  1. I have decided to sell my 918 Orange 1971 240Z. This is an original restoration with most of the work documented on this website link at: (Unfortunately some of the earlier work on this thread was accidentally deleted by the site admin due to some external spammers) I would consider the car a Category 2 restoration based on Hagerty's scale. This car placed 2nd in the Z car category at the 2016 JCCS which had nearly 50 entrants, arguably one of the most competitive Z car shows in the nation. The car runs great and all electronics work well including an original radio, antenna, wipers and clock (quartz mech) The car has also been featured in the 2018 Fall edition of the GQ style magazine and can be seen at this website: https://www.gq.com/story/datsun-240z-oral-history Many new and original parts on the car. Freshly chromed bumpers and 'Just dashes' dash just to name a few. Rims and hubcaps are epic (they were carefully stored for over 45 years) and are a bit hard to part with. While many parts of the car would be considered condition 1 by Hagerty's, I would consider the paint it's weak link and a category 2 ( I personally would give it a 7.5 or 8 out of 10). It is a beautiful high end single stage paint that could probably use a little more color sanding. On the flip side of this, I was praised by one Concours car show judge on how the paint replicates the original factory paint in its' appearance. Other minor issues would be a gap near at the drivers side door that is a bit wide and the original 47 year old exhaust that sounds a bit like a motorboat at low RPMs. I will also include a new aftermarket (motorsport) exhaust in the sale. Below are some recent pics. Will be listing on BAT soon Many more pictures available upon request Thanks, Rich
  2. I'm properly inspired to go scrape some undercoating off the bottom of a nice clean 510 shell. Jack it up, slip under with some foam padding, get that torch out, melt some tar, eat some molten tar, peel some hot tar off of burnt skin. What could be better?
  3. Got the engine fired this weekend, resolved brake issues and a few other misc items. Will readjust valves tomorrow and tackle a few electrical gremlins, I don’t plan to paint the car but am planning on shooting the underside of the hood and bottoms of the front fenders. After that I hope to get the car on the road and put some miles on her.
  4. Simple. Insert 1/2" grommet in the middle hole of the buckle. Sent from my [device_name] using http://Classic Zcar Club mobile
  5. Duct tape, but you might loose points ?
  6. If it is a very visible area then a butt would be prettier but it does come with a bit more risk and it will take longer with more care to make it look like it was never repaired. I find butt welding new sheet metal to old to be tricky some times as the old metal wants blow holes, in that case I start the weld on the new side and drag the bead to the old side, that helps prevent it. Laps welds I love, fast, easy, strong and if you are recreating a stock flange you can drill holes in the flange and plug weld for a good spot weld lookalike. You can also start with a lap joint but just tack welded then run a thin cutoff wheel down the center of the lap, remove the off cuts and have a very consistent distance between the panels and that makes butt welding much easier. WE WANT PICS
  7. Butt welds. End of story.
  8. I see two gauges. Do they both read the same? There are a lot of questionable quality gauges out there. You've done so much work there that just pulling the pump and regulator and setting up a loop in to a gas can might be the simplest way to test the two main components. Avoid sparks, be aware of wind direction, have an extinguisher handy, etc. I put a filter in-line also to protect the parts when i do that kind of test.
  9. Neat. Those mirror attachments look like they might be just the ticket for getting down between the two carbs. Do report back. That would be easier (albeit more expensive) than what I do. And once you have a tool like that, I'm sure you can come up with other uses!
  10. Oh yeah baby. The ability to pull pretty much anything is pretty damn nice... My dad's 2018 F350 can pull 3 times its own weight! Also, 8 foot bed. Don't need to have stuff sticking out. And if you don't need a big bed, you can put a toolbox and an extra fuel tank in it. Or you replace the bed with a flatbed to have even more space, or a crane, or a whole lot of toolboxes. You can do anything with a truck, really. Except maybe park in cities, but why the hell would anyone want to live in a city? Country living is the way to go [emoji41] In my case, I'm gonna be storing my Z in a 28ft cargo hauler converted into an rv. It's insulated, got a shower, a sink, and electricity. What more do you need? And of course I need a truck to pull it. Sent from my OP 3T using Classic Zcar Club mobile
  11. Oh well I suppose it had to happen sooner or later. The engine I got with the car which was a bit 2nd hand decided to give up at the recent GTR festival. Only got two laps before it started overheating. Not too bad after 3 years hard racing. Diagnosis blown head gasket. We expected that as it had been showing signs and we just keep patching it up. So we decided new head gasket and maybe rings/bearings ...... but turns out it is too far overbored to give it even a hone and the head is to soft to last much longer - so time for a new engine. Happy to post pics etc as we do it - but only if there is interest. Most online forums are dead these days and I can't be bothered with facebook. So post here if you want to see pics of the engine build - heres a teaser
  12. Is that so? Don't you have midsize trucks like the f150, silverado 1500 or dodge 1500? Or full-size trucks either? What a weird country... Sent from my OP 3T using Classic Zcar Club mobile
  13. I just drove over to Classic Datsun Motorsports in Vista, CA to pick up a set of Panasport Z-Light 16x7's. Les Cannaday ( les@classicdatsun.com ) is great to work with. Wheels are still wearing the blue shrink wrap. Les' Panasport distributor said they weigh 17.4 lbs each.
  14. Half done indeed.... More than half the work was getting the undercoating off. The hood was almost completely black with tar when I started...! I will get it down to bare metal soon enough!
  15. 1 point
To emphasize to all --- The ZCON judged car show and the ZFest (People's Choice car show) will be held INDOORS in AIR CONDITIONED COMFORT at the Hilton Convention Center. This will not be like it was with the sweltering heat at Memphis in 2015 or at Austin in 2017. It might be hot outside, but baby its going to be COOL inside! Can't wait to see you guys again! Come on down for some Ozark hillbilly hospitality!!
  16. Machinist is currently working on the engine this eve and said the piston mold should be done tomorrow or Sunday. Stopped by the body shop to drop off some parts and took some photos of my own. It looks fantastic! The next updates should be good stuff!
  17. The three flat head phillips bolts that hold the latch assembly in the door, use different length bolts in the three positions. I think if you put one of the long ones in the bottom holes, it gets in the way of the mechanism. Seen this before. Anyway, try that first.
  18. I have used 303 for as long as I can remember. I also store in a garage and limit direct sun and hot interior. Winter storage is my home garage so no freezing temperatures. 72 body and block, everything else 71, Tokico springs, Illumina, R180 CLSD, 83 close ratio, 3.90 gears, Ztherapy SUs, BRE 15X7 Libre wheels and BRE front spoiler.
  19. Balance tube shaved and intake cleaned up, things slowly going back together. Just when I think I have everything I discover a missing gasket, bolt etc. Installed the new heater valve and hoses, yesterday, boy was that fun, I think I lost 5 pounds doing that. Exhaust going on tomorrow.
