1970 HLS30-06521 Re-Restoration
3 pointsGot enough of the interior out to get a good visual of the problem areas, here is what I found. Luckily so far I have only broken this one retainer on the RH kick panel, not sure how I could have saved it. Overall I'm not too shocked with what I have found and I won't be pulling much more until I have selected a restoration shop to work with. I want to keep the car drivable as long as possible.3 points

We're bringin' back the Flat Tops!
2 pointsThe plated parts arrived today, all 44 pounds worth. The parts look great, not sure if the pictures do them justice. I got the shocks out of the struts...finally. Actually the rears came out pretty easy. The fronts were not so easy. I soaked the left front strut for about a week in Kroil and PB blaster before finally tapping the strut off of the shock. Can you guess which two shocks were in the front from the picture below? ? The nuts that held the shocks in were also a challenge. I ended up heating the strut with my map gas torch and then putting ice on the nut, then loosening. That seemed to work pretty well. Also, note the 'Mulholland' shocks. Those are pretty retro. Not sure if they are around an more. Anyway, I will now clean up the struts, paint them, and then assemble with the nice new parts: KYB's, Energy suspension kit and newly plated fasteners. This is the fun part.2 points

Used harmonic balancer
2 pointsI think my only fame to hybridz was I wrote the how to guide for buying and selling. I try and stick to the principles as best I can. http://forums.hybridz.org/topic/82509-how-to-buy-and-sell-used-parts/2 points

Used harmonic balancer
2 pointsWow. An offer to refund without even any prompting whatsoever. Now that's customer service. I wish some of the people who had sold me unusable parts would have done that. Most of them just disappear after I have expressed displeasure. I hope good karma shines brightly on you both.2 points

1970 HLS30-06521 Re-Restoration
1 pointWell after forty years of ownership I'm finally starting a second go around at restoring my 1970 240Z. I purchased the car well used in 1978 with 90,000 plus miles from the local Datsun Dealership in Chilliwack, BC Canada. Here is a picture from July '78: Here is what it looks like today. Looks reasonable but the paint is showing its age and there are some other issues lurking that need to be fixed properly. Full disclosure will come later. Restoration number one was done in 1982 and I only did what I could afford at the time. I actually think this first attempt of was really "Canadian maintenance", my poor Zed was at a do or die point. Here are a few pics from 1982: I went to the parts department at my local Datsun dealership and made, what I learned later was, the largest order of body parts that anyone had ever placed with them to that point. By the time my body man and painter were finished and with the cost of the car, I could have bought a brand new 1978 280Z instead, but hey I was 18 at the time and I have never regretted doing it. In future installments I will list my restoration goals add a time line of my 40 years of ownership, after I sort and scan more of my old pictures. Anyway I plan to document my adventure with my re-restoration here, and I'm sure I will be looking for advice, also comments and tips will be very welcomed. Cheers, Mike1 point

Holy $^!# I bought a turd
1 pointFrom all I've read the SUs are temperature sensitive, they need some heat. My '72 has a winter and summer flap on the snorkel of the air box plus a heat riser connected to the bottom. My 2008 Stihl blower also has a winter and summer setting behind the air filter. There's got to be something to it, something about atomization I believe it's called. If you could source an OE air cleaner you could get all the hoses back where they belong. My $.02.1 point

1970 HLS30-06521 Re-Restoration
1 pointThanks @CHL240Z, I definitely have some rust repair to deal with. Over the winter I will post pics of the good, the bad and the ugly as I progress. My first order of business is to sell my last project, a 1988 Suzuki Samurai. This will give me more space in the garage and help a little with the budget. I might put it up on BAT. front suspension and tire clearance problem
A quick update, I found one on ebay and have since installed it with new inserts and all appears well. It also gave an excuse to replace the ball joints. Thanks for all the help.1 point

Best "performance" tire for a 70 240z
OK. That being the case, to get true performance rubber in a size suitable for a 240Z with 14x6 wheels, you're going to want to go to a different size. There are no good performance options in 195/70-14 anymore. The most common sizes that others with 14" use these days are 205/60-14, with a few using 215/60-14. Both of these sizes are both shorter and wider than the size you now have - the 205 being the smaller of the two. The selection of tires will be greatest in the 205/60-14, even the 215/60 is becoming a rare size any more.In the 205/60 you should be able to find tires by Kumho, Falken, Yokohama and more. Most any of those will do better than what you have now. If you do decide to shop for Z tires at Schwab, the ones they market under the Ohtsu Ziex label are the same as similar Falkens - Ohtsu is the parent company of Falken. Those are probably the only performance tires they will have available in a suitable size. I know that there are at least one or two others here who are interested in cloning that system. ToXic for one. Check out his thread:http://classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=322431 point
