Is my MC bad?
I don't know if this help, but someone posted here recently that if the servo/booster pushrod is removed and a rubber disc inside the servo gets dislodged, then the symptoms are exactly as you describe. Nothing at first and then Bamm

Philosophical discusion on build dates
sticking my oar in with a bit of heresay and assumption.:classic: My understanding of the production scheduling surrounding the export of 240z's ONLY, is that someone in Nissan decided that the US market had priority and that a huge effort to produce LHD cars took place in late 1969. If this is the case did Nissan effectively 'down tools' on the RHD cars until it got its LHD production up to speed, or did it continue producing RHD cars for models other than the 240z. The amount of RHD fairladys and possibly other models from 1969 would suggest to me that RHD production did continue. I have pictured in the past the idea of low vin RHD 240z perhaps being part finished in 1969 and then completed later when LHD production allowed, but that seems unlikely given that RHD models other than the 240z were being produced in 1969. This is perhaps where the low vin RHD 240z's owners start to believe that their cars were produced in 1969. From my own point of view I have often heard it suggested that the date on the seatbelts is a good dater of when the car was produced. On my own car dated April 1970 the seat belts are dated dec 1969, but I doubt that that was when it left the factory. More likely there was some stockpiling of parts such as seat belts during late 1969 in preparation of the push for LHD production in early 1970, which were actually used up on early 1970 cars. Possible ( but unlikely) that my car has had the seat belts replaced I suppose. for what its worth Andrew

Springs
Rolf If your car is an ex-USA car then standard front springs will be much longer than the rears. If it's a euro car counting the number of coils and comparing to the spec in a Haynes manual (I think) was OK for me. Hope it helps Andrew

original jute material
No problem 26thz, let me know if you need any better pictures. I have the rear deck jute too but I think Kats pictures are the same as mine. Most of the new jute I have looked at over here is also not quite the same, but I keep on looking.:classic: Hope the z convention goes well. regards Andrew

masterash bar
Give yourself a pat on the back Kats, I am sure everyone here thinks your car is one of the best original ones in existence. I hope your car reaches LA OK and you enjoy the convention. regards Andrew

"rare Treasure"
I have admit I have bought a couple of these so called 'grab bags' just to get one or 2 sundry trim items, that I have not been able to get elsewhere. They have never been more than us$5-$10 though and at that price I feel are worth it. Nothing in that 'treasure' that is particularly rare as far as I can see but I can't make out some of the smaller items. just my opinion Andrew

original jute material
Having just got the remaining jute material from my 1970 car out of storage after 10 years, I thought it might be helpful to post some pictures of what is left as a comparison to the patterns that Kats posted previously, which I think were from a Japanese market car? hope this is of help to someone. The Z Car's Nemesis?
The mention of a ford capri is enough to wizz off any British z owner. The number of times that those who know nothing about z's say 'it looks a bit llike a ford capri' as a kind of a summation of what the z is about really gets my goat. A capri is no competitor chassiswise as they were running a live rear axle and cart springs right up until they stopped making them in the 1980's, and seeing them hop around the circuit at track days whilst z's run rings round them is great. The last and best car from 1987 were no quicker in a straight line than my 1972 standard 240z. They also had almost as bad a rust problem as z's. Going offthread a bit the capri is a good example of how poor manufacturer parts support can result in once common cars almost disappearing from our roads, as spare parts for European fords over 20 years old now are almost non existent, and so 1970's capris in good condition are probably rarer than z's. I think the z has fared pretty well in spare parts supply in comparison. An alfa GTV ? Now that's what I call a rust problem. great car though. Just my opinion Andrew

Transmission reinstall methods
No help here I'm afraid here, but all I can say is if someone the size of Z-kid finds it tough going then I have no chance.:classic: Andrew

Rust Removal - Continued
I was wondering what was holding the front end of the car together once you cut out that huge section of inner wing/chassis member. Great job though. Inspiration to all those who think their car is too far gone to repair:classic:

Social Poll...
Last time I went to where I grew up (about 100 miles away) I nearly totalled my car as some idiot had put a new traffic junction in on a fast section of road that I knew like the back of my hand:stupid:

'Datsun' Fender Emblems
Dave I'd go with 26th-z and HS30-H on this. Early emblems all metal except rear hatch grilles which have always been plastic. I do know that Charlie Osborne from zeddfindings was searching for metal rear hatch grilles a year or so back, so perhaps they do exist? Originality aside, I have sought to get a metal set of emblems because in my experience they are much less likely to break off their mounting tabs than the plastic ones. Unfortunately the rear hatch grilles (plastic only?) seem to be almost impossible to remove from the hatch without breaking the mounting tabs off. Zedrally, I have recently bought a pair of metal fender emblems for about $35 off ebay, which were in above average condition. I did get outbid on a set which were probably in far better nick that went for $90odd. regards Andrew

Christmas in May!!!
that list of parts looks very similar to my own, I've had most of the parts ( with the exception of the shocks and SU's) sitting in my garage for the last couple of years waiting for me to find time to fit them. Some great upgrades in your list. :classic: We do care: its good to hear what other zdrivers are doing on their cars. Not having had a running z for many years I need all the incentives/encouragement I can get!!

240Z Series 1 Tool Box Questions
Dave good to see you back:classic: There are some good pictures showing how the jack/wheel chocks and tool bag fit in the tool storage areas in Kats' jute material thread. It's quite a long thread but the pictures are worth it:classic: These also show the clips that hold the wheel chocks and jack in place. These clips are very difficult to come by. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9168&highlight=jute+material As far as I know jack/chocks and tool/jackhandle bag were the only 3 items that go in the storage area, but I may be wrong. I too suspect that some spanners were included in the tool bag as I have 1 nissan branded spanner that came out of a parts car. hope it helps Andrew

series one car to be scrapped?
I know this is a long shot, but does any one know of a series 1 shell about to be scrapped anywhere? I would like to cut a section out from the rear deck (pretty much the section you see in the attached picture courtesy of Kats), to replace the area on mine where a previous owner has cut speaker holes. Many thanks for any assistance Andrew

rebuilt brake calipers
Good point!! Probably a bit too far from home for most of the the members of 240z.org, but they were done by a company called classicar automotive in the UK

rebuilt brake calipers
I can't believe what a great job has been done on these. They were just covered in rust before rebuild.

Seat Covers Arrived
I got mine from Datsunrestore. BUT I am not bad mouthing their seat covers. I'm going to keep the set I bought for my second (not so original) 240z. It's only because I am going for originality on my 1970 car that they are not the right ones. I have one undamaged original seat which I am trying to find a matching seat cover kit for.(Kats has inspired me to go that last 10%!!!) The datsun restore ones appear to be well made and they are $60 cheaper than classic datsun, but there are some detail differences from the original ones which I didn't realise until after I bought them, and I think the seat would look odd if I had one original and one datsun restore seat cover in my car. You may think I am being a bit over conscious of the detail. :classic: I have attached a picture of old and new top cover side by side. The areas I thought they differed from the original are: 1) some of the edge piping is missing. 2) The texture in the middle of the backrest and middle of the bit you sit on is quite different. 3) The vent holes in the backrest are larger and look very different. I'd really like to hear from someone who has classic datsun or MSA seat covers as to how close to original those seat covers are. Gav240z, how bad are the seats in your car? My seats that looked very worn out had most of the damage on the seat cover itself. The foam was reusable, but needed some minor repairs and extra padding.

Seat Covers Arrived
NickF I'd like to see if these classic datsun seat covers are TOTALLY as original as I have heard before splashing out my hard earned cash. ( bought a cheaper set from somewhere else: no good:cry:) look forward to seeing some pictures Did you have any problem getting Classic Datsun to ship overseas? regards Andrew

Hose clamps
Kats here is the link for the blue braided hose. http://www.needforspeed.co.uk/pages/sbv_pn.asp?PartNo=VHO10B&LineNo=248071000 I have ordered some of this hose and will post comparison pictures with an oem hose when it arrives. Apologies for the time taken re 1970 tyre I will get to it soon. It will not be sold to any one else:classic: Out of interest how many of the 1970 fuel hose clamps are there on your car. I reckon it should be about 10 in total. I only have 2 on mine, the rest have been replaced with modern ones. regards Andrew
