Alan T. explains it best in this linked post. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showpost.php?p=31693&postcount=7
  2. Congrats Carl! Do you have any plans of releasing a poster sized print of the BRE Baja Z in that beach setting? If you do, put me down for one! I want mine signed by Pete Brock & Carl Beck. A single digit numbered copy would be nice.

My paint supplier has provided the same service here for at least 20 years and is a PPG dealer. I have never had any mixed and loaded into aerosol cans though because I have all the nessesary spray equipment needed, so it is just more convenient and cheaper to buy by the pint or quart for small jobs. I know my equipment and what results I will get. Also Les is a long way from here and it is difficult to get this type of material shipped across the border into Canada. I could not even get Zero Rust shipped across the border. I had to pick it up in Michigan and get it across myself. For the cost of 1 can of Les's paint after factoring in shipping, I can buy enough paint here to do my tail light finishers, watanabe wheels, my grill, both sets of D caps, front spook and rear spoiler. I have to say, I do trust your evaluation of the results you achieved Arne and it seems like it is the way to go for a lot of you, but not for me.

I would be interested in getting the PPG code. I am also questioning the longevity & durability of paint from a rattle can.

Welcome Clive...seems funny welcoming someone who has been around as long as you and also someone I have met in person and bought from, but you know what...never too late. Looks like a great winter project that you have bought. I don't know, I think some Zs look real good with a whale tail as part of the total package, like the baby blue one with the ghost flames and raised cowl hood at Cleveland. It just looked good. To each their own, I guess. Have fun with it!
  6. I have the book. There are other pics, I can scan also. If it does prove to be a FS5C71-A maybe the seller will have a lead on a 3.90 R180 that was possibly matched up with it.
  7. Although this chart does not have a specific column for Canadian models, the publication it comes from has provisional coding covering them when applicable. The Canadian models had the same wheel size - 5J-14.
  8. Yep, I think you guessed it. I've got a siren around here somewhere that looks just like it.

It looks to me like the second owner has forgotten about changing out the console. What other explanation could there be. It certainly didn't come from the factory with that one installed. I'd just replace it with the proper one. One question comes to mind. Before you purchased the fuse cover/ashtray what was in its place?
  10. Well Steve, your initial thoughts of the antenna being at fault are probably true. I know that there are signal amplifiers (pre-amps) available, that can be connected between the radio and antenna plug in, where it wouldn't be seen, but with a good stock antenna that shouldn't be nessesary. Carl - Your right about me having a crystal set, except mine was connected to a long wire going out the window and strung up a tree. You probably remember bringing bags of tubes to the corner store to test for any signs of life also. I still have an old shortwave that my grandfather bought new in the 20s that I keep in top working order. All the parts can still be found fairly easy today.
  11. Try the Nissan Dealer Parts Counter and test the theory that if this Ebay seller has the part then it's available at the dealer. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Datsun-240z-260z-Heater-Knobs-Screw-Set-NOS_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ46102QQihZ024QQitemZ370111899558QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
  12. I think the trimmer adjustment matches the radio to the antenna and your locations signal strength so it seems logical to me that all 3 radios would react the same and possibly need the same adjustment made. I think a different antenna would garner different results. Don't take this response seriously though, I'm just grasping straws. One other thing. Do you have a good ground to the radio chassis/case?
  13. There should be an antenna trimmer adjusting screw on the bottom of the radio. It may have come loose and is out of adjustment? FM waves travel differently from AM waves so the radio needs to be set for the area you live in. This comes under the category of "stuff I used to know about", but am guessing now.
  14. Ask the paint supplier who color matched the paint and sold it to you. They are the only ones who know the paint formulation and the expected shelf life.

The illustration in the Nissan parts manual is the same as Graeme posted. It doesn't show the cables or any "hangars". The associated parts number listings does not show any thing that could be described as a hangar or used to hold the cables in place either. Hopefully you only need to route the cables properly and fasten them. Take notes when you get it right in case I run into trouble putting mine back together. Seems to me I read a very old post covering this. Got you covered with the cable clamps & screws. PM me a mailing address and I'll try to get them to you before a Canada Post strike happens.

I have a '73 heater box out of the car if you need pics taken of anything. It's missing the cables also but the attaching clips are there. If you need parts from this box or the whole thing, it's yours.
  17. A good tangent that clarified the thread and pointed out that some aftermarket bars can be designed and shaped differently and fit/work well.
  18. That's the spirit! We all get discouraged from time to time, get overwhelmed with other priorities or get hit with whatever. Glad to hear you've had a change of heart. Good luck!
  19. I guess I could have been more specific also. Aftermarket bars are another story and were designed for use with your car Randy. I was pointing out the Nissan styled stock and performance catalog bars which are shaped like the ones shown in my pics and illustration.
  20. I don't have any first hand knowledge but I remember it being discussed before where cars were shipped with the brackets welded on, but no bar installed. Maybe someone will know more about that.

  22. Let me me draw a little finer line on the date the rear sway bar became standard equipment, just to make it clear for the guys with a '74. It was the '74.5 model that it became standard in the US & Canada and also changed shape. prior to this they were available from the parts counter at the dealer or from aftermarket suppliers. To avoid fitment problems for your '72, be sure to use one shaped like the one shown in this pic.
  23. Chris, I don't find the engine numbers on Gab's car or your 26th to be anything unusual. Let me explain my reasoning and you can take it for what it's worth. I know that you have assumed that 26th was delayed because of an engine change. The 11/69 build date could be attributed to something other than an engine change. With only the month & year on the door plate, it is a little difficult to narrow down a time frame, to determine the amount of time stagger between 26th & 27th. We are talking very early production with pre-production cars in the mix, in which case it could be likened to shuffling a deck of 52 cards. Back to the engines, which are assembled in a different plant or facility and then shipped on large racks which hold many engines. These racks in turn can be stacked a half dozen high, several deep and who knows how wide. There probably also were different variations/engines for other models/markets, but that isn't relevant for the purpose of this discussion. Early on in preparation for the launch all the parts needed were jammed into the plant which would be bulging at the seams until full production levels were reached. Don't forget this is long before the inception of "just in time stock systems". In all likelyhood much stock, engines included were buried in behind and under incoming stock and not used in the order that came into the plant. This is why there is so much discrepancy in what turned up in our cars.

Kats - Thanks for sharing your slides with us. They are interesting and well worth the cost of professional restoration. Someday I look forward to seeing more of the set. I noticed that several of the photographs that these slides were compiled from are the same used in the Service Manual P/N 99999-20016. Another thing I noticed and only because of a recent thread on the subject, was the later D hubcaps.
