  4. Followed one of the routes in the North Georgia mountains for the drives Georgia Z Club will be leading for ZCON next month. Needed to get familiar with it so I can lead one of the drives. These drives will sure to be another highlight of this years convention.
  5. Well after forty years of ownership I'm finally starting a second go around at restoring my 1970 240Z. I purchased the car well used in 1978 with 90,000 plus miles from the local Datsun Dealership in Chilliwack, BC Canada. Here is a picture from July '78: Here is what it looks like today. Looks reasonable but the paint is showing its age and there are some other issues lurking that need to be fixed properly. Full disclosure will come later. Restoration number one was done in 1982 and I only did what I could afford at the time. I actually think this first attempt of was really "Canadian maintenance", my poor Zed was at a do or die point. Here are a few pics from 1982: I went to the parts department at my local Datsun dealership and made, what I learned later was, the largest order of body parts that anyone had ever placed with them to that point. By the time my body man and painter were finished and with the cost of the car, I could have bought a brand new 1978 280Z instead, but hey I was 18 at the time and I have never regretted doing it. In future installments I will list my restoration goals add a time line of my 40 years of ownership, after I sort and scan more of my old pictures. Anyway I plan to document my adventure with my re-restoration here, and I'm sure I will be looking for advice, also comments and tips will be very welcomed. Cheers, Mike

  8. Love how you used aluminum foil to protect from overspray. I'll have to add that to my bag of tricks!
  9. My XXR 537 Wheels. 16" x 8" on all four corners. Tires are 225/55/R16 front and rear
  10. Over the past 2 month. Pulled the engine and trans, had the head rebuilt, rebuilt the motor, cleaned and repainted engine bay: rebuilt the front end and replaced all the rubber, new struts. Removed front fenders, resprayed undercoating and or paint where appropriate. Still need to finish engine bay details, rework stock valve cover and then we can drop motor and trans back in. INterior was completely striped and seats have been rebuilt. New wheels, tires exhaust etc etc etc......

My 4/71 build has the double edge cut key that works on all locks as well as the ignition. One key does it all. Dennis
  14. Quite apart from all the other issues with the car, that front license plate makes me very nervous. Hopefully it was put on to create some 'atmosphere', but it's all wrong for the car. The taxation class is wrong for a genuine ZG (it's for a car with capacity under 2000cc) and any car hailing from Sapporo needs extra scrutiny of its structural condition because more than half the year it is snowy and icy up there. There's one old car dealer in Sapporo who has a particularly bad reputation for make-do-and-mend type repairs that are covering up all sorts of nasty stuff.

  16. Ben, Nice write up on the ZG. I was there on Saturday saw the car in person as well. Besides the valid points you made on why the ZG sold for not as high as anticipated, I think the main reasons for it not selling higher was due to its condition and previous repairs done to the car. When looking through the opening of the g-nose it was apparent that the radiator support was silver. At first I thought maybe the car was originally silver and just made into a ZG clone. But after opening the hood it was obvious from the poor welds and messy application of seam sealer that the front support had been replaced. The sub-par repair also caused fitment issues between the front headlight buckets and the fenders. Both floors had been replaced with just plain sheetmetal instead of stamped repros or floorboords from a donor car. The driver-side door jamb looked to have been previously repaired, possibly due to rust. When I opened the hatch there were loose rust flakes found all over under the carpet. An electrical fuel pump that was fitted underneath by the factory mounting points was jerry-rigged to a thin sheetmetal strip one would find at Home Depot. The body had numerous dings and wavy body panels, and the paint, while it still had a shine, had many spots where it was blemished or cracked. The hood emblem was the S130 version. These issues along with others I didn't note I think caused any potential buyers present to be turned off from buying the car. I did try to ascertain if it was an authentic ZG or a clone. With the exception of the radiator support that was replaced by a silver one, everywhere I could inspect without ripping out interior panels led me to believe the car is an original GP Maroon car. I even looked under the liners in the tool bins and it looked to be the factory paint. What shocked me the most was how well this car looked in the RM Auction photos vs seeing it in person. I was expecting the car to sell higher due to online bidders registered in the auction. RM Auction worked their magic in those photos.
  17. ***Update*** Hooked up the new ignition components, car has great spark, and runs. I'm going to also swap out the gas for a higher octane and give an in depth analysis on how it runs with the new components. All in all, I have spark back, and I'm a happy camper :) a few more notes: I went with an 'Accel' ICM, on an ACDelco heatsink and a MSD blaster 2 ign coil. Also used 10g wire for everything.
