  1. Rob Fuller at Z Car Garage gets my vote, but I'm sure motor builders are plentiful for a street application.
  2. The "fix" for this is to go with the thick insulators and the longer studs.

    Jordan, What are your issues?
  4. To my way of thinking, for the average guy driving mainly summer time, I look at this as one of those ancient systems designed to leave you standing beside the road when the whole thing decides to pop a leak. An awful lot of the steel fittings on manifolds we disassemble are pretty severly corroded away from the inside to the point of being really thin. Remove the fittings and glue in some little freeze plugs to finish the holes. Every shakey system on these old pots that can be taken out of the equation, the better. Return everything else to square one and enjoy good long term driiving fun.
  5. Andy, Avail yourself of the services of the local as offered. No better way to get away from 47 guys telling you what they think and by being hands on, he will either have you out of the woods in relatively short order or have them so totally screwed up they wont run at all. Also, chasing worn out SUs is not the most rewarding persuit out there and you may never get them right. Don't be surprised if they wont hold tune for very long.
  6. As an added attraction, Steve Epperly will be doing a carb install and tune for Dave Irwin, more than likely Sunday AM. Would be an excellent time to see first hand how tuning "needs" to happen. We can bring extra UNI-SYNs if anyone needs one and wants to save shipping. Dave may also have his headlight upgrades in tow to show off.
  7. Previous owner was partially compensating for the distributor being off a tooth by the gap on the points.
  8. Same with a pushrod 1600 with 38mm Hitachis, so it makes the cut in my book.
  9. You guys thinking Nashville will be recovered by July. Boy did they catch it. Anything 10 feet over flood stage has got to be a mess...... Funny radiator story: Man needs a radiator but sells his Fairlady Z because no one shows a radiator for a Farilady Z........ think about it.....
  10. MSA is alright but basically another "park your arse in the grass" deal. Maybe dime owners are different but there seems to much more willingness to get involved in driving. There were 44 510s at the Mitty in GA last weekend "driven" from Canada, Kansas, Ohio, New Hampshire, Texas, Florida and all points in between. And they'll autocross once they get there and drive home. Out in the hills around Ventura there are some great roads to drive spiritedly and I'd think that should be an easy sell...... We at Datsuns Northwest have several spirited driving events each year. We also host the autocross in conjunction with CANBY. Northwest Z on the other hand does winery tours and the like...... Just pick your poison. Again, getting those interested people together will answer which camp y'all will be in......
  11. That's all you need to do. Get everyone together and gather ideas about what you all want it to be and what you want to do. May turn out to be that you'll have a contact list so that when someone gets a wild hair for a fun run, ya light up the internet, meet somewhere on a Saturday morning and head out. I think a lot of clubs suffer from their own weight. Too much structure and too few willing to put in the effort long term.
  12. Hey, ya don't pay scale, this is what you get.......
  13. Had a new customer bring his Fairlady Z to the shop this morningto have a new set of 38mm carbs installed. The car is stellar having been owned since 73. The gentleman's name is Weber which has me asking the obvious question, do Webers really prefer SUs? Anyway, hopefully you'll be able to see this car at Canby.
  14. You cannot have too many grounds. Good grounds keep the smoke from leaking out of electrical stuff......
  15. This is not rocket science people. If the tube has oil for the puck to run up and down in, fine. If it's dry, add some oil....... It's just world's crudest shock absorber so treat it as such by drooling some oil in there every luner eclipse or so and it should be fine. I add oil maybe twice a year and I drive the car daily. I have been pulling with a little cheapy plastic pipette out of a quart of ATf that is so old the can is cardboard.
  16. I knew there was a reason I didn't want to jump into the middle of this one.
  17. Filling the inner tube to within a half inch of the top will be about right. Any more than that the puck on the end of the dipstick will just push it over the top and into the engine to be burnt. We've had calls from some asking why their carbs go thru so much oil...... Come to find out they've been filling clear to the threads in the top of the dome which allows any oil above the tube to disappear into the engine. Don't do that!! Doesn't do any real harm but that quart of ATF wont last 25 years like mine has.......
  18. Tweeking and fiddling.... tweeking and fiddling. Much more rewarding once it's running, huh?
  19. Well, this is the place to get the word out. Have you checked the classifieds here? How far are you willing to travel? I can tell you already you'll need carburetors...... nyuck nyuck
  20. So just around the corner the second weekend in JUNE is DATSUN DRIVING CANBY FUN at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds in Canby just outside of Portland. Would love to see you show up. We at Ztherapy are planning on being there and if all works out, will have an early carb "Show and Install" for all to take in. For info on Canby go to www.datsunsnw.org In the mean time we sell a DVD on the early SUs (Hitachi variants) that you might want to consider replacing your flat tops with. A $25 teaching tool worth every penny from what we hear back from customers.
  21. Another point in favor of the stock box is the fact that the "snorkle" allows for pulling cooler air in from forward of the engine. Rhe individuals sit open right above the exhaust manifold and the heat it produces. And as stated the stock air horns are pretty darned effective.
  22. To build up that worn corner a wire welder works well. Just zap a spot to build it up and file to profile.
  23. Why do people say you need to go thru everything when you buy one of these 40 year old beasts? Because until you refresh each and every system on the car and you personlly know the condition of each, you have a bunch of questionable old systems, any one of which can leave you standing beside the road. There really are 3 choices. 1. Buy a car that has had all this done recently. 2. Be prepared to do it all. or 3. Keep your AAA card and cell phone handy. Case in point.... preheat water thru carb manifolds. Guys ask if they should keep it hooked up. If you have ever seen these hard fittings after they have been eaten out from the inside and thin to the point that'll you know there will be a water drain out the least opportune moment of your driving year. Why not remove all that stuff and send it sailing over the fence into the neighbor's back yard and be done with it? My point exactly.
  24. Had the 2.8 ever been carb'd, I can guarandamn t ya Nissan would never have stuck a 4 barrel on them...... Too funny.
  25. HMmmmm. There really isn't any way to mis-align the piston in the dome. It either slides up the tube or it doesn't. No place for either to move to some other "outta whack" location. Try a good finger wipe up inside the dome and see if you can feel any "scuzzies"..... We keep this up with the "scuzzy" thing and it'll become a new industry standard for techno-speak.
