  1. I was ready to go last year, but then they didn't do the whole 9 yards. So I passed. This year - if they hold it in late April as is normal, I probably have a conflict again, just as I did in 2009, 2008, 2007...
  2. Wrong. The stock size is/was (the now obsolete) 175SR14 or 175HR14 (depending on year). That is equivalent to 175/80-14 in today's sizing, not 175/60-14.
  3. I did, several of them. But something has happened in the forum config and some of the attached pictures (including mine) aren't correctly linked to the thread right now. I've sent Mike a note about it.But in the meanwhile, I drove my car to work today, so I'll see if I can get away from my desk and go take a picture. Will post it back here shortly.
  4. I can second Ron's recommendation - the boot I got from Bryan is great, and was virtually indistinguishable from the original - except the new one wasn't cracked, aged and falling apart.
  5. I bought everything for my Type A 'box from Nissan, except the bearings. Those I bought from a local industrial bearing supply house for a lot less than Nissan. I've heard rumors of bad aftermarket synchro rings, which is why I bought those from Nissan.
  6. Are you talking the outer (leather or vinyl) boot? Not the inner rubber seal? The original vinyl boot for the cars with the Type A 'box was made of quite thin vinyl, and was not a lace-up boot. The heavier later-style boots could interfere, I suppose. MSA does carry an original style repro. (Link) I can't speak for its quality, as I've not seen one in person. The one I have was made by a CZCC member, LBO730. See this thread for details: Early Shift Boots. I don't see how an original style in the correct material could interfere.
  7. Definitely the hose to the smog pump. It's cut shorter that it was originally, so I'm betting the pump is long gone. It would have been mounted on the left side of the block, under the distributor. Where in Oregon do you live, Mitch? Have I seen your car around?
  8. I'd consider Phoenix. Or most anywhere in Oregon, Washington or California. Also Vegas, Reno, Denver, Salt Lake or Boise. Any of those are "west enough". I could see doing that much. But 2500 or more one-way is a bit much. I'd be driving. No trailers for me. Flying is no good for me. No point if I can't bring my Z. Finding a West Coast club willing to devote the resources to this is obviously the issue. I try not to look at all the pictures. It always depresses me. It was not my intent to imply that there is any bias. The issue is and has been that the clubs on this side of the country aren't interested in doing it. I figure there are any number of reasons, but I can't speak for other clubs for certain. But I think part of the problem is that early Zs are too common out here, so lots of owners don't feel the need to join or participate in a club. Most of the clubs I've heard of simply don't have the devoted membership to pull this off. Perhaps. Although, MSA's bash was a virtual non-event in 2010, and I'm getting a little bored with the local shows. Not much driving involved, just a sit-n-git with the same cars, every year.<sigh>OK, I'm done complaining now. Here's hoping that this year's ZCON is well attended, fun and successful for all. As for me, I think I'll go re-paint a couple of Hot Wheels....
  9. No, yours is correct for your car. The straight stick was for the Type A 'box, which was only used through July or August '71 production. All '72s should have the Type B with bent lever.
  10. An announcement that 2012 will be on the West Coast. That would increase the S30 content a lot, as this is where the majority of still existing S30s in the US are. Yeah, I know, ain't gonna happen. There don't seem to be any clubs on the Left coast that are willing to man up and sponsor it here.
  11. I'm with Steve. If the injection is working well, there's no large benefit to swapping to carbs on a stock or mostly stock motor. If you are hot-rodding it a lot, you may want to consider triples, or a more modern injection.

Find TDC manually (watching valves and piston with the spark plug out) and then use a triangular file to make a mark in the correct location.
  13. If it has the later 4 speed in it, the hole has probably been enlarged.
  14. Yeah, I think we need a picture.
  15. True for 240Z, 260Z and some early 280Zs, but somewhere along the line they stopped putting the engine number on the data plate. Seems to me it was partway through the '76 model year. So your car may or may not have the engine number on the plate. If it does not, all you can go by is whether the number is in the correct range for the car or not.
  16. IIRC, the diode in a 280Z is built into the alternator. Should be no need for a separate diode on that car.
  17. The weight of the metal fan was said to be hard on the water pumps, which is apparently why Nissan changed to plastic for 1972. If you are going to drive the car, a plastic fan is a good idea. The fan clutch for the metal fan will not fit a plastic fan, you need to get a fan from a '72-78, the clutch can be from the same or also from a 280ZX. The fans on the ZX's are a bit different. FWIW, I have a fan from a 260Z with a 280ZX clutch on mine. The metal fan and clutch are safely stored.

When I had an E12-80, I picked up spare modules at the scrap yards for peanuts. In addition to the ZXs, Nissan used the same module on many mid-80s four cylinders. Look at 210s, late 510s, 710 and '80s pickups as well as ZXs.
  19. Not enough flash and visual pop for 905 red.On the other hand, those LeMans will probably overwhelm plain, old white.

Six of one, half a dozen of the other. I've tried both. (Actually went back to points, but that may be a failing of my car, since neither EI worked in my car to my satisfaction.) Either way, if it were me, I'd pack spares and basic tools with me. Either a spare E12-80 module, or a set of points to replace the Pertronix. That way a failure of either doesn't leave you stranded.
  21. Please. Stop. Posting. LeMans. Pictures. :tapemouth
  22. Went out for a nice drive in the sun, warmed it up thoroughly, then treated it to some fresh oil and a new Nissan filter.
  23. Rather than let these threads go on forever as they do in some other forums, I thought I'd start new ones for separate generations for the New Year. Use these threads for short, Twitter-like posts, things that may not be worth their own thread. This one is for the Z32s. Enjoy, and let's keep each other involved!
