Victor, Thanks for posting the new pic. I am still doing research on which decal was for which vin#. Was this decal, above, just for the series 11 cars up through 73? Any info you may in your files would be a big help. My decal for the early, 69 - 71 series 1 cars is nearing completion. Hoping for a good color match and looking for the best way to emboss the numbers at this point. Once again, if anyone here would like to tell me what the numbers in the blank spaces on your decal are, along with the vin # of your car, it would be a great help to me in making this decal as accurate as possible for those interested in having one. Well, I am making progress in reproducing this master vac decal. I just took a look at a first draft of the decal and have submitted minor changes. Victor, in post # 5, above, was kind enought to post two pictures. The larger bottom picture is the decal that I am doing. The upper, smaller picture, is of a decal which has a different format. It would be very helpful if all who are interested in one of these decals, and even those who are not, give me some information on the decal if one is presently on your car. In order to make these decals as authentic as possible, I would like to know what numbers, both black print and embossed are on your decals in the three spaces provided, along with the vin # of your car. This will help me associate the correct numbering with the vintage of the car. Also, tell me which of the two decals pictured in Victors post # 5 above is on your car. If you could take the time to do this, it would be a great help. I had assumed that there was only one format for this decal, but if Victor is correct, the format may have changed in late '71 and on for series 2 cars. RickX, You have a short-hand way of expressing yourself, which, I believe, some of us are trying to decipher, and may have caused a little frustration for others in the attempt. I am not trying to be critical, and it is good to hear your perspective, and thought on your experiences with the ebay process. I am really enjoying this discussion which lends itself to kind of a free hand expression to thoughts we all have, and gives greater creditabililty and affirmation to our choice of cars. We would all like to believe, and are infatuated with the thought, that our car of choice has value and collectability yet to be achieved. This ground breaking, wonderful, little sport coupe deserves the broader attention of serious collectors, and from some things mentioned in this discussion, I believe that serious attention is not far away. If, and this has been considered by some, a Concours event were to be created, with well defined criteria for judging, the original Datsun 240Z would then be elevated to, and capture the attention of the serious collector world. This would provide a yard stick, similarly used by Corvette collectors, by which to more easily define truly great originals, or restorations. I know that I am rambling, but just had to voice an opinion from one who has enjoyed the same 240Z for almost 36 years.

I've been watching this auction, also. I have a NOS set, three of whch are still sealed in brown Nissan paper and plastic and have yet to see the light of day for the last 35 years. I am fantisizing what these would fetch, if I were to sell them, which I won't. As values continue to rise on these rare parts, so goes the value of our preciously cared for cars. Ya gotta love it. Although I did not know Carl personally, I think we can all agree that we knew, well, what a fine, sincere, person he was through his contributions to this site. When Carl stopped contributing to this forum on a regular basis, many expressed concerns for his well being, and tributes to what he has meant to this club. Rick, I, too, am really feeling badly for you. I can only imagine how I would feel if I had to sell my early 1/71 car. This is my two cents. Don't know your situation, but if it is workable, why not consider taking the car to Scottsdale next January to Barrett Jackson auction. In the mean time, enjoy it a little while longer by putting it back to as stock as possible, and contact the auction company to get there input. You may get a surprising price in this environment. It would also set a time certain for getting rid of the car, and give you the time in which your fortunes may take a turn for the better, which may not necessitate to the sale of your car. New opportunities have a way of presenting themselves when least expected. Take your time. Dan

Chris, thanks for a real good summary of the contenders in stock 240 class. that, along with Kats detail pictures gives me a good feel for the show. I had heard that Bob had done quite a bit of work on his orange center fold car, new carpet, etc., so I am sure it showed well. As to judging, your emphasis, with which I totally agree, is super clean, no dust, etc. How about patena? Would an exhaust manifold, after being restored but not powder coated, or painted with hi-temp paint, and developes that reddish, brown patena from temp exposure, suffer in judging, or be a creditable, acceptable mark of originality? Great pictures, Kats. Did you take any more detail pictures of those top three cars? I really hope that when my car is finished to my satisfaction as to originality, I can make it to the next national show, and we may have the opportunity to get together, once again. Your web site and car sets the standard for all of us who aspire for total originality. Go to your auto paint supply house and get a box of rope calk. Roll out strings as thin as you want to attach the moisture barrier. Do not cover the drain holes at bottom of door frame. This calk stays pliable and will not dry out. Hope this helps.

Thanks for following up on this post, Chris. I know that I missed a good show. Did you see, or judge, the stock 240 class cars? If so, what was the detail quality like? What surprised you most about the originality detail work on these cars? Did you see the class winner; if so, what was your overall impression of this car? Were there any good examples of stock unrestored, and restored frame up 240 cars? Were any of the stock 240 z Gold Medallion winners? Geez, I really needed to be there! Dan

This site has been pretty quiet about the 2006 National Convention. Did anyone attend? 26th-z, are you out there, did you judge at the show, have any pictures you can share? It was a pretty big downer when I realized that I wouldn't be able to attend. Still trying to make my '71 perfect for stock competition. It may be too soon after the convention, but it would be great to seen some good pics of the show. Dan

Another thought. I don't have my Z with me, right now, but why don't you just drop the A/C evaporator as it is bolted to the firewall with either 3 or 4 machine screws. Then remove the blower motor. This is fairly simple. You will, then have clear access to to hoses and heater box. Just a thought. Dan

I believe that the car was sold for an unknown price, and the seller cancelled the auction after selling the car. We really don't know what he sold this car for. I guess he accepted an offer that he couldn't refuse.

These rubber end caps were not installed on my 1/71 series 1 car when I purchased it new from the dealer, FWIW.
