Restoration of BringaTrailer 240z - HLS30-35883
I switched out the wafers in the NOS hatch lock to match the new keys and installed the lock in the hatch panel. These hatch locks start showing wear when the chrome on the sleeve gets thin from rubbing during operation. I am happy to have this as a new part! I decided to work on the air cleaner this evening. This was one of the first parts that I stripped, primed and painted a few years ago. Tonight, I re-glued the inner rubber strips. I used the same contact adhesive I have been using for everything. I have not made much progress in the last couple of weeks; however, I did get the bumpers and the seat belts shipped off finally. Turn around time for both is many weeks, so I am glad to cross that off the list. With any luck, I would think I could be able to finish the car by the end of July - right at six years from when I brought it home.4 points

few exciting updates The body shop contacted me and asked if I wanted to bring all the smaller parts in and they could get a headstart on a few things when they had gaps to fill. So I dropped the bonnet, rear hatch, front fenders, cowl panel and headlight buckets off to them. One of their panel beaters is a hardcore datsun fan so he couldn't help himself but make a start immediately. Certainly works in my favour! Pretty happy to see some sort of progress! I ended up ordering the spare wheel tub and lower front valance from resurrected classics, my tub had many non factory holes and the lower valance panels all came back a dogs breakfast from the blasters. My body shop advised that if there are decent reproductions it will be more cost effective to buy them instead of them fixing my mangle panels. Also ended up taking a gamble on resurrected classics new stainless yellow zinc plated bolt kit. I'm pretty impressed with how comprehensive it is, basically every fastener besides the suspension bolts. Everything was very well labelled, only downside i see is you are paying for some fasteners you dont need as they include 260z & 280z fasteners. Now to compare them to stock versions.... Also ordered the resurrected classic doors, mine were cooked and these will save me a tonne of money!3 points

The sleeve around the lock tumbler is made of "pot metal" and is chrome plated. The movement in and out to open the hatch slowly wears through the chrome plating. As you can see in this picture, the chrome has worn away, exposing the copper layer beneath in a couple of areas. Polishing will not revive the uniform silver appearance. Additionally, because it is a soft metal, it wears relatively quickly. And that is significant, because the inside of this sleeve is what the tumblers work with for correct operation of the lock. The result is that many keys will work on this lock when only one used to. 🙂2 points

Put in the new replacement sender yesterday, since the rains hadn't started yet. I reused the factory o-ring as it is more substantial. Had to remake the short harness. I found that when I filled the tank after, I will have to remove & adjust the arm, as it doesn't register at the full mark. Made sure notch aligned with alignment tab.2 points

@AZ-240z Depending of course on whether you have the time and interest, a photo essay of the details of your car's engine compartment would be a great topic for a separate thread (maybe in the 'Resources' section?) It would certainly be a nice reference piece for other restorers.2 points

Its been a while gents. I hope you're all well and been driving those cars of yours. Speaking to the panel shop they are looking at Q3 to get the car in, I need to get my arse in gear and start sorting the bits they'll eventually need to fit up panels, hood/hatch/door hinges, bolts for fenders etc and not to mention the few panels I haven't already bought. So I pulled the trigger and bought the KFVJDM rear quarters, it hurt a lot to see the total price shipped, i also got slugged with import duties, however its the first time i have been stung and I've brought in thousands of dollars worth of parts so my number had to come up eventually. arrived all safe with no visible damage besides some scratches to that funky green paint. I have to say they don't use much foam or bubble wrap to protect the panels if at all. If you remember my rear hatch is pretty beat up so I thought Id get their lower rear hatch panel as well, at first glance it looks a bit off in places but hopefully it works well.2 points

2 pointsYou should be able to pull the plugs and get a view of the piston tops. Won't tell you what your compression numbers should be, but at least you will know if the pistons are dished or flat topped.2 points

Can I calculate lash pad size from change in lobe base circle?
Isky recommends .175 inch lash pads for the Stage III .490 lift camshaft. I always center the wipes and have found .160 to .170 inch pads work with the Stage III cams.2 points

Thanks for the very much appreciated compliments inline6. The valve cover and carb dome finishes are OEM. And Captain, I assume the “nits” were directed at my picture. The fuel pump, see attached pic, is indeed a NOS Nikki pump, and I also included a pic of the master cylinders. inline, not trying to hijack space as the work you have done on your car is truly amazing. Dave W 1971/240Z rebuild
1 pointIt was March 14th when I posted that message. Today I got a call from the Ministry of Transport Ontario saying I own the car again! The paperwork to have it transferred back to me disappeared twice in the depths of MTO, but good eventually triumphed over bureaucracy. I wasted no time getting insurance on the car, and picking up the new ownership papers and license plates. We're now one exhaust system and a signature on a Vehicle Condition Report away from being on the road! MTO doesn't require the Vehicle Condition Report - they returned the car to "fit" condition, because that's the state it was in when transferred to the wrecker. My insurance company needs the form completed before they can put collision coverage on it.1 point

Japanese RHD HS30 variations 70-74
The three models in the photo I posted (it is a page from the October 1971 'Z-4' #272 Nissan Service Shuho model introduction booklet) are the three that I have been talking about; the 'HS30-S' Fairlady 240Z'/'HZS'/'HZ-Standard' model is the one on the bottom. It had the L24 engine the same as the other two models above it, and is implicitly included in the "2,600" conjectural figure from the graphic that we have been discussing.1 point
