First off, just wanted to say hey. I have been lurking for a while. Z's have always caught my attention so I came around here once every now and again. Anyway, there was a very good (at least I thought so) on a 73' 240z I couldn't pass up and just bought it. Here is a phone pic until I can find the cable to my camera. I know a lot about cars, but not much (yet) about working on cars. If you guys can bare with me, hopefully this will be a good first project. I intend for this car to be a daily driver. Also, if possible, the way I want to go about restoring the car is so that I can still use the car as I work on it. Obviously certain things can not be done that way. A…

I'm wondering how long the average L28 engine in a 280Z will last, miles wise? I know every engine will be different and of course taken into account all the infinite number of variables, but from experience? I currently have my L28 out of my Z and I'm cleaning it up and going to replace the necessities. However deep in my heart I really want to rip it apart and give it a complete rebuild. It has 177,000 miles on it, I've never seen it run since I bought the car after 8 years of sitting and went straight into giving the engine bay a refreshment. The PO said it ran fine when he stopped driving it. Anyhow I just want to know because if it will easily make it to 250K then ma…

My email addy is holly@wolfmagick.com thanx, Holly

Recently made a pretty significant purchase. Although things didn't work out perfectly, Al proposed some options and ultimately provided a very fair resolution. I am appreciative. Michael

Am working on the headlight buckets for 2 1971 240z I have, getting them ready for re-plating. I have the buckets completely disassembled except for the white-plastic block that headlight adjustment screw screws into. Question I have, is how are those installed and how do you remove them so they are not damage by re-plating process. Thanks in advance.

OK I tried to post this on Caswell's site and it would not let me. I know we have some people that use the CopyCad, so I thought I'd post hear, and try to post with Caswell at a later date. I have been plating with the CopyCad plating system for almost 2 years. Over the last 2.5 months I’ve been noticing a rust corrosion problem near the location I plate. Then 3 weeks a go on Saturday I got great plating of parts. That Sunday I was plating and the yellow-chromate would not adhere properly to the newly plated parts. They came out with a higher shine from the zinc tank than the day before and I didn’t add any brightener to the tank over that weekend. I cleaned th…

Is there a link which shows exactly what the 1971 Datsun 240Z has under the hood, inside under the dash and so on? I'm amazed at how tough it is to find any such diagrams or schematic on the technical/mechanical guts of this classic. Thanks lots.

Hi all, As fuel prices continue to rise, I'm wondering what the potential is of our L28 (or L24/26) engines is. I currently get about 19 mpg combined. I didn't worry about that sort of mileage as a kid, when gas was cheap, but these days that's what you would expect from a pickup truck, and 19 mpg will run you broke in a daily driver. I have to believe that an engine is an engine is an engine when it comes to basic operating efficiency. So long as they're able to pull approximately the same vacuum, they should be operating with roughly the same efficiency, right -- at least for cruising? Maybe the hp:weight ratio is lower on our engines than on a modern 24 valve engin…

I have seen an index of components that show each component in a z, what each item is, how many and what size screws etc. I have searched for component index, list of components etc. Does anyone have the link to it? Thanks
