  1. Cylinder #1 looks close enough to TDC in top picture above. Here are steps: 1. Install sealant at junction of block and timing cover 2. Ensure valve alignment matches head is at TDC. 3. Install head gasket and head. 4. Torque head bolts correctly. 5. Remove cam sprocket. 6. Fit chain on cam sprocket 7. Install cam sprocket (don't torque cam nose bolt yet) 8. verify timing marks on crack pulley and on cam sprocket. 9. If timing marks are off a little: Turn cam a little so that the crank pulley timing mark is aligned then note how many teeth the cam sprocket is off. 10. Remove cam sprocket and adjust to match the correct teeth. 11. repeat 6 to 10 until aligned. (You can use sprocket settings 1,2,or 3 to optimize cam advance). 12. Torque cam sprocket 13. Remove timing chain tensioner tool.
  2. @jakay11 Wow that is a time capsule! I'll be travelling to Denver many times in the near future. I'd be happy to visit and help you out!
  3. Waiting list I would guess. @Dr. 240Z tried to buy one in eastern Canada in early 1970 but was on a waiting list. He was still waiting by spring of 71 and saw 2 on a lot when arriving to work in western Canada. He bought the one that had not sold that same day... these cars were hard to get!!! It was built in Jan 1971.

  6. We love Mike! .... even our assets love him!
  7. Great post Kats! I like your discussion on the Porsche-like shifting issue. Risk of law suits and recalls would have certainly been considered for every aspect of the car's design and features.
  8. If this is on early Z's AND it is to deal with the crank vibration then Nissan would have known about it long before Brock got his racer.
  9. Can I sell my rights to 4 plants like they sell lobster licences... I'll never use it?
  10. Alan. I concur. I should have clarified more: I was responding to why the US market did not get a 5 speed in the standard offering (bad pun) for so long. 1. I was referring to why the 4sp stuck for so long in the US market at the start. My guess is what is stated above... it cost Nissan less (assumed) and it sold like hot cakes from the start so why change it? 2. I was referring to why the 5sp was second fiddle to the automatic transmission in the US market only. Clearly other markets would have had the 5sp as a focus.
  11. Interesting inputs... it looks like providing initial lowest cost may have been one of the prime reason for the 4speed, and instant profits from the "selling like hot cakes" so why change a thing kept the 4 speed in place. For early product enhancement, the transmission focus was more on providing an automatic so the 5speed would have been a "second fiddle".
  12. @kats Wow. Very interesting.
