  1. I have been remotivated by Wheee! and siteunseen and others build threads. So I have decided to get serious about getting this car running and finished. So to keep up with the Jones or the Jones'n in Cliffs case I decided to start a build thread to sort of bring everyone up to speed on where I'm at... Bought the car from a guy in Charlotte that had it shipped from out West. He is registered here but really spends more time at Hybrid Z That was late 2008 or early 2009... Stripping the car down Sept 2009 Chipping sound mat out January 2011 Don't you wish you could be that happy about chipping out sound mat

Okay. Here's a picture of today. The 240Z is back, standing next to his big brother . 2 Icons of 70's USA... Did some work yesterday cleaning up the engine bay and interior, cause it was al dirty from standing all that time in the paint shop. Only problem I know have is that the voltage regulator is shot ( I think the accident last time, that caused the damage gave it a final blow. It was reading 17.2 Volts at idle, so shut it down before frying the wiring.. ), ordered one, and it is on the way from Japan...

When I was a kid, I remember going to a local shop that rebuilt alternators. It always smelled like marijuana in there and I thought, "when I get a car, I'll never take anything here to get repaired..these guys are on DRUGS!" Then as a got older I realized that those guys were probably very focused on their trade ;-) It's too bad little shops like that don't exist around here anymore.
  4. Shot the interior with Lizard Skin insulator then sound deadener. Then shot the bottom with undercoater
  5. $19,464.00 final bid, which is about $23,400.00 in my money, I'm happy. Thanks for all the support. Chris
  6. I would recommend you selling it to Denmark
  7. Way too many projects!!! The 510 probably won't get this treatment at least for a while. I really want to get it running so Cody can enjoy it. If he wants to take it off the road for a while later and do it "nuts and bolts" we can, but even if you do it really fast, it takes a year of weekends and nights. I'm 7 years in and just put the first part back onto the car yesterday There are 2 - 66 Thunderbirds in the yard that were gonna be a project. Sold the fastback when my older son lost interest. Another 71 Z to be done if it doesn't rust apart first and a 56 VW bug that is next on the "nuts and bolts" list It is amazing how fast the shop fills up when you disassemble a car. They basically double in size maybe more. In some of these earlier pictures, we have the fastback and the Z torn all the way down. There is also a 56 bug tucked into the other corner of the shop that is out of frame, bead blasting cabinet, tool boxes, welder, plasma cutter, engine hoist. Get's full quick. The shop is about 26' x 27' inside dimensions and has a structural concrete floor above it. So I also have a beam trollie if I want to use it to move things around... There is also more storage. The wall of shelves is not all of the parts the Blue or Tourquoise Z in the driveway was "the shark" from my signature line. I traded it plus some cash to get the Datsun 510 for Cody. We had it running off and on. I had replaced one floor board but it still had a lot of rust. It had rust in weird places too. I am not sure I would have really known what to do with it. Significant rust in the windshield pillars, door jambs and stuff. Hadn't seen that before Land is great. Those young'uns aren't so young any more but they still help me on the cars. The blond chipping the sound mat out is almost 16 now and getting his license. He has the 510 Wagon we're trying to get back on the road. We're getting close...I have considered doing a build thread for that but not sure the reception I would get considering the forum never really got expanded to some other Datsun vehicles. I figured some of the work we have been doing would be applicable to all Datsun cars. We just deconstructed and repaired his hood then reassembled it
  8. Too much on my plate this year. Spending my vacation watching my son at Olympic trials . Like I say every year- maybe next year:( Sent from my iPhone using Classic Zcar Club
  9. Pull the return spring from the clutch slave cylinder and push and pull fork fore and aft. There should be a bit of free play between the top of the stroke and in to the point where resistance is felt. That free play is the distance between the throwout bearing and the pressure plate. If you have clearance the throwout bearing isn't turning.
  10. Makes perfect sense. Now go replace the rest of your droopy filaments. I am Carnac the Magnificent, and I approve this message.
  11. Yeah, the AGC series will be perfect. So if I take a guess as to why you were looking for SFE10's in the first place, I would surmise that you pulled the old fuses out of the fuse block and found a lot of SFE20's in there. Thinking that the SFE series was the correct fuse series, you then went looking for SFE10's to replace some of the lower value positions? If that's the case, then you got caught by that simple trick that at the 20A rating, the SFE and the AGC series are the same length. Where's my dead horse....
  12. I have a friend who used to work on the line at a parts rebuild shop (alternators, water pumps, etc). Mind-numbing work. He had some interesting stories!
  13. Just ground the black wire to the case, "E" is suggested but what ever works is fine. Captain Obvious beat me to the punch. Dave
  14. Lifetime warranty, endless exchanges! All I need is my name and phone number at OReilly and they can tell me if I get free exchanges. No receipt necessary. My "brand new" replacement reman alternator has been sitting on the shelf in my garage for about 4 years.
  15. Cool. Another crisis averted. I have so little faith in the rebuilt stuff these days. How does something like you had get out of the rebuilder's shop? Should never happen.
  16. What we have here is failure to rebuild. The new alternator is a piece of junk. Put the old one back on, turn the key and everything is fine. Hopefully they'll give me another one? Goodnight John BoyZ!
  17. Congrats! Many years ago I rebuilt my 240Z 4-speed on the floor in my apartment. Put down heavy corrugated, then absorbent towels, then blue plastic tarp. Never got a drop of oil on the carpet, but the oil smell lingered in the drapes for several weeks...
  18. The ADR compliance plate is fixed to the car when it arrives in australia. Austalian cars dont have dates on them except on the compliance plate. I'm not sure who fits the compliance plate. The date you car was made? how long is the boat trip from japan? The firewall is stamped above the brake booster, see my gallery for pics of my number. One of the guys here in Western Australia has HS30-00003. [Edit. Not 00003, i mis-read the blury photo I had of the tag. It was 00803. Lowest vin number on the WA register is 117]
