  1. AutoWeek posted an entertaining video history of the Z. See it here: https://tinyurl.com/y7u5vjqp Dennis
  2. 1 point
finally got another day for the door and new toy. Did test fit of the door skin. Clamp the skin to the door frame tacked them together at the top. Then got out the door skin hammer and dolly to fold the skin crimp over. Finally what I have been waiting using my pneumatic skin crimping tool. WOW! Was that quick and slick! To finish the day off I shot the Interior side of the door in epoxy primer. Will do the skin next and then onto finishing the door and peel the driver door apart! Enjoy the Laborless Day weekend. 3. Hey man. Can I put the carb back on? I left it off and the spacer if you need any sort of measurement. Let us know how the phenolic spacers are coming. Cliff
  4. Scrap value. It was just few years ago that most of us felt the same way about the 260's and 280's. It's the "Things, Stuff and Junk Theory." We buy things, things, over time, become stuff and eventually become junk. But the process reverses direction, given enough time. Junk gains value until it's stuff, and eventually becomes a thing once again. I see the ZX replacing the 260 in the red-headed step child role. Not a bad thing at all, at least it's part of the family now. When all the 280's have been gobbled up, the ZX's will be next on the menu. Get em now, while they're still cheap.
  5. Jai, I believe he is referring to the other listing here on the forum that is very rusty, not this particular car....
  6. Ok, it's been a while since I gave an update, so here it goes! Every wire in the car, from front to back, has been redone, replaced or discarded. The car runs on what is needed. No heater, no fan controls, no radio, no antenna switch - not even the fuel light was spared. The car runs on only what's needed, nothing more and nothing less. The issue with the idle and pilot jets is resolved, too. Idles and runs on all six cylinders now! I'm not sure what did it, but I replaced my filter, cleaned my tank, cleaned out the carbs as best as I could and messed around with the idle mixture - and eventually it worked! I've spent many hours now diving into every piece of literature I can find on DCOE carburetors and I've surely learned a lot to the point where I feel very comfortable working on these guys. What I couldn't find much on was what parts of the DCOE family (Weber, Mikuni, OER, Solex, etc.) is interchangeable - specifically talking about jets. What I learned is that Weber idle jets work as long as you get the appropriate seats for them. Mikuni Air Correctors work on these carburetors, too, and fit right into the emulsion tube. The mains, however, only seem to fit with OER ones. I went through a lot of different setups to find something that works for this engine and so far the perfect recipe seems to be: Mains: 135 Air: 160 Idle: 65(OER)/65F9(Weber) I am currently running 62.5 pilots, but it's a tad bit too lean when cruising. i've tried 70F8's and 70F9's and they're both too rich. My guess is that 65's should fit in perfectly, but they're still on their way from Japan since I'm going with the OER one. The F9 designation on Webers is the same as the OER. I also got a wideband hooked up now so I can get proper readings on this thing. At idle I'm currently sitting at 12.7-13 AFR, it goes up to 14 when cruising under 2kRPM (should richen up a bit with the 65's) and I get in the mid 12's at WOT, which seems to be the sweetspot for this engine.
  7. Nice detective work. Feels good to get closure and be able to move ahead...
  8. Sounds like you might be talking about some of us older Z owners as well as the cars we drive. Dennis
  9. Included in some of the pictures I posted is a written estimate from a respected body shop. I'm about to go through all of the listings i have posted and lower the price again... I started off asking $8k for the car. My father and I have close to $20k invested in the restoration and maintenance. It was a labor of love now realized to all be in vain. First i crashed it and now a young family. I guess you make plans and God laughs.
  10. If it were not wrecked what would it be worth? If spending the $2700 on it yourself to get it fixed would put it at $8K or more I would get it fixed and then sell it. I honestly don't think the ZX have reached the level of commanding lots of money yet. Looking here, it shows good at $6600. https://www.hagerty.com/apps/valuationtools/1980-datsun-280zx-deluxe Yours in it's current state is Fair at $3700. Granted, there was no option for 10th anniversary. If someone offered $4K for it I would take it and call it a day. Just my opinion. I have a very rusty 10th anniversary. My reality is I will never get to it, nor is it worth fixing, honestly. Only has 90K on her and she runs amazing. I'm attached to her though, at least for the moment. The other listing here for the 10th anniversary and he is asking $1200! That put's yours worth $15K! Not to be harsh, but honestly that car is probably worth scrap value at best. Maybe 20 years from now he could get that.
