'71 temp sensor thread size

Does anyone know the thread size for the 240Z water temp sensor?  I want to update / replace the gauge but rather not change the fitting on the engine.

I don't know off the top of my head, but I'll check when I get a chance.

I can tell you that it's a straight thread, and not a taper thread. I suspect that will complicate your project a little.

The temp sensor is a straight thread, not a tapered pipe thread. The temp sensor is a two part deal like a brake fitting. Finding an adapter will be a trick.

I feel quite bad not knowing the thread spec off by heart....

It looks to be M16 x 1.75 

I can measure the 1.75 thread pitch, but I don't have a bolt that big to check it fits.  Looks like an M16 as a 16mm deep socket takes it off, and the threads are nearly the same size width as the ‘head’  

But as I said, just buy one, it’s like $10

The one I pulled from my '71 a few months ago measures M16 x 1.5, not 1.75.

This temp sensor is from an early 72, it is M16x1.5, straight threads no taper.

And although nobody asked (rarely stops me), here's some additional info about those sensors.

The original sensors are actually two pieces. A steel threaded portion and a brass sensor portion. The steel part uses a straight thread and the reason they can get away with a straight thread (not tapered) is because that's not what holds back the coolant liquid. The liquid sealing surface actually has nothing to do with the threads. The liquid is sealed by the small beveled edge further down the sensor. Taking liberties with Granny's photo:

Some of the newer aftermarket sensors are all one piece brass like the below. Note that the O-ring does not hold back the coolant. All it does is keeps dirt and junk out of the threads. The same beveled surface is what keeps the coolant in:

I just confirmed this week that the temp sensor is a M16 x1.5. I went to specialty bolt shop to buy two plugs for my housing since it from a ZX and has extra holes. The guy measured all the holes for me. That’s what he measured for the temp sensor.

I like those plugs. Are they flat bottoms? Like made to be used with a crush washer seal of some sort?

They look like oil pan plugs.

They are pretty nice plugs. I went to several places including Fastenal and nobody had anything other than a typical bolt. So they do look like a pan plug and have a flat flange base with a rubber o-ring. They were like $2.50 each. CO if you need some let me know and I’ll grab them for you. I need to reduce my beer tax I have going with you so far.
