My winter project: L28 swap into my 240z
So with Petronix you just change out the guts and use the same distributor. Learned something new today! I put a '79 ZX remanufactured distributor in my #918 240. The #110 still has points. Maybe one day I'll change it over too. I'm thinking I may sale it though, I went nuts and have more Zs than garage doors.

My winter project: L28 swap into my 240z
I'm sorry but I know absolutely nothing about Petronix stuff. The OE 240 caps are the smallest, 280s are a little bigger and the ZX is the biggest. They're not interchangeable as far as I know. If you have a Petronix dizzy wouldn't it have it's own specific cap? I know mine are all "keyed" to the distributors with a thick space on one side of the cap so you can't install backwards. Hopefully someone familiar with your ignition can help? Your car looks fantastic by the way. I'm really anxious to hear how that motor runs.

I replaced my fuel sender with a new one from Nissan. After reading on here about the process I realized the arm had to be bent a little. I think the new ones are straighter so they'll fit into the box. Maybe your's needs to bent some? If it's the original one, it may just need a good cleaning where the contact arm sweeps over the wiring. Carburetor cleaner works good. I was able to clean the one on my 280, the 240 had to be replaced, it was frozen from sitting in a cruddy tank full of 10 year old gas.

It's hard to follow but the #1 plug wire looks like it is at the backside of the cap? It should be behind the radiator. You say you had to go one spot clockwise, which would put it at the top.

Aluminum clear coat
I never put it in an oven but I can say this, it worked great during the rebuilding. All the oil and assembly lube wiped right off. Through my mistakes I had to pull the head and the front cover off. They got dirty but after a wipe down they look like new again. That's the Eastwood bare metal clear coating. I don't think they'll ever get yellow, just a feeling of mine though. I sandblasted the aluminum and it soaked it up like a sponge, I quit applying it when it would just lay on top so it's penetrated down into the aluminum. Fingers crossed!

1978 280z Engine Rebuild project
Flashing lights coming out of the woods and smoke are a couple of my reasons. I am constantly looking in the mirrors, you never know when a Mustang or something wants to get a run up on you. If you see one coming, drop down a couple of gears and that's all you'll see of him, in the mirror.

If you decide to straight wire the pump for a pressure reading (I would) speaker wire and alligator clips make it easy. You may not have the OE Bosch pump? And there is a positive and a negative post on them. Here's some up close pictures thanks to Blue. http://atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/fuelpump/index.html This shows the inlet filter that could be clogged. Those things are very fragile and you'll need tweezers to pull it out for inspection.

Who's been MIA?
I remember him saying he was trying to get the bugs worked out so he could sale it? Seems like I was trying to get him to try a potentiometer. Was it yellow with a black stripe?

Need help with my 1978 280z 2+2
That's probably what all that tape was for, somebody pulled the cylinder head and marked the connections. Just guessing though.

That tape looks like it's to the injectors. Maybe they're new or he cleaned the connectors? or both. I would rather have a 76 than a 78. No smog crap to deal with. Probably has the n42 intake which is desirable. Be happy with your car! I would be. Cliff

No egr or bpt valve on that motor. Look on the driver's door strike side for a sticker showing the build date.

'78s had vents in the hood. The hood has been changed or its not a seventy eight. Could have been in an accident, pretty good one to for a different hood. Fyi

You can get a gauge in the pool supply section at Lowes. They sell them for the pool filters. http://www.lowes.com/pd_199191-1003-PG550___?Ntt=pool+gauge&UserSearch=pool+gauge&productId=3151541

The front cover behind the water pump could be cracked allowing coolant to mix with the oil, it's pretty thin behind there and if the pump's impeller is loose it could wear a hole in the cover's water passages. Hundreds of possibilities. Check the plugs for water droplets and see how much coolant is in the radiator. If the radiator is empty you have a big leak like the front cover is worn and coolant is mixing at the front and dropping down into the oil pan. If the plugs are wet, most likely a cracked head or head gasket. Just guesses, that's all you'll get without going further with the symptoms.

$80,000 to paint my Z!!!
I was quoted $5,000 to $7,000 just as DjWarner says. That's a quality paint job with them removing all the glass and reinstalling it. I would have to remove the side markers, bumpers and tail light assembly as well as the emblems. FYI No way in hell would I pay $80,000 just for paint. That's 8 more 240s to add to my "retirement fund".

DIY Alignment -- Did I do it right?
Rossiz that's exactly how I was raised! Pay attention to what you're doing and you'll be fine. Now my Dad is 76 and takes things apart himself but has a hard time getting them back together, call Cliff he'll figure it out! Makes me mad sometimes but he's taught me more than most Dads do so I owe him big time. Looking at parts on our cars, the shiniest side goes against something. That's my favorite!

Too me that looks like your rich running problem. Those plugs aren't able to burn the fuel. Imho
