  1. I've never used a Roadster tranny on a Z before. It must be the same dimensions as the Z.
  2. You will need a 280z clutch collar to go with your 280z clutch if that's not what you are currently running. Everything else should be the same including the throw out bearing.
  3. Having been lucky enough to have made the right choice to purchase a Z in 1970 after seeing John Morton burn up the track at Road Atlanta, I can perfectly attest to the fact that not long after the introduction, people's attention was more appealingly focused on the slightly modified cars that made you think you WERE John Morton. Acceptable mods in the Atlanta market were American dish wheels, Minilite mags or the four spoke Americans libre's........ front and rear BRE spoilers, Mullholland lowering springs, 2 1/2 inch exhaust with a Corvair turbo-charged muffler. When one of these slightly properly altered cars passed you on I 85, it made your heart pump. Skinny wheels and a car that sat high off the road (with smog pumps still installed) didn't do it for me........stock class Z's are pretty......but to fully enjoy my Z's you need that little extra!
  4. You ought to kick yourself Carl......but you know she's got a good home.Everything is cleaning up almost like new. I started compounding under the hood......amazing.....it looks like new. It'll still take $12,000.00 to $15,000.00 to get her perfect, but having absolutely no rust let's you start from the 45 yard line.
  5. :laugh:Silver is a beautiful color on a Z...........it's much easier to keep the original color. If you're going to take the time to complete the job as mentioned above..... go for it. Otherwise save time and money keeping it original. Go find a white car to add to the silver car and impress the wife.
  6. More progress.....the radiator was boiled out, repainted, then Banzai stickers were applied. The digital camera is great for getting wires reconnected as they should be. Bye, bye auto shifter. I'm really liking this color......
  7. I screw something up on almost every engine I build...........
  8. When they ground the cam, did they put the plug in the rear of the cam?
  9. Why not try to put Redatt (or whatever his name is) out of business! Sorry to hear of your misfortunes.......good luck.
  10. New stuff for the new Z.......
  11. I like Borla mufflers..........not too loud, but a nice throaty sound.
  12. If you have a bent valve in a cylinder, it'll probably read "0".
  13. You have bent some valves. If the car runs at higher rpm's but dies under say....2500 rpm, it is an indication that you have several bent valves. Run a compression check to confirm this.
  14. Absolutely......a poll is a poll.....obviously most on this forum don't like motors other than the L series in a Z car.......at least according to Will's poll. We're not arguing with what others like.....just telling you what we like!
  15. Zedy.....You're engine is absolutely beautiful!
  16. The sound of the inline 6 L series motor wound up on any straight on any race track is an incredible sound......music to my ears. When I hear a V8 on the same straight, I expect to see a Cobra, a Corvette or a Mustang. IMO, that sound is what makes a Z a Z. I'll never forget the first time I heard (and saw) Morton and Sharp coming down the hill to the Esses at Road Atlanta. It's what makes a Z a Z............as it should be! IMHO
  17. Mally....The blue is awesome........I restored a 67 912 about 10 years ago.....brings back memories.
  18. If you bead blast it to metal.....then apply. Not nearly as good as ceramic coating, but that's $150.00.
  19. Jonathan.....I bead blast each item......I acid etch prime the front cover and valve cover.....I then spray with VHT aluminum paint. All painted parts such as the pulley, alternator bracket, motor mounts etc. Are bead blasted, acid etch primered, then painted with Datsun Blue spray paint from Classic Datsun or other correct colors. I use new thermostat housing, cover etc. The best part is installing all these like new parts with new hardware from Datsun Spirit. It makes for a nice looking finished product.
  20. A little more progress...........Eiji's bolt kit and Z Therapy quality work make for a nice looking motor.
  21. Mine is a transition 72.......which mount would it use Carl? G
  22. Does anyone know if you can use an auto transmission cross member on a manual tranny?
  23. Diseazd replied to grantf's topic in Help Me !!
Correct......and the water inlet and thermostat housing to head and cover gaskets, mechanical fuel pump, distributor gasket, manifold gasket and carb gaskets.
  24. Diseazd replied to grantf's topic in Help Me !!
I put the front cover gaskets on dry as well as the water pump....."0" problems. I do use a little hardening "form a gasket" on the top edges where the front cover gasket fits against the head gasket.
  25. This is a great thread.........keep us updated. You're doing it right.....NICE WORK!
