  1. I'll never know what happened to them, but I'm 99% sure they weren't there when the starter went on the car. It's all been degreased, tidied up, regreased, and put back together now (with screws this time!), so that's over and done with. And since I took the day off work, it seemed like as good a time as any to finally take the car out. First time it's gone farther than just around town. Has some rough spots, but it's kind of fun to drive!
  2. I like picture #2 .... looks like it's being prepped for major surgery. Looks like those magnetic parts dishes have come in handy. Good luck Cliff, we are all pulling for you.
  3. Hey @Jeff G 78. I don't understand cheat to the front? Do mean run it all the way to front then level it to the motor with the front and rear chains? I've got it in the front most hole. Here's some pics so far. I'm gonna wait until I know for sure I'm about to do it before pulling the tires and sitting the rears on ramps. I might move over a foot so the hoist's arm will go in between the ceiling joist. Thanks for everyone's help. It builds up my confidence. 8^)
  4. THANK YOU! Great ideas. I'll do the floor jack under the frontcross memberr and a rope with a wooden handle for the tranny. And use ramps facing outward on the rears. I have a plan! Happy happy, joy joy.
  5. I think I've seen this described somewhere and I wish I had thought of it when I was installing my engine and transmission combined - you can lift the tail of the assembly up from inside the car by wrapping a rope around it and pulling from the shifter hole. I would (have) wrap(ped) the inside part of the rope around a 2x4 or 2x2 and twist(ed) it up to hold it in place once lifted. I didn't though and struggled from underneath instead. Might be useful if you run out of adjustment on your leveler (I didn't have one) or just get stuck.
  6. Doesn't sound good, does it? Might be more costly than worth it, especially if you keep reading below! However, great job guys, I appreciate the views and thoughts! This part seems like a tough find, and now maybe I understand why? Although this switch does look a little different from the others I have seen. As Terrapin Z mentioned, it did come out of a 71, and mine is a 72. Although I understand this was a dealer option and not a... Dare I say the "F" word (based on the post "7 words to never say") ... Factory. Is it possible different a/c units/switches were available at different dealers? I say this, because, see the below paragraph...and I'd love additional weigh in from all. My Z was installed with A/C at the dealership when purchased. However, it didn't come with this additionally installed control unit. On my a/c unit box that is located under the glove box, there is an on off knob with arrow showing if you turn it past on and keep turning all the way you will increase the coolness. To access the a/c you move the knob on the heater control and select vent. Tadah... A/C on. So mine came without the extra mounted switch mounted on the driver side. You would think all the dealers would have access to the same a/c units and switch and isn't it curious that there is a variation? Another thought that occurs to me after everyone's great feedback is this.... I don't NEED this switch, mine works fine. I just thought I'd LIKE one? Am I chasing after more problems out of want rather than need? I'm thinking that is probably the case. For those of you following me on the SU carb issue... Another exercise in futility? Thoughts? I'll take photos of the a/c unit when I'm next at the shop just so you can see what my unit looks like. Im learning gang! Hang tuff with me K The lil z lady... Learning!
  7. not sure the total finished weight of your aluminum flywheels, but i have a 2+2 setup (larger diameter) that i had lightened considerably and while i can definitely notice the motor spins up much more quickly i've never had a problem w/stalling. it idles nicely at 700rpm and on flat ground i can start off without my foot on the accelerator at all. this is, of course an L28 so maybe a bit more torque than the L24 i suppose...
  8. Happy Dance!! Kira, Those are good carbs weather they be 3 or 4 screw, they should work fine. After some 40+ years of use and time the bushings for the throttle butterfly get worn and the loose their seal. That makes them not run as well, erratic idle. That is the biggest "fix" for ZT carbs as he replaces the bushing with bearings. Some say the flat tops are a better performer, but are very hard to find parts for. Having only made them 1 year and then switching to fuel injection. They are often disregarded as an option for those other than period restorations. IMHO They also had the most EPA components on the system, ie: the ERG valve on the balance tube. You however, should be good to go with those sans any air leaks. Do get the ZT DVD and learn about them. even if you have someone else tune them first, it is always good to know a little something about these old cars when your out for a drive and something goes amiss. At least you can attempt a fix on the road to get you home. Get her going and enjoy the ride.......... TZ
  9. The PO always laid the car on his back...to clean the undercarriage and bleed the brakes!
  10. Got the new springs, retainers and reground cam installed. Put in .180 lash pads and need to test wipe pattern yet.
  11. Believe me Jim S. is those two varmints best friend! He brings them treats and lavishes them with pets. As much as they wanted it--- no cake for Ms.Claire and Mr. Tavish. Thanks to Cliff, Charles, and Mark for the Birthday wishes and especially to S30driver-----such a great guy and best friend to me, as well as the varmints! Thanks again, Jim S., for coming to N. W. Arkansaw! Jim D. "Zup"
  12. Happy Birthday "One of the Jims." Looks like the guests want cake.
  13. What is your build date? If it came into existence June 1972 or after, it probably had flat top SUs. (according to info at Ztherapy) That may explain the previous mechanic's decision to change the carbs. Very few "orig" Zs that had flat tops still run them. BTW, it was a good decision depending on what you ended up with. I'm still curious. TZ's carb set-up above looks to be correct for pre-June 72s back to mid 71 and as complete as most people want them. You'll notice the balance tube between the carbs has a few plugs and unused bolt holes. Virtually everything that is missing is non critical and was emissions related. Those are, I believe, the ones the Cap'n are describing. Probably a bit more coolant plumbing than the early 4-screw carbs but good carbs none the less. If you're going back to SUs I (we) highly recommend getting the DVD "Just SUs" from Ztherapy. You'll never trust your carbs to a mechanic again and you'll have more knowledge about SUs than most "experts". Anyone want to correct or add any additional info?
  14. Just cake and ice cream I'm sure. No liquid refreshments. Happy belated birthday Zup!
  15. Got to attend Zup's birthday get together yesterday with family & friends. Some of the guests ...
  16. Neighbors... highly over rated
  17. I have a STi LSD 3.9 (use to have a regular 3.9) paired with a 81-83 5 speed. Works great for me. Get up and go is great and crusing RPM's are great as well. You would not be disappointed at all.
  18. Well car ran flawlessly at the 2016 NZ Festival of Motor racing at Hampton Downs (except for a slight incident with a not quite tight radiator cap) , sorry no videos but here are some pics. Our new brand Helfee- Serious supplements for the not so serious - was the class sponsor (shameless self promotion http://www.helfee.co.nz), but thought I better get a photo with the Pirelli girls too.
