Enrique, Thanks for the reply. Are you saying that this modeling paint has good adhesive qualities on chrome, as these emblems are the early chromed pot metal, as well as the plastic they were meant to bond with? I don't think flexability is as much an issue as just getting some kind of paint to bond to a very smooth chromed surface. Have you used these paints on chromed metal? Yesterday, I was searching through a friends inventory of old parts he was selling and lucked across a pair of metal quarter panel 240Z emblems for early cars that mount just behind the quarter windows. They are both almost perfect, chrome is like new as is most of the paint. The car these were mounted on was, obviously, well cared for and polished frequently as the only problem with these emblems is some of the black paint at the edges had been polished off. I am trying to find out if anyone has had any success in touching up paint on these metal, chromed emblems and getting paint to adhere to the chrome. I thought of getting a product called Bulldog which is supposed to promote adhesion before painting. Does anyone know of a process or paint that has the correct properties to allow good adhesion to chrome? It would be nice to know what process the manufacturer used in painting these chrome emblems. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. For those who remember, it has been some time, I am still working on reproducing those red on silver master vac decals. They have morfed through numerous visits to the sign shop doing them to try to get them as close to original as possible. I am working with the shop on his time schedule, but hope to have something to post for those interested in the near future. Dan

Jerry, There is a guy, web site is www.zeddsaver.com, who, the last time I talked with him, said he was refurbishing tail lights. He has a fairly extensive ability to acquire NOS parts, and may be a good contact for you. His name is Norm Murphy, located in Canada and is very knowledgeable. Also, it is rare, but some platers can do actual chrome on plastic, not vaccum plating. Hope this helps. Dan

Derek, I've done business, occasionally, with the seller of your filter housing and he seem to come up with some very nice NOS parts rarely seen anywhere else. I believe him to be a very creditable seller, just my personal opinion, with a very good track record. I just took a look at my copy of the early brouchure of the 240Z, the one with the green cover with quarter pillar emblem picture. Inside is a picture of the engine compartment showing the filter housing with no decals. your housing, if original, may be a very early one with one of the first decals placed on the housing. I would go to www.zzxdatsun.com and drop Mike McGinnis an email with pictures and questions he may answer for you. He is extremely knowledgable and a nice person to talk with. Just my 2 cents. Moonpup, I agree with you in theory. I believe that there has been an agreement as to the judging standards for hoses on our cars. There is to be no points deducted for rubber, not braided hoses, as I have been told. Although some braided hoses show up from time to time on ebay, I have never seen a NOS pair of master vac braided hoses for sale in the last five or six years. If anyone has a set of these, lets talk. For my car, I would like to have a full compliment of braided hoses just for my own satisfaction so that it would appear as close to original as possible. Unless someone is fortunate enough to have an extremely nice, original survivor car, I know that there was at least one at the last national show, most restored cars will have some reproduction parts such as decals, seat covers, carpeting and jute, etc. I will probably never stop looking for the real mccoy, but, for me, compromise will not deminish the enjoyment of returning my car to as close to original as possible. I appreciate what you are saying, moonpup, I just think that there are too many parts that will never be available in NOS form, except reproductions. Dan

I was talking with one of the lesser know Z car parts suppliers not too long ago, I don't want to mention his name until I get more info from him. He mentioned that he was trying to acquire a machine which would braid new hoses to duplicate the original braided hoses many of us would like to find. Paying big $$$$ for those NOS hoses my become a thing of the past if he is successful. I will certainly provide any updates when new info is forthcomming.

One of my life's most unforgetable experiences was the day I picked up my 1/71 series 1 240Z from Thoroughbred Datsun's showroom floor in Tucson after it had been prepped for delivery. Sure wish I would have requested keeping those D hubcaps as the car was sold only with Aluminum mags. Hi Derek, I think that you are correct. The housings without the manifold heat flap on the air horn, early cars, should have two decals. It would appear that your lone decal is probably original, something you would definitely want to keep, although its placement might not allow room for the larger silver tune up decal. 26th Z might have more definitive expertise if he chimes in, or Mike McGinnis at Bonzai Motorworks, www.zzxdatsun.com, would be a good source as he sells these decals. Hi Will, My parts CD shows the assy-harness step lamp part number to be 24017-E4100. The part number for the step lamp is 26420-E4100. Part number 24016-E4100 is shown to be the harness for the room, or overhead light. I can possibly get my hands on one of these step lamps NOS, but have never seen one of these options on any US car. I am assuming, or guessing, these were optioned or original on JDM or Euro cars. I might get this light just to see what it looks like. Dan

I stand corrected. Mike McGinnis is extremely knowledgable about these matters, and I have asked him frequently for his advise as I, too, am trying to complete my car to as close to original as possible. He is also doing a decal for the heater box under the dash, but I don't think it is available yet.

Just as a point of interest, I believe that the OK sticker was put on by the dealership. I guess not all dealerships put these on new cars. When I purchased my car in 71 from the dealer, the OK sticker was not on affixed to the quarter window.

While we're talking about windshields, does anyone know what years 240z cars came with clear windshields, and which years they came with the tint? I found a NOS windshield for big $$$$ with the tint and would like to know if it originally came on my late series 1 car. The quarter windows seem to have a very light greenish tint but it is really difficult to tell. thanks for any info. Dan

The door threshold has a silver aluminum sill plate that sits outside of the welting. There is, also, a black vinyl covered scuff plate that fastens to the inside rocker area and has a tunnel shaped outside edge that covers the door welting. hope this helps. These scuff plates are sold quite often on ebay.

swamphog, I believe that there were at least two styles of evaporator cores and housings on the dealer installed ac systems. I imagine each style had different locations for holes in the firewall for there particular line locations. I am assuming the template you ask about is for the location of the lines as they pass through the firewall. I don't have such a template, but mention this only so that you may be aware of possible differences, depending on which evaporator you have. Good luck and let us know if you sort this out.

Gee, I didn't know that these were difficult to come by. I use these from my Nissan parts supplier for my show car, and he seems to have these readily available. I believe that Banzai Motorworks also sells these from there online catalogue. Guess I had better stock up.

[ Series I Datsun 240-Z's sold in the USA and Canada were produced between Oct. 1969 and Jan. 1971. Regular Production cars - HLS30-00016 though HLS30 020390 have been recorded so far. Hi Carl, You might want to update ( as if you don't have enough on your mind without critiques from the cheap seats) the series 1 cars to include mine, IZCC#12324. Hey Chris, It appears to be the same vinyl pattern, just oriented differently when cutt and sewn together. Do you think that this orientation was intentional when fabricated, or, just random use of the material when pieces were cutt? Did 26th and 27th have any vinyl on these housings? This may be a little over the top when considering correctness for a total restoration. I'd be interested in your findings to come, and opinion as to correctness.

The pan you mention on ebay is for a 280Z. Note the drain hole in the front corner. It is, also, a deeper pan so as to make room for the taller 280Z radiator.

Arne, Thanks for the master vac decal pics. This confirms the correct format for all cars inclusive between your 10/70 and 4/71. I am probably pressing my luck, but can you make out the numbers stamped into the spaces on these decals. I can't quite make them out. You've been a big help. Dan

Arne, Thanks for the follow-up info from 12746. These screw and washer fasteners, I believe we can all agree with the research provided in these postings, were on a good number of series 1 cars. The exact number, if not inclusive to all, is purely hypothetical at this point. I was fortunate enough to acquire two of these screws and clear washers in NOS condition on ebay, but those are reserved for the quarter window interior plastic trim. Finding more for the doors may be an imposibility. Arne, does your HLS30-12746 have the original master vac decal in place? If so, I would really like to see a picture of it. Dan HLS30-20419

I have a request. If someone has a 69 or 70 series 1 240z that has a master vac decal on it, I would really appreciate it if you could post a picture of that decal, or PM me a picture of it. There were two or three iterations of this decal on 240z cars, and I am trying to sort out the correct decal format for the correct years. I will, also, need the vin # and build date of your car. It would also be great if I could get a good picture of some 72 and 73 decals with vin# and build date as well. I am trying to be as correct as possible with these decals and this would help a lot.
