New sensor and still at 3/4 as shown. I guess its time to purchase a heat gun so i can point it directly at the engine and determine the real temp. If gauge is good and sensor was replaced what next?

My '72 has ran on the right leg of M in TEMP since the day I bougt it. I thought that was hot. Rebuilt the motor and it still reads on the right side of M in TEMP.

You have complained about this for as long as I can remember yet you are still driving this car. It wouldn't be running today if that gauge reading was a factor in your cars health.

Put a mechanical gauge under the hood if you want an accurate reading.

Or ignore it and operate on the principle that pointing right before the leg of the "P" is normal operating temperature...

Google mechanical vs electrical temp sending units. You are going to have to be creative and research the components necessary to install it temporarily in the thermostat housing.

There it is. Falls right on the M. RPMs sometimes drops and then rises.

If it were me, I'd pull out that coolant sensor (still attached to the wire), heat it to 185 degrees exactly and then look at the Temp Gauge and see if it was right on the middle mark.

I think some gauges are off a little, I've read many owners that say their needle is more to the right, as in hot when they really aren't.

Here's mine sitting in the garage without air flow other than what the fan pulls through the radiator. Thermostat is open, car idling and the temp gauge is on the right leg of the M in the word TEMP on the inside gauge. 1972 240Z with a Nissan 180F thermostat.

Id like to know why after several minutes idling in traffic rpm fall from 900 to 500 rpm and then rises back randomly

Does this coincide with A/C compressor engage / disengage?
