  1. I'm having a MAJOR issue right now with both of my doors not closing right. The car is at the paint shop, and has been for a very very long time. Well after finally getting it painted, the reassembly is underway and mostly done. However the doors do not close correctly with the new door seals from Precision. The body shop says the doors, fenders, etc are all lined up as perfect as can be done, and that the door seal is at fault. My Z friends are telling me that everyone uses the Precision seals and almost all are able to make them work. So who's right? The body shop took the seals back out because they're afraid of bending or denting the door trying to close it so hard. The body shop says if they start shimming the doors and adjusting fenders, etc everything will then be off and not lined up like it is now. I need some serious advice here! BTW, these are the 280Z door seals that are supposedly not as thick as the 240Z seals, so I don't know what options are left. HELP!
  2. Then it matters that you'll back your seat up against it.
  3. Be careful what you install in your car. Installing an inertia reel can actually increase the kinetic energy seen by the mounts. If the mounts weren't designed for the load, a failure may occur. Upon impact the vehicle slows down, however you continue at the same velocity; thereby increasing your velocity with respect to the vehicle over time. By the time the inertia reel locks, your relative velocity will likely be higher than if you were wearing the stock 240Z restraint that was hardmounted with no reel. Furthermore if you install an inertia reel into a car incorrectly, it may not even lock upon impact. Check the condition of the restraint material as well. Remember that Kinetic energy = 1/2 * mass * (velocity squared), so a change in relative velocity can dramatically increase the energy at which you strike something in your vehicle or the force exerted upon you by your restraint.
  4. '71 doesn't have the inertia reel pocket behind the seat.
  5. I have a 72 4spd and no cutting necessary.

You mean Recaros at $800 each? You can add some lumbar by doubling some jute up in the lumbar area.
  7. I think you need a new neighborhood, not a new cap.
  8. Take a look at the chrome lettering on this NOS part, how do you think it compares?
  9. Hi, I almost forgot to introduce myself. I came here from the Internet Z Car Club mailing list, when the diversity among members became so great we decided that we needed our own forum just for early Z cars. So I've been here a little while, and apologize for not doing this sooner. I purchased my 71 240Z in Nov 1992, and am the third owner. This Z was originally purchased at what I believe is now Coulter Nissan in Glendale, AZ (different location). I think it was called Valley Nissan or something before (have to check paperwork). A USAF officer then purchased it used and brought it to VA in the late 1970's. It's been in paintship prison now for over two years, and finally got painted. It's in assembly mode now. The only body modifications I will make are the addition of a BRE front spoiler and 432 rear spoiler. I saw my first Z in 1971 at Pence-Briggs Datsun in Richmond, VA when my parents were buying a 510 4-dr sedan. Strangely the 510 was the same 920 Safari Gold as my Z is. I think maybe I caught the bug then.
  10. I don't think I said there was a boundary layer.
  11. Lots of people install R-200's whether they need it or not. If you drop a V-8 or engine with tons of power in your Z, you probably need one. If not, you're wasting money.
  12. The 240Z had the engine serial number on the engine compartment nameplate. I believe you are correct that a 5-speed was an option on the 280Z.
  13. So John, think you can continue with the stock manifold if you go with a mild cam upgrade?
  14. Twice pipes have been discussion ad nauseum since at least the 1990's. From what I remember about all those discussions, the general sentiment was that they didn't make your car perform any better than a good single pipe exhaust. This even goes back to the Internet Z Car Club mailing-list days. Remember, it's a 2.4-2.8 liter six, not a 7 liter V-8. In fact I might even argue that a twice pipe has less effective flow than a single pipe system. Your going to have turbulence along the boundary, and a twice pipe probably has more surface area. I know there were some people back then that actually ran flow tests on different configurations....we definitely had some exhaust fanatics in the group. There was even a discussion about inserting a stainless braided section after the downpipe to reduce vibration in the system (less noise). Those discussions use to be on the Z-31.com. You can search at this site if you like. http://www.z31.com/izccarchives/
  15. Don't like badging on your car?
  16. There are no labels, but I'm going to say that mine is like the SuperSprint system. The bottom pic in Arne's post shows the chrome better. It's like that. The two bullet mufflers are definitely like canisters, and are not smooth at each end like the Ansa or Targa systems. And of course the two pipes are cut off straight and are the same length.
  17. The Ansa muffler on your 260Z look exactly like the one on my Z, and was there in '92 when I bought it.
  18. http://www.finishing.com/faqs/chrome.html I found this interesting.
  19. Spoke to Arron (sp?) at MSA yesterday. They will exchange the part. He says the original Nissan parts were not of great quality either, due to the limitation of the process. Arne, the entire part is chromed and then painted, apparently just as Nissan had done. Bottomline is that he believes that the quality is as good as an original Nissan part. In that case, I suppose nothing more could be expected. In fact if the quality were better, then I suppose some would have issue with authenticity, but that's another discussion. I'm just looking for something at least as good as original. The part I received was a prototype that was not suppose to be shipped, as esprist stated. I'm guessing that Nissan chose this process for cost. Chrome was probably less costly at that time, and obviously to reproduce the part it would make sense to use the same process. If I knew more about chroming plastic I could say for sure.

I got a call from the paint shop just now, they got the car painted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's been two years.
  21. What's that's suppose to mean? What does my number of posts have to do with anything?
  22. Are you associated with MSA?
  23. I'm not going to do anything with this part. I just wonder how it got past the stringent QA process at MSA. I mean, I doubt I'm the only person that can see this.
