  1. For Kats? Sure. I'm volunteering. I'd make it!
  2. If only the SU's designer had included an external adjustment screw for setting the float level.
  3. Exactly. I find the wet-set to be much easier and way more accurate. So for the wet-set - If you're not comfortable with a sharpie line on the bowl, then sure... Use a piece of tape. Sharpie does wipe right off with carb cleaner though. As for getting a straight on-view, maybe use a mirror? I may be in the minority, but I don't think the measurement down to the fraction of a mm has that much of an impact. Which leads me to the last question about accounting for the different float levels needed for the front & rear carbs? I guess, if they're already different and close, I'd let them alone, but I think 20mm +/- 2mm will work. The 70-71 carbs all used 20mm. It wasn't until 72 that they started messing around with the levels like that. To me, it seems like some Nissan engineer was looking to make a name for himself and thought it would be a good idea to dive into the minutia due to engine tilt. "Boy... My 70 and 71 just always seems to run different between the front and rear carbs. I bet it's because of engine tilt." Said no-one ever.
  4. Yup. I created a post on August 17th. After the auction, I was ready to contact the BAT police to report an incident of grand theft auto!!! Frankly, I was a bit surprised the seller agreed to the lowball reserve BAT offered up to place this car on the auction block. The buyer got the deal of the year snagging a blue chip example for less than half it would cost to embark on a 240Z restoration of this caliber today.
  5. Are you volunteering? 😉
  6. Yeah, don't worry, there will be a next Z-con! My 280zx resto started in 2014! And it's still not done! Be glad you CAN work on your eye-apple.. It doesn't really matter how long the journey takes to the finish as long you enjoy the ride! Let go of the z-con date.. It's disturbing to much! I'm sure you will have a EXCELLENT car in the end! DON'T WORRY BE HAPPY !!
  7. Oh duh, maybe i drop the pipe and slide it forwards with the car on rhino ramps! that should be much less twisting and work.
  8. Historian/Sr. Research Analyst back at work!!
  9. Finally I put a parts number decal on the metal radiator shroud. The decal is my laptop reproduction. Kats
  10. And about the spring... My spring was a little rusty nugget. Pretty much nothing left. I got a couple locks from junkers and adapted one of them to fit my lock. Unfortunately, I don't remember what the donor car was, which makes the suggestion mostly useless. But, here's a pic. My rusty nugget of what's left of my original spring is at the top, and two donor springs in the foreground: I ended up cutting the "double" spring into two pieces and using half of that one. Again, my original nugget in the lower left:
  11. So I tore into one of the rear calipers today. They don't look good and I don't know how to get them apart. I'm also concerned if I get them apart I won't be able to get them back together. I'm going to see if O'Reillys can get me a pair. Here is a marker light after I used some silicone to reassemble them. I just left the squeeze out. It scrapes right off with a fingernail after it's dry. Today we worked on putting the ugly engine into Lily I separated the transmission yesterday and made sure the pressure plate wasn't rusted to the flywheel. It was a little crusty but I cleaned it up and Cody helped me get it back on the engine. It has a Centerforce clutch in it from the 90's probably!! The next step is cleaning the Ztherapy SU's that have been sitting for a decade or so.''
  12. Yikes. Not sure if this was posted or not. This car was stolen. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1970-datsun-240z-125/
  13. Working on the car today was not fun. I put in about 8 hours. First problem I ran into was the SU nozzle issue above. When compared the nozzles side by side, interestingly, the shorter of the two had not actually been shortened. The nozzles have a little groove around the circumference. You can see it in the picture below. Aligning the grooves on the nozzles, the distance from the groove to the top of the nozzle was the same for each. I decided that the nozzle was going to have to be replaced. But, I couldn't set it aside. I had to mess with it. So, I ended up removing this crimp collar (using a hammer and flat punch, it came off pretty easily. After that came off, I was able to remove the brass nozzle portion from the plastic portion. From there, I experimented with putting the brass nozzle piece back into the plastic, but not as far in. And then I pressed the collar back in to place. It took me 3 tries (remove the collar, adjust the height of the brass portion, reinstall the collar) before I got the 'short' nozzle to be the same length as the other one. It seems to be held in place very well when the collar is put into place. However, I don't trust it. My guess is that with heat and use, it may "drop" down further into the plastic portion of the nozzle. So, ultimately I wasted a bunch of time messing with it - time I really should have spent making progress on the car to try to get it ready for Z-Con. From there I worked on the rear hatch glass stainless steel trim. I removed more small dents and stepped my way through 320/400/600/1000/1500/2000/2500 grit sand papers and then used metal polish on them. Each one took a lot of work. Then, I TRIED to install them. I had no idea it was going to be so hard. Literally impossible with all my expertise and tools on hand. I ended up cutting/slicing/gouging the rubber hatch glass gasket in so many places that it is trash. I am so frustrated. I really thought that it wouldn't be that difficult. So, now what? I have to remove the rear hatch glass and replace the seal. While it is out, I can try to put the trim in place and then reinstall the rear glass. But what about the front windshield. I don't want to destroy that seal... and I don't want to take the winshield out. What am I going to do? How am I going to get the new stainless trim I bought from Japan installed on that one? Combining the events of today along with the fact that the parts I sent to be plated are not going to be plated in time and my seat belts and small parts sent off for re-chroming aren't going to make it back in time, I'm not going to be able to make it to ZCon. The business I sent a few remaining items to be plated has closed. My package was stuck for 7 days in limbo, but thankfully, I got someone at USPS eventually, and I am having them send my package back to me. So, at least I didn't lose the parts.
