    Wow Galaxybj, I know that road very well. I guess all things considered, I'm glad to read it was a single vehicle accident. Somehow, I find it easier to stomach knowing he was having fun at the limit rather than getting hit by a distracted driver.

    I'm absolutely sick about this. Tears and everything. John was the most kind, level-headed, thoughtful, smart guy I ever knew. His Z and car posts, his FB posts were always top notch and human. My condolences to his family and friends.

  6. Thanks for the input guys. I know something would have to be done about the black rubber bumper ends to shorten or remount them accordingly. At this stage I'm just wondering what it would look like. Zed Head, that last post you sent me to has some good stuff in it. Thanks for that one. I did a little searching here for the topic and came up blank. I found numerous threads at zcar.com about the topic, but all of them were for people who installed 240 bumpers, So if I can figure out how to reattach an attachment from a previous thread, here's what the front of a 77-78 can look like with the stock bumper pulled in closer to the body. I like the look: And here's a pic of the back. Looks like not only did he take out the accordion ribs from the bumper ends, but he also sawed off and smoothed the bumperettes:
  7. The breakup/sputtering at 4K+ came back the other night. Since this is a high compression build I put in 7 heat range plugs when I installed it. On a total guess I pulled the old 6 heat range plugs from the old engine and installed them last night. Breakup/sputtering gone! Game on!

  9. Finished the one I was dreading the most: the vent tank cover. The PO started breaking it in the past, and I finished the job when I removed it last year, so did more of the ABS cement and fiberglass to repair it, and patched up a few other holes and cracks at the same time. Since it's getting wrapped and I'm not too concerned about what the panel looks like, I also wanted to test a restoration option: acetone. It brought back the shine and color to the shock tower trim, and did the same on the backs of some plastic panels. I did a fast, light wipe of the panel with a paper towel that was soaked with acetone. The results were surprisingly good. I don't know if it'll hold up over time, but for anyone looking for a super fast, easy fix, it's something that might be worth considering. Wrapping was a tough job. 4+ hours for the whole thing. I ended up cutting 3 seams into it but tried to keep them in areas that aren't easy to see; someone who's better at this could probably do it without cutting. There's also some wrinkles that I wasn't able to get out but those too should be in hard-to-see places. The face of the panel looks pretty good, though! Hopefully I can get it back in the car easier than it came out.
  10. Get it running BEFORE the bills start coming in and drive it, You'll have a daily source of joy (healing) around while you're getting thru these tough times and the value for your running Z will keep rising at the same time. WIN, WIN, WIN!
  11. Yea John be positive; it's the best medicine. I had 2 cancers in 08 and 09 back to back and I am still kickin! Had a basal cell carcinoma on my cartilage in my nose which I had 20 proton beam treatments after I had prostate cancer surgery. Thankfully I was on active duty Army at the time so I ended up coming out smelling like a rose. Free medical, 100% VA disability pension, Army retirement, and social security disability pension paid back to 6 months after I was med-evaced out of Iraq. I would probably buy your Z car for my son. but it would take me 2 or 3 months since today I committed to buy a home. Keep me in mind. Get well and remember being positive is your best medicine.     This is the worst, John had so much knowledge. When I first came to this forum I picked up pretty quickly that if John Coffey said it, you could take it to the bank. Big loss.

  15. I pulled up this thread just the other day because I was curious if you ever got it up and running again. So sorry to hear this, and I hope your prognosis is good. If you can afford to hang on to the car, I think you should. If you need the funds, then it's probably worth it to get it running again; "not running" knocks a ton off the price you can get. Best wishes either way!
  16. Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I hope things work out for the best. You might just want to let the car sit for now. There's nothing about it that demands a decision unless you're trying to raise some money. Then I get it. I bought my road worthy '76 280z for $6,500. It has some rust issues but it was running and driveable. As a buyer I probably wouldn't want to give you more than $4,000 for a non-running car. If I had high confidence that there was nothing seriously wrong with the motor and the car didn't have any rust I might go to $5,000. If the car was running well and rust free, I would expect you could get $8-9K. Hopefully, some of the more knowledgeable posters will chime in. This is just my opinion.
  17. Very unfortunate news and I will include you in my prayers. I went through one hell of a scare last year when a tumor marker in my routine blood work came back 3 times over normal limits. Had to go through a full month of very intense testing (more blood work, 2 full body MRIs, endoscopy, and a sh-t load more) until they were able to rule out pretty much all the bad stuff. There's still a very remote possibility that something else might show up in the future so I have to stay vigilant. At that point my Z car became my best therapy. Working on it when I could and dealing with the issues that arose kept me away from dwelling on all the negative thoughts that otherwise went through my mind continuously associated with the possible diagnosis. I know everybody is a little different but perhaps you shouldn't get rid of your Z. Maybe it's there to help you through this rough patch as you receive whatever treatment is needed to cure or manage this disease. You're in the best place in the world for medical treatment. Your chances at beating cancer are better than they've been in history and the way you approach it mentally will influence the outcome. Hang in there pal, best of luck and don't sell your Z.

  19. I sure am sorry to hear about your health issues. Fortunately they have come so far with treatment now you have a good chance of beating it, my next door neighbor did with something called "proton therapy" at MD Anderson in Texas. Best of luck. I personally wouldn't spend another dime on your Z, $9,000 is a lot already for a 280. If it was a 240, maybe you'd get your money back. Again, best of luck.

  21. wow, so sorry to hear - puts a lot of things in perspective. while you may not get all your investment back (hard to do on these cars) i'm sure folks will chime in with suggestions to help you sell it. hope things brighten up and you find a brighter path forward.
