Big shout out to Z Car Depot and their rear strut tower brace. Purchased one and installed in minutes. I like that I can still use the factory covers and that it is so beefy. Highly recommended, very good quality welds. https://zcardepot.com/rear-strut-tower-brace-bar-240z-260z

Hi guys, I just completed most of the engine tune up work today ? Now it's time to move onto the suspension. The stock suspension is very bouncy on our 1977 280z. My fiance and I are mainly going to be using the Z for driving around on the weekends and also for hitting the canyons every now and then. I want to lower the car to 1-1.5 inches. I don't plan on putting fender flares and maybe just using 215 tires on 16 inch wheels. What do you guys think would be the best option for suspension? I was looking at Megan Coilovers for $800, CX Racing for $882 or just eibach springs and KYB struts. How do you guys like your setups?

I know this is a well discussed problem but I did come across a fairly easy solution with simple tools for removing a incredibly stuck gland nut without removing strut assembly completely from the car although you will need to remove the top of the shock tower from the wheel well for access. All you need is a 12" (or larger) channel lock with 3" jaws, two 14" (or longer) 1/2" steel cheater tubes, I used EMT conduit, plus a pipe wrench, mine is 18". The channel locks work well as the jaws have deep teeth that will bite into the gland nut edge giving you a good grip where most wrenches just end up rounding the nut corners. The 1/2" conduit fits snugly around the channel loc…

Hey, I took the big bumpers off of my 78 280z recently and replaced them with the 240z bumpers on the front and back, but now my ride height is super high, probably around 3 inches of wheel gap. Would it be possible to buy those MSA lowering springs for the 240z and put them on? The 280z ones advertise a drop of 1 inch but I am looking for more like 2 inches. However I dont want to buy coil overs for they are very expensive and I dont want to cut springs if I don’t have to. Since the 240 is so much lighter I think that the 280z which is still a bit heavier with the bumpers off, so it will weight those down a bit more. Any consequences of doing this? …

Hi guys, I need to replace a front wheel bearing and everywhere I look, I am seeing that wheel bearings labeled "A-2" & "A-6" fit the car. How do two different types of wheel bearings fit the front hubs? Any ideas? -chase

After completing my '78 280Z rear end refresh I've been gathering some upgraded components for a front end refresh for the last few months: Tokico Illuminas, new ball joints, Apex Engineered inner and outer tie rods, steering knuckles, and some PU bushings. I plan to media blast and powder coat the my OEM control arms, steering rack components AND front crossmember. My problem is how to safely and effectively suspend my engine to remove the crossmember while the front end is up on jackstands??? I've thought of holding the motor up with a couple of taller jackstands, fabricating a "bridge" to be placed between the top of the strut towers and hang the engine from it, etc. …

Hi there, Got to change my left inner tie rod...the one that's seems to be disrupted. Heard of getting a right one + right side rod and installing all this on the left side. Just wondering if anybody have validated an alternate part from ZX or other that may suit. Thanks for support. Seb

So tonight's' job involved installing new spindle pins into the rear strut assemblies. The question I have is...how tight/loose is an acceptable fit for the spindle pin in the strut housing hole? I tried reaming/cleaning out the inside of the hole passage by wrapping some sand paper around a dowel rod and passing it through the hole a few minutes. Then I greased up the pin real good. I can get the pin to pass through the hole, but only by tapping it with a hammer. It's so tight that the only way I can pull it out is by clamping down on the pin with vice grips and working it back and forth real good. I guess I'm really thinking I need to ream out the hole a little mor…

My 280z has an engine bay id tag that I have never seen in any other 1978. The tag has the vin# of the car stamped into it and nothing else. The dash vin #, firewall and door jam all match. Late 78's did not have the engine #'s on the engine bay tag but again, never have seen one that just has the vin stamped on it and nothing else. Anybody know why this car has this?

There have been a couple of references to BRE/Interpart’s Mulholland shocks lately, which apparently were produced by Boge. The company is part of ZF Friedrichshafen AG, based in Germany and parent to other products like ZF gearboxes and Sachs clutches. Here’s some info that could be useful for reference or if anyone is hoping to nurse a set. https://www.thejunkmanadv.com/boge-mulholland-shocks-info.html https://aftermarket.zf.com/go/en/boge/products/car-shock-absorbers/

At the risk of sounding redundant, I wanted to put together a coilover list. There are a few of these threads/topics around the internet already, but lots of them are from years towards 2006 (I didn't even have my driver's license yet) and have old, outdated links, or are not very comprehensive and easy to read. I am looking at coilover sets for my '78 280z so these links will be specific to that (mainly so I can reference it later). Assume that all are ride-height adjustable. I didn't look super hard for lowest price, so the options may be cheaper somewhere else. Order: Expensive --> Least Expensive Format: Name | Cost | Colors/Special Notes | Link Tec…

Hello everyone out there in Z land. Ok, I will try to be short and sweet. I am in the process of starting to work on my 10/70 #11915 Datsun Z that has been sitting in my garage for over 24 years. My how time flies when life gets in the way. But by the grace of God, I think its time. I am going to start first on the front end rebuild. The car will have some new old stock Mulholland springs that will lower the car an inch with Koni red struts. I have a set of urethane bushings on the way and also new lower ball joints and outer tie rod ends. Since the car will be lowered, what else am I going to need? Do I need a adjustable camber kit, bump stops, strut insulators and bump …
