Hi all! I'm new to this board and actually have spent several weeks here before signing up just reading/searching posts and trying to gain knowledge. A few years ago (July 2008 or so) I become the happy (well lately NOT happy) owner of a 280Z that was garaged and not-driven for many years. Well it's been an experience since then...lots to do! It was running fine until a week or so ago when I started it and it began backfiring horribly, and idling rough, and running rough (no power:disappoin) I realized the gas in the tank was a year old so I drained it and added 6 gallons of fresh 93 octane. The backfiring stopped but it is still running rough (though somewha…

I have a 78 280Z which is stock...or so I thought. I am restoring the engine compartment and putting in a new engine. While inspecting the rack and pinion assembly, I found that I had a torn bellows/boot so I pulled the assembly to inspect it and replace the bellows on both sides. When I ordered new bellows, the bellows that I recieved had a 1.75 id on the end with the large opening. I also checked the size of some other bellows for a 280Z from my local auto parts stores and they all have the 1.75 ID opening. My rack and pinion bellows ID is only 1.375"!!!!????? Other wise the assembly seems to be identical and fits the frame and wheel assembly according to the original …

So .. time to stroke the 2.8L.. Nope.. its a L20 engine.. now what? i think im just going to keep this engine and clean it up.. but finding parts for the L20 is not easy.. i need injecters.. and a head gasket..and possibly other gaskets and seals aswell depending on how indepth i go.. How and where can i find these parts? can i use 2.8 injecters? what upgrades can i do to this engine and head.. i know this head is a decent one for what i got.. i just need a good port and polish.. but still a 2.0 is disapointing.. i want a 3.1L stroker but odviously i need to go shoping for a good block and head now.. also .. if i run a 3.1L stroker .. keep the fuel injection or go to ca…

Hello All, I’m looking for some advice about either replacing my engine, or rebuilding my engine. What’s going on is, my 78’, 280Z has the original engine with 200,000 miles and really never had any major engine work done. Recently, the vehicle will not pass smog because I have low compression in #6 cylinder. My mechanic (friend) replaced the timing chain, and replaced the top end because he told me that the valves where causing the low compression for #6 cylinder. However, after he changed the head, he told me that the #6 cylinder still has low compression. So much for good troubleshooting ? I still have low compression, and now the vehicle will not stay running because…

Hi guys, I am new to this forum but not new to the forum world. Wanted to first start off by saying hi and I have already enjoyed browsing around and finding out a few interesting things. So now that my intro is done lets get straight to a problem I am having. I have a 83 280zx with a non turbo 6. I brought the car down from my home in Amarillo and parked it in the gaurage. Went to drive it a month later and it would not start. So i went through the basics and I am stuck on spark. What is the best way to tell if the car is getting spark. I tested a plug pulled out against the valve cover to see if I was getting spark and NONE. Is there another way for my to check spark t…

Ok I have been refreshing my car lately and have done numerous mods. Radio, antenna, carbs, air box, etc. All is well. however, I noticed the belt on my dealer installed Air conditioner has been cutting into my lower radiator hose. It never broke through, but the hose is 80% or more sliced into. So I ordered a new lower radiator hose from MSA... Here is where it gets interesting. Since I am running a non stock 3 core radiator I suppose to handle the dealer installed AC, I discovered the outlet on bottom of the radiator is a larger diameter than the stock radiator hose will fit over. I now have two radiator hoses for a 240Z that are essentially useless. So, I pulled…

Purchased a very stock 260z (auto trans, flat tops). Was not getting fuel to carbs so I replaced the mechanical pump, new fuel filter and fixed electric pump. Was getting gas to carbs but car would still not run. Checked compression and got good numbers across the board. Checked timing and discovered it was not showing up on my gun. Turns out the PO had the plug wires in the wrong positions. Corrected that. Car now turns over runs for about 10 seconds and dies out. Decided i'd dump the flat tops and replaced them with some early model round tops. Also removed all the extraneous smog stuff. With the new carbs i'm having a very similar problem. Crank the car over, …

Hi Guys, I recently had to take the battery out of my 1978 280Z to start another car and when I put it back I did not strap it in. The next day I found it leaning against the block and now it won’t start. The volt meter red light turns on, on the first turn of the key but when its turn completely to start the engine the needle goes to zero, the red light turns off and the engine/starter do nothing. Could it be possible something burnt out if the positive terminal touched the engine block? On a visual inspection I could not see anything, any ideas would be appreciated. Regards, Rick
