1970 240Z on eBay with Low VIN?
3 pointsIt's my new project! Steve thank you for your original sharing of this ebay find. I originally went to see it due to it's proximity to me thinking parts car at best due to the perception of rust having taken over. I found that the rust you see is the rust you get with the exception of just above the frame rails in the front wheel wells. The floors are solid the fuel tank looks solid. I attribute this to sitting inside the heated garage. Original wheel covers, within the first 5000, all original parts intact. I am stoked for the restoration of this series one car. This is an original owner 50,000 car with a story to tell. Would this be considered a "Barn Find"?3 points

Replacement seat belt question - rigid sleeve length?
Not willing to trust my life to 46 year-old belts, I opted for the Wesco Roadster Retractable belts (model # SBS-roadst-prev-welr-n). Like some others, I mounted the retractor to the shoulder belt mount above the quarter window. Get the 11" sleeve for the buckle side and the buckle will always be at the right height for easy access. No need for the optional hardware kit if you have the OE bolts & washers. Easy to use, well pleased with the product. http://www.wescoperformance.com/resebe.html2 points

New Z Owner from MN
1 pointHI All, In 1987 or so, I test drove a 1978 280Z, I think it was $1500-2000, in that range. I don't remember why I passed on it, other than it was the first car I had looked at in that search, and I wanted to check out some others. I ended up buying a 1979 RX-7. This was pre-internet, you have to remember. While that was a cool car (flip up headlights!) it didn't have that awesome "sitting in a cockpit" feel that the Z had. Well, that and the engine blew almost immediately, but hey... Fast forward 30 years, I finally reversed the decision, and got a 240Z. I have been tracking them for a few years. I didn't want a project car, I know I'll never find time to get it out of the project stage. I didn't want a concours car, because then I'd be terrified to drive it. Finally found a good candidate, in my price range, and shipped it up here from AZ. HLS30-01427, January 1970. The car came with a lot of service records. The thing that stuck out to me in reading them is just how frustrated the first and second owners must have been. The amount of work done on the car is stupendous. Makes me appreciate every 1990+ car I ever owned, even more (in terms of build quality, I mean). None of the previous owners did anything crazy, it is largely original in nature, I would say, but wow a lot of repairs and replacements were made. For example, completely re-upholstered in 1979 (only 8 years in??). It also had a refresh done by a PO (in the 80s I think). Has an airdam, metal "grill" trim (and shoulder-height trim), and wrong blue. And a non-matching L24. Immediate Plans: Find a mechanic in MN to help me with it. Install 3 point seatbelts (lots of good threads here on that). I don't have to worry about re-sale value going down because I make a 3rd anchor point for the belt, do I? My gut feeling is that this car is unoriginal enough that something like that won't matter a bit. Am I right about that though? Find the gas leak(s). Car has a permanent smell of gas, even if it hasn't run in days. First purchase made: fire extinguisher. Rig up MSA rear speaker bar. AM radio long-gone of course, but tape deck powers on. At some point, some other speakers were installed, but no trace of them now except the speaker wires going no where. Work on dampening squeaks in the cockpit. Couple good threads about that here. Not sure how crazy I want to go on that, but it seems like some work with the panels will probably cut it down a lot. Longer-term Plans: Not at all sure. Not restore it to perfection, that much I know. Maybe swap out the engine for an L28, maybe ZX 5 speed. Current engine feels tired. Since it's not the original anyway, that might be considered an upgrade? Maybe restore the interior. The 1979 or so re-upholstering has carpet everywhere (which is fine, very modern, but kind of feels not like a Z without the cheesy vinyl diamonds). Maybe completely restomod the interior, with custom leather, new seats, new color. Restore dash. Maybe new wheels. The 6 spoke (280ZX?) wheels are kind of growing on me though. Anyway, happy to be here. Wish I was going to the Z con in austin!1 point

Replacement seat belt question - rigid sleeve length?
Meh, I'm not too fond of the product MSA sells. The roadster style sold by Wesco is a better option IMHO. Search this site for Wesco to see the many posts on those belts.1 point

35 mm film developing find
1 pointI'm already using one of the big ones to soak my grills two grates before cleaning. If somebody grew plants they would make good starter trays, I'm guessing.1 point

1 pointThose trays would make great drip/catch pans and the stainless developing tanks probably have other useful uses (cool beer cup maybe?). Just my 2 cents......1 point

Wanted: 240z (preferably modified) - Cash Waiting
If distance from Michigan to wherever isn't an issue, and you want an engine that isn't stock, perhaps a car close to Virginia Beach could be found, and brought to Datsun Spirit, where a well built performance L28 could be built, before shipping to Jolly 'ol.1 point

Original Z was never supposed to happen
Isn't this just another - same old, same old - example of a journalist not really knowing what he's writing about? It's all very well him getting direct access to Matsuo san (and hats off to Eiji for his rudely uncredited live translation services) but he needs to have a grounded knowledge of the subject to fill in the gaps afterwards. Clearly he doesn't, and has referred to the usual myths and half truths instead... So we get told that Matsuo san worked at Nissan Shatai (Hiratsuka), when in fact he was based at the Nissan Design & Modelling Department (Tsurumi). We get Matsuo "exiled" to a new job and Katayama "exiled to the USA" as a "punishment" (nonsense), we get the 'hood raised to fit the L24' story (when it was raised to suit the L20, which came before the L24), we get told that Katayama chose "...to call the car in America by its working model number “240Z”..." when it's in-house project designation was actually '270' (from '270 Kaihatsu Kigou') and the old saw "...When the first shipment of 240Zs arrived in the United States still with “Fairlady” badges on the back, Katayama went so far as to personally remove them with his own hands.". First shipment, huh? And Nissan did have a full-size wind tunnel at their disposal. It's no surprise that '240Z' is used where 'S30-series' would be more appropriate, as that's become the norm and it's a habit that even accredited marque experts insist on. However it turns any discussion on the origin and development of the cars into a mess, throwing up situations where we get told "The Japanese 240Z even came with a stopwatch...". I'm tempted to shout "Fake News!", but it's more akin to to the blind leading the blind. Poor effort.1 point

Some pics
1 pointfeelin' the love, you guyssssssssss <3 that's about 100-150 pieces of the latest round of plated parts. some are just broken bolts and whatnot that i tossed in the batch so that I can keep around for samples or decoration, since it didn't add to cost. there are about 1000 more pieces in clear zinc and yellow as well at my home that I've sorted through. wiring is after the windshield and various other glass pieces, then dashboard, etc. Thanks. its #1606. On the harder to find items, I've attempted to use the closest materials and even include manufacturing variances and errors that were present on the car when it was being disassembled and documented (by someone else) I have about 2000 photos of various stages of progress that I will be posting in the other thread since my last update, but Chris sneaked these photos in today while we were making some headway on the headliner surround pieces. not the most fun to do on your own, glad he was around!1 point

35 mm film developing find
1 pointI'll get it all together Saturday. Those large trays and a couple of other things I will take pictures of and send them to you to see if you want them too. I would think shipping charges would be close to their cost? I'll let you make that decision though. Back with you tomorrow with photos.1 point

Speedi-Sleeve or Not?
1 pointOkay, got the sleeve on, thought I'd post a few pics. Put thin coat of silicone on inside of sleeve, and pressed it on. I suppose a mallet would have worked too if careful. Ready to go.1 point
