I patched cracks from the inside with fiberglass cloth and resin. I filled small holes with teo part epoxy putty. After painting, I added the silver trim with a fine tip Sharpie pen.

  5. My Z is also an April '71 build and it came with a metal fan which went through the radiator around 1979 when the water pump failed. I replaced it with a lighter weight metal flex fan and no clutch at the time, but now have a plastic fan and clutch Dennis.
  6. Living in the desert, I've tinted windows on the family sedan, but not the Z. Tinting does keep the interior much cooler, plus I like the look. For the Z, I prefer a rear window louver. Tint film has the ability to pull the rear glass defroster grid off the glass which is a major downside for me. If you go with tint film, check local laws on which windows and how dark for tinting. Laws and tint shops often have different opinions. Dennis
  7. Ahh, the visual inspection. In the days when my 1970 Porsche still had to be smog tested, it would pass the sniffer test, but not the visual test due to some items not being on the engine carb linkage. Couldn't find all the necessary bits and pieces the smog referee insisted on, so I put Historic license plates on the car and never had to go through smog testing again. I'm glad those days are behind us. Dennis
  8. Perfect! Problem solved. Dennis
  9. I have a need.....a need to vent. When I log into the Classiczcars site and click on "Unread Content" to see what's going on in the Z community, nine of the first 25 posts are ebay listings posted by "Bender". I don't want to see ebay posts by "Bender". I've tried blocking "Bender" posts, but that doesn't seem to work. Wading through the crap posts to get to the interesting reading that draws me to the site is a less than pleasant experience. If anyone has a suggestion on how to block the unwanted posts, please let me know. I find myself coming back to this site less frequently than before this issue developed. I used to enjoy the Z content and interaction much more than now when a third of the posts are ebay redirects. I will now slide my soapbox back under my desk and await any suggestions. Maybe I'm the only one who is annoyed. Dennis
  10. Cool! Now your tires can wear out from the inside as well as the outside. I have to believe that after 100 years of putting pneumatic tires on cars that manufacturers would jump on this if it really was a viable option. 11. If you do a search on this site, you'll find several threads on hose replacement. Most of them indicate how to work around hoses that are no longer available by using easy to find fuel rated hose and elbows and kink reducers. My tank was done a couple months ago based on information found on this forum. There's a wealth of help if you're willing to look for it. Plus, you'll get that warm fuzzy feeling of accomplishment from doing something on your own. Give it a try! Dennis

Welcome to the group! Nice looking Z. Do you have the rear bumper or are you going to have to track one down for the restoration? Dennis
  13. From one original owner to another…. Lucky owner, lucky Z ! Dennis
  14. Before I had my carbs rebuilt a few months ago, I opened and resealed the float bowls several times to check floats and valves. As mentioned, the thin cork gaskets are reusable to a point. Replacements were just a dollar and change from my local Nissan dealer. They do seem to prefer being handled by tiny hands and sometimes get a little twisty. As with about everything else on a Z patience helps. Dennis
  15. My mechanic is booked until next Monday. So it will be a few days before I know the cause of the noise. I'm just glad to have a mechanic that works on older imports. Sounds like your son is eager to learn and enjoys a good challenge. My child never got too interested in the care and feeding of sports cars. Fortunately, he makes a good living doing classified things for three letter government agencies so he can pay someone to work on his car. Dennis
  16. I'm going to check with my mechanic this morning to see when I can get into his shop. I've "aged out" from many of the do it yourself fixes I used to take care of. Hopefully just the wheel bearing. Dennis
  17. I don't think so. I only drove about 15 feet out of the driveway and then backed in. It sounded like one clunk with each revolution of the front wheel. Dennis
  18. I put in a new battery and fired it up - started up immediately even though it had been sitting for some time. Prior to the old battery going dead, I had noticed a clicking coming from the front of the car when driving - speed of the clicking increased with the speed of the car. Today, the clicking became a clunking and the Z is now parked in the driveway. Couldn't see anything loose or hanging by the wheels. Maybe a bad 45 year old wheel bearing? Dennis
  19. Nice Austrian Puch. How much did it weigh? Dennis
  20. W Jute is a natural plant based fiber. Although you have called it carpet, what you show in the photos is the carpet PAD, not the carpet. Your car, your choice about what you want to put UNDER your carpet. Dennis
  21. Looks like a big crack to fiberglass. I'd probably bond in a thin sheet metal or aluminum panel under the fiberglass cloth patch for added structural strength. Dennis
  22. Check out "Forbes Field" or "Forbes AFB" in a Google search and on Google Earth to see the track (Heartland Park) that was built there. Dennis
  23. Looks like factory carpet padding. If you choose not to reuse it, you can cut modern carpet padding to fit. Dennis
  24. Later in my career, I did a little time at K.I, too. Cruise into Marquette for all you can eat Fish Fry Friday! I think just about every base I was at is now closed or turned over to the Guard or Reserve - Forbes AFB in Topeka, Chanute AFB in Rantoul, Richards Gebaur AFB near Kansas City, March AFB near Riverside, CA. Keesler AFB, near Biloxi, still appears to be open. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane - the '71 Z was with me for all except Chanute & Clark. Dennis
