I was following a Miata down the road the other day wondering if the driver would mind selling me his seats :classic: and noticed that the outside mirrors may work on a Z has anyone tried this swap?

I was checking out JC Whitney online and found that they have an air dam for 240s. Does anyone have any experience with these dams (that will admit it)? I like the idea of a fiber glass air dam with a rubber skirt. On another note I was as Shasta this weekend and someone told me that the urethane dams distort while driving . Any comments on this?

I just put in the Gabriel Gas Ryder struts front and rear, $25 each Lifetime warranty. I will let the group know how they work out.

I have never seen the type of rallying in the USA like there is in other parts of the world. I think most motor sports grow out of what is part of the local experience. Take NASCAR that has its roots in moonshine running that came out of probation in the 1930's, which was a big engine and out running the feds. Then we have drag racing unsure of it's origins but I believe it came from Southern California. When you look back at the history of American cars, power was first then came handling a very distance 2nd. I think this comes from our wide open spaces where you do not have to turn very often. Heck my dad had a 69 Chrysler station wagon pumping out ~350HP (at the flywheel) that the power steering gave you as much road feel as the radio volume control knob it floated down the road. I was lucky because my first car was a 68 Cortina II and it was fun to drive. I grew up in the Mojave Desert and had a lot of fun drifting sideway around corners on dirt roads thinking I was a Rally driver. In fact the closest that we have to balls out Rally that I have seen is our off road racing with vehicles found on this web Link Fun fact: Can anyone tell me the origins of the phrase “balls out” it is not what you think!

The clutch is slipping at ~2500 RPM right? Well then it sounds like the clutch was damaged when the slave cylinder failed. My guess is some of the clutch material has come off the clutch and that is causing the ticking and with material missing it would slip when you got into higher gears. I have had clutches slip when in 4 or 5 gear but not in 2nd or 3rd unless going up a hill or under hard acceleration. I another check is to drive down the road at a constant speed with the ticking noise, place in neutral then rev the engine, does the ticking sound change? If so the problem is not in the transmission but forward. If the ticking slows down as the car slows down (out of gear) then the problem is from the transmission back. Does all this make sense?

Strut on the right came off with not problems. Back on the road and ready to go to Shast and get some ideas from people / cars on what I want to end up with.

:D :D I got up this am and could not get the strut retainer nut to move so I was figuring it was time to get the impact wrench that I knew I was going to need. While mulling over the cost it dawned on me that the top of the strut where the nut is attached may not be hardened. After confirming with a punch and a hammer I setup to drill out with five bits increasing in size to ~3/8" and five min later the job was done.

The bright side is that cut up job just razed the value of our remaining Zs

I got the wrenches and have the strut outside the fender BUT someone put lock-tight :stupid: on the self locking nut on the top of the strut! This unfortunately is causing the strut rod to spin when I turn the nut even when braced with 2 of the 3 body mounting bolts. I have try vice grips on the rod but with it polished I cannot get a grip. In the morning I am going to try (with the spring compressors on) getting the strut retainer / seal nut to spin off. If this works I can get the spring off then get maybe get a better grip of on the rod. :rambo: Owen K

I am replacing the rear struts this weekend and my repair manual says to remove the transverse link spindle. I have removed the 2 nuts on each end but the lock bolt is stuck fast. My question is it possible to remove the strut with out removing the lock bolt? I have not given it a try yet because my sons have lost both of my 14 mm opened end wrenches that I need to remove the axel / U-joint so I have to run to town and purchase 2 new wrenches. (What I did to my dad is coming back to haunt me!) Owen K

I have a 79 620 Pick-up that I will be using as my test / learning painting vehicle before I tackle my 240Z. It has a stick-on decal on both sided of the truck I was wondering if anyone had easy way on how it could be removed. You can check out the truck at Link Thanks Owen K

The DMV must have just updated the web site because 2 months ago it was only 73 autos and did not say anything about 30 yr old autos. This is good news

In my opinion unless you do the work yourself Z cars are not worth restoring if you are looking at selling for a profit. If you doing it for you own enjoyment then, how deep is your wallet? I am in the Sacramento area (Granite Bay) and new to the restore seen but I suggest going to one of the ZONC meetings at Peoples Nissan in Folsom. I have not been so I will be checking them out also. Check out the links from this site to others, read the tech info. ask questions and after as short while you will find out who knows what they are talking about and who is full of it! In general I have found this site to have a good group of knowledgeable folks that respond. <p> Just remember why you are doing what you are doing and do not get distracted by flash.

Tom I lived in that cultural desert from 1966 to 1973 and I am a proud 73 grad of Mojave High School :sick: and I thought I had died and gone to heaven when I moved to Bakersfield and found out that I could get auto parts on weekends :stupid: The upside was that I had a great time with a 68 Ford Cortina hauling butt down dirt road and drifting through corners. I still impress friend with 4x4s when we go out to Saline Valley and I can take a 2WD Pickup just about anywhere they can take their 4X4. Maybe we can meet up when I get my Z fixed up and I bring it down to make my brother jealous:devious: But cheer-up you now have 2 flashing red lights in town! Owen K

My plan is to have fun bringing back the great lines of a Z with out going overboard on the restore. I have no frame rail rust. Just rust in front of the rear wheels that I plan to cut out with a plasma cutter then weld sections in from a rolled 240. The dash has a cap but I also have a out of the box new dash from Nissan. At this time I am unsure if I will use the dash or sell it for parts for the car. I plan to replace the seats with Miata seats so my 40+ yr old back and but is happy on long trips. Basicly I am looking at this car as plastic model that I used to make when I was a kid but now I will get to drive it!

I recently changed the transmission on a Datsun Pick-Up and used a 8' long 1' deep trench lined with plasitc, because every time it went up on the stands one side would sink in and the stands rolled over! See the setup a this Link

Sorry folks but the P-40 known by many names but made famous in the USA (the colonies) by the flying Tigers in South East Asia had an Allison engine. The early P-51 Mustangs had the Allison but we in the colonies :classic: could not get the supercharger to work correctly the Brits came to the rescue :rambo: , the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine was substituted and the rest is history. Yes you are correct the Rolls-Royce Merlin is a sweet sounding engine. Another item of note is that the Mustang was spec'ed by the Brits to replace the Spitfire. On my 71 the pull levers open and close the air vents above the nob.

Roughly: 15 Roadsters, 10 dimes, 5 ZX's, 2 280's, 2 Z31's, 30 4G's and the rest 240's . . . .Overall a very nice show--but with some surprising offerings... steve77 One of those dimes (the primer gray one) was my sons and I am dam proud of the work he is done on a restricted budget. I did not raise a rice boy!
