, owner of Dallas Car Care, and really nice to deal with and even though I offered a deposit he said one was not needed. I told him I plan to drive it back home so I bought insurance for it, sent him a copy of my insurance card, and he inspected it and placed a sticker on it so it was legal. When we got there early on Saturday morning we looked it over and took it for a test drive. On the drive I could tell the brakes were really spongy so when we got back Dave put it on the lift so we could see under it. To my surprise 3 of the 4 flexible brake hoses were dripping brake fluid. This was not the end of the world as it is something I could fix at my mom's house once I got the car. We went to his office and I offered $9500 since it needed the brake hoses done and he refused stating its $10K firm as he had a line of other buyers after me. I went back and talked about it with my wife and felt really stuck. I wanted the car but could not bring myself to pay full price and immediately have to do work to it. I talked to Dave and offered $9500 again, put the cash on his desk and I said it would be the full $10K if he fixed the brake hoses today and I would come back. To my surprise he turned it down so I left. On Monday before I went and put the cash back in the bank over my lunch hour I called Dave to see if one of the other buyers purchased the car since the Craigslist ad was still up. He told me everyone else had either made low ball offers, had some car to sell first or some other story. I told him my offer still stands and he countered with agreeing to the $9500 and fixing the brake hoses. So I made the trip back up the following weekend, this time just by myself as my wife had an commitment to keep. We put the car back on the lift and I confirmed everything looked good, handed over $9500 cash, and headed home. And like Zed above, I have been spending money on it ever since! To be fair, I have also driven it more than any other classic/toy car I have ever owned. In my book, more drive time and less wrench time = more fun. Check out the links in my signature to see more about the car and other adventures with it.1 point

Phil, you can't just leave us hanging! Tell us how you did it, please. I would love to be able to do that changeover with modern fuses. Pics, please. Cheers, Mike1 point

1973 240Z Value
1 pointHello montezuma, i am having with the mechanic that is giving it a once over if it had the original flat top carbs. While it's with the mechanic he will take photos of the underside of the car while it's on the lift getting all the facts and details together so I can come up with a fair price1 point

No flashers or turn signals
1 pointHey, Jai had the periodic dimming of gauge lights recently with her Redbird and after looking at the diagram I realize that a short after the flasher, or at the Hazard switch on its flasher circuit, could cause the flasher to actuate without being connected to any lights and without burning the link, because of the flasher resistance.. What do y'all think of that? I'm not sure where the turn signal flasher is but it might have the same possibility.1 point

#187 on BAT
1 pointThis one only went to 11K on BAT then to 18k on Ebay to a deadbeat: http://bringatrailer.com/listing/1970-datsun-240z-7/ I agree with Zedyone_kenobi, if the auction does not have the right bidders it is a dud. The car is not the problem.1 point

I went skiing with friends in spring 85 an saw the 72 on the side of the road for sale for 6000. It was the first i have ever seen (43 where sold in switzerland). The WE later it was mine with a bankloan (first and last) on my back. Payd it back, took it apart putt all parts in a garage and restored it 27 years later finished last year. Drive it now every day and fell back in love with it.1 point

[2017] What Did You Do To/with Your Z Today?
Well it finally got warm enough today to go back and finish the front springs. These are actually softer than what was on the car. I think I will like these much better. No more loose fillings in my teeth.1 point

[2017] What Did You Do To/with Your Z Today?
Went to a local car show today. Over 400 cars and trucks, some pretty amazing vehicles. Only two classes for imports: pre-1970 & 1970 and later. I pulled a second place award behind a 2017 Holden Commodore (brand new car). I guess you could say we bracketed the class at the extreme ends. Extremely windy, temp in the low 80's, great show and lots of great company.1 point
