  1. What a great excuse for a really expensive Demolition Derby. BMW could get some of their money back by selling tickets to the event. Dennis
  2. Just wanted to chime in and let everybody know that the houston floods spared both the Datsuns and the Z and roadster will be seeing the beauty that is texas fall soon. Hope everybody is well, and driving as much as possible. I have been away for too long from this great community and will make an effort to be more present as I miss you guys. SD
  3. Now the Z is back home in N. California. I'll be driving it to local shows for the next year or two. I'll be at the Neillo Concours Serano at the El Dorado Hills country club in Sacramento on Sunday, Oct 6th. It seems to me that these concours events value originality and authenticity more than the japanese car events. But most concours events seem to be more focused on old European and American iron. I'm just going to see if I can get my Datsun up close to some antique Rolls. Bet I get bigger crowds! Finally home. Need to get a anti door ding barrier built, and some netting for the shelves to protect against the next quake...
  4. Sounds like my Dad's rules! Turn that hot water off! I know what you're doing. Deburring...
  5. Well I don't think a Twiggy would help....
  6. Proof that the government (any government) can always throw enough money into a project to make a problem disappear (note that I did not say go away). Keep a Mae West close at hand as you travel this area!
  7. You found the Money Pit!
  8. I guess I should have tested it before I cut the belt.
  9. MBZ, thanks for stopping by and the kind words. Motorman7 and Miguel have done magic with my Z and when I get in it, I feel like I'm 24 years old again. (my age when I bought that Z in '73. Hope that doesn't make me "museum quality") ?
  10. de-burring rules!
  11. I had to file/sand my crank snout after my stock damper's bolt came loose and messed up my crank. I then bought the BHJ and took the crank and new damper to my machine shop and told them to check the crank for straightness and cracks plus adjust the fit to the proper interference that BHJ recommends. The crank checked fine and the fit was right where BHJ spec'd it. When I installed it, I was a bit nervous about the key moving, but it stayed in place and the damper pulled right in using the bolt and only minimal torque. I'd guess it took less than 15 ft-lbs. of torque to draw it in.

According to the chart, he could have one of three 1980 distributors. Total advance could be between 42° and 52°. Chances are good though, it's 47°. 13. This is exactly why the 280 damper bores were machined back far enough so you could feel the groove receive the woodfuff key. If you are off just a tiny bit, it can push the key through the oil slinger. So many ways to screw up a good motor by one mistake......what a waste! BTW Capt.....you want a tight fit on your damper.....some race dampers require up to 250lbs. of torque to install.
  14. ok but I still think it would be a good idea to check for binding for your own peace of mind.
  15. It was already on the car and fully assembled when I noticed. I placed a block of wood against the firewall and was easily able to move the camshaft forward using the curved portion of a long pry bar. There was not a lot of room, so it was the only thing I could think of. Everything is on, timing lines up nicely, so we are moving on. Kid has homecoming in a few weeks! Remember those days! I took it out on the freeway for about 15 miles and got on it a little bit. The performance increase is pretty noticeable, but I also noticed a bit of detonation under a bit of a load(I only took it to 4k rpm) on a slight incline at around 60MPH@ roughly 3kRPM. It went away after a few seconds. I'd guess it would be worse if i lugged the engine. I'll have to get used to finessing the throttle to avoid it. Maybe a bit less of a shave would prevent it. Haven't run a compression check yet, but it sure wants to do evil stuff haha.
  18. Customer who bought my L24 brought me his car to install the engine. It had a horrible knock but ran. He left the other day a happy guy with his new power plant . I was able to tear his motor down to show him some of the issues before he left . He had bought the car and it basically blew up in him 2 days after he got it. The seller didn’t take any responsibility for any engine issues. He had just put it together and knew it was good. Pictures tell a thousand lies. I didn’t get a picture of number 5 rod journal that had spun its bearing
